'Wilderness' in the Bible

The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;The Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

“I would wander far away,I would lodge in the [peace of the] wilderness. Selah.

O God, when You went out before Your people,When You marched through the wilderness, Selah.

The nomads of the desert will bow before him,And his enemies will lick the dust.

You crushed the heads of Leviathan (Egypt);You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness.

He split rocks in the wildernessAnd gave them abundant [water to] drink like the ocean depths.

Yet they still continued to sin against HimBy rebelling against the Most High in the desert.

Then they spoke against God;They said, “Can God prepare [food for] a table in the wilderness?

How often they rebelled against Him in the wildernessAnd grieved Him in the desert!

But God led His own people forward like sheepAnd guided them in the wilderness like [a good shepherd with] a flock.

For we have been consumed by Your angerAnd by Your wrath we have been terrified.

For all our days pass away in Your wrath;We have finished our years like a whispered sigh.

Do not harden your hearts and become spiritually dull as at Meribah [the place of strife],And as at Massah [the place of testing] in the wilderness,

I am like a [mournful] vulture of the wilderness;I am like a [desolate] owl of the wasteland.

But lusted intensely in the wildernessAnd tempted God [with their insistent desires] in the desert.

Therefore He lifted up His hand [swearing] to them,That He would cause them to fall in the wilderness,

They wandered in the wilderness in a [solitary] desert region;And did not find a way to an inhabited city.

He turns rivers into a wilderness,And springs of water into a thirsty ground;

He turns a wilderness into a pool of waterAnd a dry land into springs of water;

To Him who led His people through the wilderness,For His lovingkindness endures forever;
