while it is said, "Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? And to whom did he swear that they would never enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,

But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?"

For we also have had the good news preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith.

He came to his own, and his own did not receive him.

And coming to his own country he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works? Is this not the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"read more.
And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house." And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.

He went away from there and came to his own country, and his disciples followed him. And when the Sabbath had come, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many who heard him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to him, that such mighty works are performed by his hands! He said to them, "Surely you will quote this proverb to me: 'Physician, heal yourself! Do here also in your own country what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.'" Then he said, "Truly, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. But I tell you truly, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; but Elijah was sent to none of them except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; and not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with wrath. And they rose up and cast him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw him down the cliff. But passing through the midst of them, he went his way.

For even his brothers did not believe in him.

Then they brought to him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and he healed him, so that the mute man both spoke and saw. And all the people were amazed and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" But when the Pharisees heard this they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons."

And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He is possessed by Beelzebub, and by the prince of demons he casts out the demons."

Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute man spoke; and the multitudes marveled. But some of them said, "He casts out demons by Beelzebub, the prince of demons." Others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven.

"If you are the Christ, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe.

And the Father who sent me has himself testified of me. You have never heard his voice, nor seen his form. And you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe him whom he has sent.

But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.

So the Jews gathered round him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me; but you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep.

To you therefore who believe, this is precious, but for those who do not believe, "The very stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,"

Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and testify to what we have seen; but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"

But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe."

Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from you." But he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign; but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, "This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

A wicked and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of Jonah." So he left them and departed.

And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to this generation."

Others, testing him, sought from him a sign from heaven.

For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the harlots believed him; and even when you saw it, you did not afterward repent and believe him.

But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, and stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.

But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren.

But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul in Berea also, they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds.

But when some were stubborn and disbelieved, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them, and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.

Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.

To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are corrupted and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their minds and consciences are corrupted.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and wickedness of men who by their wickedness suppress the truth,

so that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in wickedness.

and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not all have faith.

Even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent aggressor, I was shown mercy because I acted ignorantly in unbelief;

The Jews did not believe that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight.

The Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" The Jews answered him, "For a good work we do not stone you, but for blasphemy, and because you, being a man, make yourself God."

Though he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him;

If I do not do the works of my father, do not believe me; but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father."

How then can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without a preacher? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach good news!"

Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; but prophecy is for believers, not for unbelievers. Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad? But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all;

You wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without a word by the behavior of their wives,
