And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailor to keep them safely:

After receiving these orders, the jailor threw them into the maximum security cell and had their feet securely fastened in wooden restraints.

and the jailor having come out of sleep, and having seen the doors of the prison open, having drawn a sword, was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to be fled,

The jailor called for torches [to be brought], then rushed in [to the cell block], shaking with fear, and fell down [on his knees] before Paul and Silas.

The jailor immediately took Paul and Silas, and cleansed [and soothed] their wounded [backs] and then he and his [believing] household were immersed [into Christ].

The next morning the city officials sent their officers [to the jailor] with the message, "Release those men."

and the jailor told these words unto Paul -- 'The magistrates have sent, that ye may be let go; now, therefore, having gone forth go on in peace;'
