'Pain' in the Bible

To the woman He said,“I will greatly multiplyYour pain in childbirth,In pain you will bring forth children;Yet your desire will be for your husband,And he will rule over you.”

Now it came about on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came upon the city unawares, and killed every male.

Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother named him Jabez saying, “Because I bore him with pain.”

Now Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!” And God granted him what he requested.

whatever prayer or supplication is made by any man or by all Your people Israel, each knowing his own affliction and his own pain, and spreading his hands toward this house,

Now it came about in the course of time, at the end of two years, that his bowels came out because of his sickness and he died in great pain. And his people made no fire for him like the fire for his fathers.

Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

“For He inflicts pain, and gives relief;He wounds, and His hands also heal.

“But it is still my consolation,And I rejoice in unsparing pain,That I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

“The wicked man writhes in pain all his days,And numbered are the years stored up for the ruthless.

“I could strengthen you with my mouth,And the solace of my lips could lessen your pain.

“If I speak, my pain is not lessened,And if I hold back, what has left me?

“Man is also chastened with pain on his bed,And with unceasing complaint in his bones;

For they have persecuted him whom You Yourself have smitten,And they tell of the pain of those whom You have wounded.

But I am afflicted and in pain;May Your salvation, O God, set me securely on high.

Even in laughter the heart may be in pain,And the end of joy may be grief.

Because in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain.

And it will be in the day when the Lord gives you rest from your pain and turmoil and harsh service in which you have been enslaved,

In the day that you plant it you carefully fence it in,And in the morning you bring your seed to blossom;But the harvest will be a heapIn a day of sickliness and incurable pain.

“Look to Abraham your fatherAnd to Sarah who gave birth to you in pain;When he was but one I called him,Then I blessed him and multiplied him.”

“You who dwell in Lebanon,Nested in the cedars,How you will groan when pangs come upon you,Pain like a woman in childbirth!

‘Why do you cry out over your injury?Your pain is incurable.Because your iniquity is greatAnd your sins are numerous,I have done these things to you.

‘You said, “Ah, woe is me! For the Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am weary with my groaning and have found no rest.”’

Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been broken;Wail over her!Bring balm for her pain;Perhaps she may be healed.

“Is it nothing to all you who pass this way?Look and see if there is any pain like my painWhich was severely dealt out to me,Which the Lord inflicted on the day of His fierce anger.

“The Lord is righteous;For I have rebelled against His command;Hear now, all peoples,And behold my pain;My virgins and my young menHave gone into captivity.

My eyes bring pain to my soulBecause of all the daughters of my city.

Ashkelon will see it and be afraid.Gaza too will writhe in great pain;Also Ekron, for her expectation has been confounded.Moreover, the king will perish from Gaza,And Ashkelon will not be inhabited.
