'Engaged' in the Bible
because He was teaching His disciples [and preparing them for the future]. He told them, “The Son of Man is to be betrayed and handed over to men [who are His enemies], and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise [from the dead] three days later.”
to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
It happened one Sabbath, when He went for a meal at the house of one of the ruling Pharisees, that they were watching Him closely and carefully [hoping to entrap Him].
But listen, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table.
They found me in the temple presenting these offerings, after I had undergone [the rites of] purification, without any crowd or uproar. But there were some Jews from [the west coast province of] Asia [Minor],
“While so engaged, as I was traveling to Damascus with the authority and commission and full power of the chief priests,
So that we are no longer children [spiritually immature], tossed back and forth [like ships on a stormy sea] and carried about by every wind of [shifting] doctrine, by the cunning and trickery of [unscrupulous] men, by the deceitful scheming of people ready to do anything [for personal profit].
[and so you are] experiencing the same [kind of] conflict which you saw me endure, and which you hear to be mine now.
For I want you to know how great a struggle I have for you and for those [believers] at Laodicea, and for all who [like yourselves] have never seen me face to face.
We give thanks to God always for all of you, continually mentioning you in our prayers;
Older women similarly are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor addicted to much wine, teaching what is right and good,
