and the second has an affinity with it, "thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self." these two precepts comprehend the substance of all the law and the prophets.
One of the Scribes, that had heard their dispute, observing the propriety of his answers, propos'd this question to him, which is the principal commandment of all? Jesus answer'd him, the first of all the commandments is thus deliver'd, "hear, o Israel, the lord our God is the only lord. you shall therefore love the lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, to the utmost of your understanding, and all your faculties." this is the first commandment.read more.

You are in the right, said he, to abolish the laws of God, to make way for such traditions.
for laying aside what is of divine appointment, you stick to their human traditions, about the washing of pots, and cups, and many other the like practices.
but Paul and Barnabas told them boldly, you indeed were the first, to whom the word of God was to be preach'd: but since you reject it, and judge your own selves unworthy of eternal life, be assur'd, we shall make the same offer to the Gentiles: for thus has the Lord commanded us, "I have appointed you to be a light to the Gentiles, that you should bring salvation to the remotest parts of the earth."
God has been pleas'd to over-look this state of ignorance: but now he enjoins all men every where to repent:
who knowing the divine rule of right, did not perceive that they who commit such things are worthy of death, and not only they who do the same, but they who give countenance to those that do them.
Paul an apostle of Jesus Christ by the appointment of God our saviour, and of Jesus Christ our hope,
and has in due time manifested by the preaching of his word, which is committed to me according to the commandment of God our saviour:
now this is his commandment, that we believe in his son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, as he commanded us.
besides, 'tis a commandment we have receiv'd from him, that he who would love God, must love his brother also.
a new commandment I give unto you, "that ye love one another; that you would have the same love for one another as I have had for you."
and he answer'd, why are you afraid, o incredulous people? then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. but the crew were all amaz'd; what is this man, said they, that even the winds and the sea obey him?
and rebuked the wind, hush, said he, and be still. immediately the wind subsides, and a settled calm ensued. why, said he, are ye so frighted? are ye still so void of faith? and they were exceedingly afraid, and said to one another, who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey him?
then they came to wake him, crying, master, master, we are sinking. then he rose up, and rebuked the wind, and the waves: and both subside to a calm. but to his disciples he said, where is your faith? while they, seiz'd with fear and admiration, said to one another, who can this man be, that he commands even the winds, and the waves, and they obey?
go and instruct all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost: teaching them to observe every thing which I have enjoin'd you: and be assured I shall be always with you to the end of the world.
and Jesus threatned him, be mute, said he, and come out. and when the unclean spirit had thrown him into convulsions, with a loud cry, he came out of him. at which they were all so amazed, that they ask'd one another, what's the meaning of all this? what new doctrine is here? for he commands with authority even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.
but Jesus rebuk'd him, saying, be dumb, and come out of him. upon which the demon threw him down in the midst of the assembly, and came out, without doing him any harm. and they were all amazed, and said to one another, what's the meaning of this? with authority and power he commands the impure spirits, and they come out!
but he strictly charged them not to mention it to any one, and order'd something should be given her to eat.
and her parents were seized with astonishment: but he charg'd them not to let the fact be known to any one.
Jesus observing the people came crowding to him, rebuked the evil spirit, saying, thou dumb and deaf spirit come out of the child, never to enter more, it is I command it.
even so has the Lord ordained, that they who preach the gospel, should live by the gospel.
and he commanded us to publish, and to testify to the people, that he was the person whom God had constituted to be the judge of the living, and of the dead.
as to the married, I enjoin this rule, not as from my self, but from the Lord, that a woman should not leave her husband: but if she has separated herself, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.
if any one pretends to be a prophet, or to spiritual gifts, let him be assured that the rules which I have here prescrib'd, are the commandments of the Lord.
for you know the precepts we gave you in the name of the Lord Jesus.
by admonishing you to be mindful of the predictions of the holy prophets, and of the directions of the apostles of our Lord and Saviour.
My brethren, I don't prescribe you any new commandment, but the antient precept which you had from the beginning: and that is no other than the word which was originally delivered. however, it is really, in effect, a new commandment I write unto you, with respect to you: because the darkness is past, and things now appear in their true light.
so he directed they should be baptized in the name of the Lord. after which they desired him to stay some time with them.
as they pass'd through the cities, they recommended it to the faithful to observe the decisions, made by the apostles and presbyters at Jerusalem.

and we have this hope in the Lord, that you will still continue to observe the directions we give you.
At my departure from Macedonia, I advised you to stay at Ephesus in order to charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, or trouble their heads with fables and endless genealogies, which rather promote disputes than the gospel-dispensation: such a charge will produce that charity, which arises from purity, from a good conscience, and a sincere belief:
Charge those that are rich in this world, not to be elated, not to depend upon their perishable wealth, but upon the God of life, who furnishes us with every thing in plenty for our enjoyment; to be beneficent, to be rich in good works, to be liberal to the common fund,
I enjoin you, before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who made a glorious confession before Pontius Pilate; to observe these precepts, to lead an unspotted life without reproof until the appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ,
in the hubbub some cry'd one thing, some another: so that not being able to get any information for the tumult, he order'd him to be carried to the castle.
but the tumult growing worse, the tribune apprehensive that Paul might be torn to pieces among them, order'd detachment to secure him by force of arms, and bring him to the castle.
Having staid above eight, nay ten days, he went to Cesarea, and on the morrow mounting the tribunal, he order'd Paul to be brought before him.
now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had publish'd an order, that if any man knew where he was, he should give information in order to have him seized.
having therefore order'd them to withdraw from the council, they conferred among themselves,
saying, did not we strictly command you, not to teach in this name? and yet you have spread your doctrine through Jerusalem, and you endeavour to make us responsible for this man's blood.
at which the high priest Ananias order'd those that were near him to strike him on the face: which made Paul say, "may God strike thee, thou plaister'd wall: you sit to judge me according to law, and in defiance of the law you order me to be struck!"
for when every precept of the law had been represented by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, wool of a scarlet dye, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book of the law and all the people, saying, "this is the blood of the testament which God has made in your behalf."
and Jesus said to him, take care not to tell any man, but go thy way, shew thy self to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, that it may be a testimony against them.
said he, how you take the least notice of this to any man: but go, show your self to the priest, and offer for your cure what Moses commanded, that this may serve as a testimony against them.
why then, said they, did Moses permit to give a writ of divorce to repudiate the wife? he answer'd them, 'twas because of your perverse temper that Moses suffered you to repudiate your wives: but from the beginning this was not in practice.
to which he answered, what direction did Moses give you? Moses, said they, allowed a bill of divorce, and so to dismiss her.
now Moses has ordain'd in the law, that such criminals should be stoned: but what is your opinion?
but sin receiving strength by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. for before the law sin appear'd dead. then it was I once liv'd secure; but when the prohibition came, sin exerted it self, and I was in a dying condition: and the commandment which leads to life was instrumental to my ruin.read more.
for sin getting power by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. wherefore the law is holy; and the commandment holy, and just, and good. was it then good that brought death upon me? no, but it was sin, that sin might show it self by being able to bring death upon me by means of that which is good; that sin, I say, by the commandment might appear to be exceedingly destructive.
You do not approach to any thing corporeal, to scorching fire, to smoak, darkness, and tempest, nor to the sound of trumpets, and the voice which pronounc'd such words, that they who heard, intreated they might hear it no more. nor could they endure that threat, "if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned."read more.
and so terrible was the appearance, that Moses cry'd out, "I tremble with the fright."
