'Except' in the Bible

Now Saul heartily approved of putting Stephen to death. That day a severe persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and everyone except for the apostles was scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria.

Now the people who were scattered by the persecution that started because of Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except Jews.

except that in town after town the Holy Spirit assures me that imprisonment and suffering are waiting for me.

When he could not be persuaded otherwise, we remained silent except to say, "May the Lord's will be done."

Paul replied, "Whether quickly or not, I wish to God that not only you but everyone listening to me today would become what I am except for these chains!"
