For what glory is it, if, when sinning and being beaten, ye endure it? but, if, when doing well and suffering for it, ye endure it, this is acceptable with God.
And that servant who knew his lord's will, and made not ready, nor did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes; but he who knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few. And to whomsoever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whomsoever they committed much, of him they will ask the more.

But they all, having laid hold upon Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, were beating him before the judgment-seat. And Gallio was caring for none of these things.
And I said, 'Lord, they themselves understand that I was imprisoning and beating, throughout the synagogues, those believing on Thee;
from the Jews five times I received forty stripes save one; thrice I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; thrice I suffered shipwreck; a night and a day I have spent in the deep;
