"Let me know, O Yahweh, my end, and what is the measure of my days. Let me know how transient I [am]."

In those days Hezekiah became {deathly ill}, and Isaiah the son of Amoz the prophet came to him and said to him, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Command your house, for you [are about] to die; you will not recover.'"

Whoever is joined to all the living has hope. After all, even a live dog is better than a dead lion!




If only they were wise, they would understand this; they would discern {for themselves their end}.

Look [away] from me that I may be cheerful, before I depart and I am no more.


Whatever your hand finds to do--do [it] with [all] your might; for in Sheol--where you are going--no one works, plans, knows, or thinks about anything.

The light is sweet, and it [is] pleasant for the eyes to see the sun. For if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in all of them! Let him remember that the days of the darkness will be many-- all that is coming [is] vanity!

For Sheol cannot praise you; death [cannot] praise you. Those who go down [to the] pit cannot hope for your faithfulness. [The] living, [the] living one praises you like me today; a father will make your faithfulness known to children.

"{You must be prepared for action} and [your] lamps burning. And you, [be] like people who are waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that [when he] comes back and knocks, they can open [the door] for him immediately. Blessed [are] those slaves whom the master will find on the alert [when he] returns! Truly I say to you that he will dress himself for service and have them recline at the table and will come by [and] serve them.

But I say this, brothers: the time is shortened, that from now on even those who have wives should be as [if they] do not have [wives],




[in order] to incline your ear toward wisdom, [then] you shall apply your heart to understanding.

Now, give to me wisdom and knowledge that I may go out and come in before this people, for who can judge this, your great people?"
