So Moses went back to his father-in-law Jethro and said to him, "Let me go, so that I may return to my relatives in Egypt and see if they are still alive." Jethro said to Moses, "Go in peace."
They told him, "Joseph is still alive and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt!" Jacob was stunned, for he did not believe them.
Then Israel said, "Enough! My son Joseph is still alive! I will go and see him before I die."
Israel said to Joseph, "Now let me die since I have seen your face and know that you are still alive."
So they put sackcloth around their waists and ropes on their heads and went to the king of Israel. They said, "Your servant Ben Hadad says, 'Please let me live!'" Ahab replied, "Is he still alive? He is my brother."
They replied, "The man questioned us thoroughly about ourselves and our family, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?' So we answered him in this way. How could we possibly know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down'?"
He asked them how they were doing. Then he said, "Is your aging father well, the one you spoke about? Is he still alive?"
Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?" His brothers could not answer him because they were dumbfounded before him.
"Your servant our father is well," they replied. "He is still alive." They bowed down in humility.
But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among the men who went to investigate the land, lived.
Elijah took the boy, brought him down from the upper room to the house, and handed him to his mother. Elijah then said, "See, your son is alive!"
While he was on his way down, his slaves met him and told him that his son was going to live.
But Paul went down, threw himself on the young man, put his arms around him, and said, "Do not be distressed, for he is still alive!"
As for the rest of the beasts, their ruling authority had already been removed, though they were permitted to go on living for a time and a season.
