“‘A son honors his father, and a servant his master. Then if I am a Father, where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is the [reverent] fear and respect due Me?’ says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise My name. But you say, ‘How and in what way have we despised Your name?’
You are presenting defiled food upon My altar. But you say, ‘How have we defiled You?’ By thinking that the table of the Lord is contemptible and may be despised.
But now plead for God's favor that he might be gracious to us. "With this kind of offering in your hands, how can he be pleased with you?" asks the Lord who rules over all.
You also say, 'How tiresome it is.' You turn up your nose at it," says the Lord who rules over all, "and instead bring what is stolen, lame, or sick. You bring these things for an offering! Should I accept this from you?" asks the Lord.
You have wearied the Lord
Yet you ask, “How have we wearied Him?”
When you say, “Everyone who does what is evil is good in the Lord’s sight, and He is pleased with them,”
“Yet from the days of your fathers you have turned away from My statutes and ordinances and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord of hosts. “But you say, ‘How shall we return?’
Will a human [dare to] rob God? Yet you [are] robbing me! And you say, 'How have we robbed you?' In the tithes and the contributions!
"Your words have been harsh against me," says Yahweh. "But you say, 'How have we spoken together against you?'
You have said, 'It is useless to serve God. How have we been helped by keeping his requirements and going about like mourners before the Lord who rules over all?
Then you will again see how the upright man is different from the sinner, and the servant of God from him who is not.
Then Herod secretly sent for the magi and learned from them
But Jesus answered him, "Come now, this is how we should fulfil all our duty to God." Then John gave in to him.
"How blessed are those who are destitute in spirit, because the kingdom from heaven belongs to them!
"How blessed are those who mourn, because it is they who will be comforted!
"How blessed are those who are humble, because it is they who will inherit the earth!
"How blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness, because it is they who will be satisfied!
"How blessed are those who are merciful, because it is they who will receive mercy!
"How blessed are those who are pure in heart, because it is they who will see God!
"How blessed are those who make peace, because it is they who will be called God's children!
"How blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, because the kingdom from heaven belongs to them!
"How blessed are you whenever people insult you, persecute you, and say all sorts of evil things against you falsely because of me!
"Ye have heard how it was said unto them of the old time, 'Thou shalt not kill; for whosoever killeth shall be in danger of judgment:'
"Ye have heard how it was said to them of old time, 'Thou shalt not commit adultery:'
"Again, ye have heard how it was said to them of old time, 'Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform thine oath to God':
"Ye have heard how it is said, 'An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.'
"Ye have heard how it is said, 'Thou shalt love thine neighbor, and hate thine enemy.'
Therefore, this is how you should pray: "Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy.
"Moreover, when ye fast, be not sad as the hypocrites are: for they disfigure their faces, that they might be seen of men how they fast. Verily I say unto you, they have their reward.
that it appear not unto men how that thou fastest, but unto thy father which is in secret: and thy father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!
Look unto the fowls of heaven, how they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are you not more excellent than they?
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, How shall we be clothed?
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
Hypocrite, first take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly how to remove the splinter from your brother's eye.
If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
how strait is the gate, and compressed the way that is leading to the life, and few are those finding it!
He said to them, "Why are you afraid? How little you trust God!" Then he got up and checked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
And the Pharisees observing it, said to his disciples, How is this, that your Master eateth with publicans and sinners?
but when he saw how the multitude were fatigued and dispers'd like so many sheep without their Pastors, he was moved with compassion, and said to his disciples,
Here is how it will be: I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; therefore you should be as crafty [Note: The Greek word here is "sensible"] as snakes, yet as harmless [Note: The Greek word is "sincere"] as doves.
But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more them of his houshold? Therefore fear them not; for there is nothing covered, that shall not be discovered; nor hid, that shall not be known.
[how] blind people are receiving back their sight, and crippled people are walking [again], and people with infectious skin diseases are being healed, and deaf-mutes are hearing [and speaking (?) again], and people are being raised [from the dead], and poor people are having the good news preached to them.
"How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible it will be for you, Bethsaida! Because if the miracles that happened in you had taken place in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
And he said unto them, have ye never read what, David, did, when he hungered, and they who were with him? how
How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.
Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.
And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
"How blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear!
That is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out, cull out the evil people from among the righteous ones,
He went to His hometown
He told his servants, "This must be John, the Immerser; he has risen from the dead and [that explains how] these powers can work through him [i.e., Jesus]."
Jesus at once stretched his hand out and caught him, saying, "How little you trust me! Why did you doubt?"
"How is it that your disciples break the traditions of our ancestors? For they do not wash their hands when they eat food."
His reply was: "How is it that you on your side break God's commandments out of respect for your own traditions?
You hypocrites! How well did Isaiah prophesy of you when he said,
Then came his disciples, and said unto him, "Perceivest thou not, how that the Pharisees are offended in hearing this saying?"
Do you not see how all that enters the mouth passes into the belly and is then thrown out into the drain,
Then Jesus answered her, "O, woman, how great your faith is. May what you want be done for you." And her daughter was healed that very moment.
And the disciples say to him, How may we get enough bread in a waste place, to give food to such a number of people?
And Jesus saith unto them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
And in the morning, It will be foul weather to-day: for the heaven is red and lowering. Ye know how to discern the face of the heaven; but ye cannot discern the signs of the times.
You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, yet you can't interpret the signs of the times? An evil and adulterous generation craves a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah." Then he left them and went away.
But Jesus, aware of this, said,
Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?
Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
Then Jesus told him, "How blessed you are, Simon son of Jonah, since flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, though my Father in heaven has.
From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
And Peter spoke, and said to Jesus, "Master, how good it is that we are here! If you wish, I will make three huts here, one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
"How is it," his disciples asked, "that our Teachers of the Law say that Elijah has to come first?"
But I say to you, that Elijah already came, and they knew him not, but did to him how many things they wanted. Likewise also the Son of man is going to suffer by them.
Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me.
He saith - Yea. And, coming into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, How, to thee, doth it seem, Simon? The kings of the earth, of whom receive they dues or tax? from their sons, or from the aliens?
How terrible it will be for the world due to its temptations to sin! Temptations to sin are bound to happen, but how terrible it will be for that person who causes someone to sin!
How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?
Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?
This is how my heavenly Father will treat each one of you unless you forgive your brother from your hearts."
He answered, and said unto them, "Have ye not read, how that he which made man at the beginning, made them man and woman?
Jesus said to them, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives [only] because of the rebellious spirits you [Jews] had. But this was not how it was [intended to be] from the beginning [i.e., when God created one woman for one man].
but Jesus called them to him and said: "You know how the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.
Both the crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed him kept shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! How blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"
And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!
But how does it seem to you? A man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go and do work today in the vine-garden.
"Have you never read in the Scriptures," Jesus answered, "how The stone that the builders rejected Has been made the corner-stone; This is the Lord's doing, It is wonderful in our eyes?
And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
