5 Joseph was already in Egypt. The total number of Jacob's descendants was seventy.

5 All the (b)persons who came from the loins of Jacob were (B)seventy (c)in number, but Joseph was already in Egypt.

5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

5 The total number of Jacob’s descendants(a) was 70;(b)(B) Joseph was already in Egypt.

5 All those who descended from Jacob totaled 75 persons. Now Joseph was already in Egypt.

6 Joseph, all his brothers, and that entire generation died.

6 (C)Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.

6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

6 Then Joseph and all his brothers and all that generation died.(C)

6 Then Joseph, all his brothers, and that entire generation died.

7 The children of Israel had many children. They became so numerous and strong that the land was filled with them.

7 But the sons of Israel (D)were fruitful and (d)increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly (e)mighty, so that the land was filled with them.

7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

7 But the Israelites were fruitful, increased rapidly, multiplied, and became extremely numerous(D) so that the land was filled with them.

7 But the Israelis were fruitful and increased abundantly. They multiplied in numbers and became very, very strong. As a result, the land was filled with them.

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel

8 A new king, who knew nothing about Joseph, began to rule in Egypt.

8 Now a new (E)king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

8 A new king, who had not known Joseph, came to power in Egypt.

8 Eventually a new king who was unacquainted with Joseph came to power in Egypt.

9 He said to his people: There are too many Israelites! They are stronger than we are.

9 (F)He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are (f)more and mightier than we.

9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

9 He said to his people, “Look, the Israelite people are more numerous and powerful than we are.(E)

9 He told his people, "Look, the Israeli people are more numerous and more powerful than we are.

10 We must outsmart them or they will increase in number. If war breaks out they will leave the country and join our enemies to fight against us.

10 Come, let us (G)deal wisely with them, or else they will multiply and (g)in the event of war, they will also join themselves to those who hate us, and fight against us and (h)depart from the land.”

10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

10 Let us deal shrewdly with them; otherwise they will multiply further, and if war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”(F)

10 Come on, let's be careful how we treat them, so that when they grow numerous, if a war breaks out they won't join our enemies, fight against us, and leave our land."

11 So the Egyptians put slave masters over them in order to oppress them through forced labor. They built Pithom and Rameses as supply (storage) cities for Pharaoh.

11 So they appointed (H)taskmasters over them to afflict them with (i)(I)hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh (J)storage cities, Pithom and (K)Raamses.

11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

11 So the Egyptians assigned taskmasters over the Israelites to oppress them with forced labor.(G) They built Pithom and Rameses as supply cities(H) for Pharaoh.

11 So the Egyptians placed supervisors over them, oppressing them with heavy burdens. The Israelis built the supply cities of Pithom and Rameses for Pharaoh.

12 However the more the Israelites were oppressed, the more they increased in number and spread out. The Egyptians could not stand them any longer.

12 But the more they afflicted them, (L)the more they multiplied and the more they (j)spread out, so that they were in dread of the sons of Israel.

12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

12 But the more they oppressed them, the more they multiplied and spread so that the Egyptians came to dread(c) the Israelites.

12 But the more the Egyptians afflicted the Israelis, the more they multiplied and flourished, so that the Egyptians became terrified of the Israelis.

13 They forced the Israelites to work hard as slaves.

13 The Egyptians compelled the sons of Israel (M)to labor rigorously;

13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:

13 They worked the Israelites ruthlessly(I)

13 The Egyptians ruthlessly forced the Israelis to serve them,

14 They made their lives bitter with backbreaking work in mortar and bricks and every kind of work in the fields. All the jobs the Egyptians gave them were brutally hard work.

14 and they made (N)their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they rigorously (k)imposed on them.

14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

14 and made their lives bitter with difficult labor in brick and mortar and in all kinds of fieldwork. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them.(J)

14 making their lives bitter through hard labor with mortar, bricks, and all kinds of outdoor labor. They ruthlessly imposed all this work on them.

Pharaoh Tells The Midwives To Kill All Hebrew Baby Boys

15 The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives. Shiphrah and Puah were among them.

15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom (l)was named Shiphrah and the other (m)was named Puah;

15 And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:

15 Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,

15 Later, the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah.

16 He said: When you help the Hebrew women give birth on the birth stool, if it is a son you shall put him to death. If it is a daughter, then she shall live.

16 and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, (O)if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

16 And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

16 “When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them as they deliver.(d) If the child is a son, kill him, but if it’s a daughter, she may live.”

16 "When you help the Hebrew women give birth," he said, "watch them as they deliver. If it's a son, kill him; but if it's a daughter, let her live."

17 The midwives respected God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them. They let the boys live.

17 But the midwives (n)(P)feared God, and (Q)did not do as the king of Egypt had (o)commanded them, but let the boys live.

17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

17 The Hebrew midwives, however, feared God(K) and did not do as the king of Egypt had told them;(L) they let the boys live.

17 But the midwives feared God and didn't do what the king of Egypt told them. Instead, they let the boys live.

18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said: Why have you let the boys live?

18 So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?”

18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

18 So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this and let the boys live?”

18 When the king of Egypt called for the midwives, he asked them, "Why have you done this and allowed the boys to live?"

19 The midwives replied to Pharaoh: Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women. They are vigorous and give birth before the midwife can get to them.

19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife (p)can get to them.”

19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

19 The midwives said to Pharaoh, “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before a midwife can get to them.”(M)

19 "Hebrew women aren't like Egyptian women," the midwives replied to Pharaoh. "They're so healthy that they give birth before the midwives arrive to help them."

20 God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty.

20 So (R)God was good to the midwives, and (S)the people multiplied, and became very (q)mighty.

20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

20 So God was good to the midwives,(N) and the people multiplied and became very numerous.

20 God was pleased with the midwives, and the people multiplied and became very strong.

21 Because the midwives respected God, He established households for them.

21 Because the midwives (r)(T)feared God, He (s)(U)established (t)households for them.

21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

21 Since the midwives feared God, He gave them families.(O)

21 Because the midwives feared God, he provided families for them.

22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: Every son who is born must be thrown into the Nile River. However, keep every daughter alive.

22 Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “(V)Every son who is born (u)you are to cast into (W)the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.”

22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.

22 Pharaoh then commanded all his people: “You must throw every son born to the Hebrews(e) into the Nile, but let every daughter live.”(P)

22 Meanwhile, Pharaoh continued commanding all of his people, "You're to throw every Hebrew son who is born into the Nile River, but you're to allow every Hebrew daughter to live."
