'Man' in the Bible
The strong man will become tinder,His work also a spark.Thus they shall both burn togetherAnd there will be none to quench them.
So the common man has been humbledAnd the man of importance has been abased,But do not forgive them.
The proud look of man will be abasedAnd the loftiness of man will be humbled,And the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.
The pride of man will be humbledAnd the loftiness of men will be abased;And the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,
Stop regarding man, whose breath of life is in his nostrils;For why should he be esteemed?
The mighty man and the warrior,The judge and the prophet,The diviner and the elder,
The captain of fifty and the honorable man,The counselor and the expert artisan,And the skillful enchanter.
When a man lays hold of his brother in his father’s house, saying,“You have a cloak, you shall be our ruler,And these ruins will be under your charge,”
For seven women will take hold of one man in that day, saying, “We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothes, only let us be called by your name; take away our reproach!”
So the common man will be humbled and the man of importance abased,The eyes of the proud also will be abased.
Then I said,“Woe is me, for I am ruined!Because I am a man of unclean lips,And I live among a people of unclean lips;For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”
The head is the elder and honorable man,And the prophet who teaches falsehood is the tail.
By the fury of the Lord of hosts the land is burned up,And the people are like fuel for the fire;No man spares his brother.
For he has said,“By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this,For I have understanding;And I removed the boundaries of the peoplesAnd plundered their treasures,And like a mighty man I brought down their inhabitants,
And He will destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body,And it will be as when a sick man wastes away.
I will make mortal man scarcer than pure goldAnd mankind than the gold of Ophir.
“Those who see you will gaze at you,They will ponder over you, saying,‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble,Who shook kingdoms,
But now the Lord speaks, saying, “Within three years, as a hired man would count them, the glory of Moab will be degraded along with all his great population, and his remnant will be very small and impotent.”
In that day man will have regard for his MakerAnd his eyes will look to the Holy One of Israel.
The Lord has mixed within her a spirit of distortion;They have led Egypt astray in all that it does,As a drunken man staggers in his vomit.
For thus the Lord said to me, “In a year, as a hired man would count it, all the splendor of Kedar will terminate;
‘Behold, the Lord is about to hurl you headlong, O man.And He is about to grasp you firmly
It will be as when a hungry man dreams—And behold, he is eating;But when he awakens, his hunger is not satisfied,Or as when a thirsty man dreams—And behold, he is drinking,But when he awakens, behold, he is faintAnd his thirst is not quenched.Thus the multitude of all the nations will beWho wage war against Mount Zion.
One thousand will flee at the threat of one man;You will flee at the threat of five,Until you are left as a flag on a mountain topAnd as a signal on a hill.
For in that day every man will cast away his silver idols and his gold idols, which your sinful hands have made for you as a sin.
And the Assyrian will fall by a sword not of man,And a sword not of man will devour him.So he will not escape the sword,And his young men will become forced laborers.
But the noble man devises noble plans;And by noble plans he stands.
The highways are desolate, the traveler has ceased,He has broken the covenant, he has despised the cities,He has no regard for man.
Behold, you rely on the staff of this crushed reed, even on Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him.
I said, “I will not see the Lord,The Lord in the land of the living;I will look on man no more among the inhabitants of the world.
The Lord will go forth like a warrior,He will arouse His zeal like a man of war.He will utter a shout, yes, He will raise a war cry.He will prevail against His enemies.
Who brings forth the chariot and the horse,The army and the mighty man(They will lie down together and not rise again;They have been quenched and extinguished like a wick):
The man shapes iron into a cutting tool and does his work over the coals, fashioning it with hammers and working it with his strong arm. He also gets hungry and his strength fails; he drinks no water and becomes weary.
Another shapes wood, he extends a measuring line; he outlines it with red chalk. He works it with planes and outlines it with a compass, and makes it like the form of a man, like the beauty of man, so that it may sit in a house.
Then it becomes something for a man to burn, so he takes one of them and warms himself; he also makes a fire to bake bread. He also makes a god and worships it; he makes it a graven image and falls down before it.
“It is I who made the earth, and created man upon it.I stretched out the heavens with My handsAnd I ordained all their host.
Calling a bird of prey from the east,The man of My purpose from a far country.Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.I have planned it, surely I will do it.
“Your nakedness will be uncovered,Your shame also will be exposed;I will take vengeance and will not spare a man.”
“Can the prey be taken from the mighty man,Or the captives of a tyrant be rescued?”
Surely, thus says the Lord,“Even the captives of the mighty man will be taken away,And the prey of the tyrant will be rescued;For I will contend with the one who contends with you,And I will save your sons.
“Why was there no man when I came?When I called, why was there none to answer?Is My hand so short that it cannot ransom?Or have I no power to deliver?Behold, I dry up the sea with My rebuke,I make the rivers a wilderness;Their fish stink for lack of waterAnd die of thirst.
“Listen to Me, you who know righteousness,A people in whose heart is My law;Do not fear the reproach of man,Nor be dismayed at their revilings.
“I, even I, am He who comforts you.Who are you that you are afraid of man who diesAnd of the son of man who is made like grass,
Just as many were astonished at you, My people,So His appearance was marred more than any manAnd His form more than the sons of men.
He was despised and forsaken of men,A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;And like one from whom men hide their faceHe was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
His grave was assigned with wicked men,Yet He was with a rich man in His death,Because He had done no violence,Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
Let the wicked forsake his wayAnd the unrighteous man his thoughts;And let him return to the Lord,And He will have compassion on him,And to our God,For He will abundantly pardon.
“How blessed is the man who does this,And the son of man who takes hold of it;Who keeps from profaning the sabbath,And keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
The righteous man perishes, and no man takes it to heart;And devout men are taken away, while no one understands.For the righteous man is taken away from evil,
“Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble himself?Is it for bowing one’s head like a reedAnd for spreading out sackcloth and ashes as a bed?Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable day to the Lord?
And He saw that there was no man,And was astonished that there was no one to intercede;Then His own arm brought salvation to Him,And His righteousness upheld Him.
For as a young man marries a virgin,So your sons will marry you;And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,So your God will rejoice over you.
“I have trodden the wine trough alone,And from the peoples there was no man with Me.I also trod them in My angerAnd trampled them in My wrath;And their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,And I stained all My raiment.
“No longer will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days,Or an old man who does not live out his days;For the youth will die at the age of one hundredAnd the one who does not reach the age of one hundredWill be thought accursed.
“But he who kills an ox is like one who slays a man;He who sacrifices a lamb is like the one who breaks a dog’s neck;He who offers a grain offering is like one who offers swine’s blood;He who burns incense is like the one who blesses an idol.As they have chosen their own ways,And their soul delights in their abominations,
