'Rivers' in the Bible
In that day the Lord will whistle for the fly that is in the remotest part of the rivers of Egypt and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
Alas, oh land of whirring wingsWhich lies beyond the rivers of Cush,
Which sends envoys by the sea,Even in papyrus vessels on the surface of the waters.Go, swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth,To a people feared far and wide,A powerful and oppressive nationWhose land the rivers divide.
At that time a gift of homage will be brought to the Lord of hostsFrom a people tall and smooth,Even from a people feared far and wide,A powerful and oppressive nation,Whose land the rivers divide—To the place of the name of the Lord of hosts, even Mount Zion.
But there the majestic One, the Lord, will be for usA place of rivers and wide canalsOn which no boat with oars will go,And on which no mighty ship will pass—
‘I dug wells and drank waters,And with the sole of my feet I dried upAll the rivers of Egypt.’
“I will open rivers on the bare heightsAnd springs in the midst of the valleys;I will make the wilderness a pool of waterAnd the dry land fountains of water.
“I will lay waste the mountains and hillsAnd wither all their vegetation;I will make the rivers into coastlandsAnd dry up the ponds.
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched,Nor will the flame burn you.
“Behold, I will do something new,Now it will spring forth; Will you not be aware of it?I will even make a roadway in the wilderness,Rivers in the desert.
“The beasts of the field will glorify Me,The jackals and the ostriches,Because I have given waters in the wildernessAnd rivers in the desert,To give drink to My chosen people.
“It is I who says to the depth of the sea, ‘Be dried up!’And I will make your rivers dry.
“Take the millstones and grind meal.Remove your veil, strip off the skirt,Uncover the leg, cross the rivers.
“Why was there no man when I came? When I called, why was there none to answer? Is My hand so short that it cannot ransom?Or have I no power to deliver?Behold, I dry up the sea with My rebuke,I make the rivers a wilderness;Their fish stink for lack of waterAnd die of thirst.
