'Man' in the Bible
So humanity is brought low,and man is humbled.Do not forgive them!
Put no more trust in man,who has only the breath in his nostrils.What is he really worth?
The people will oppress one another,man against man, neighbor against neighbor;the youth will act arrogantly toward the elder,and the worthless toward the honorable.
A man will even seize his brotherin his father’s house, saying:“You have a cloak—you be our leader!This heap of rubble will be under your control.”
On that day seven womenwill seize one man, saying,“We will eat our own breadand provide our own clothing.Just let us be called by your name.Take away our disgrace.”
Humanity is brought low, man is humbled,and haughty eyes are humbled.
Then I said:Woe is me for I am ruinedbecause I am a man of unclean lipsand live among a people of unclean lips,and because my eyes have seen the King,the Lord of Hosts.
A man will go there with bow and arrowsbecause the whole land will be thorns and briers.
I will make man scarcer than gold,and mankind more rare than the gold of Ophir.
Those who see you will stare at you;they will look closely at you:“Is this the man who caused the earth to tremble,who shook the kingdoms,
Look, you strong man! The Lord is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you,
The Lord said:Because these people approach Me with their mouthsto honor Me with lip-service—yet their hearts are far from Me,and their worship consists of man-made ruleslearned by rote—
Then Assyria will fall,but not by human sword;a sword will devour him,but not one made by man.He will flee from the sword;his young men will be put to forced labor.
It serves as fuel for man.He takes some of it and warms himself;also he kindles a fire and bakes bread;he even makes it into a god and worships it;he makes an idol from it and bows down to it.
I made the earth,and created man on it.It was My hands that stretched out the heavens,and I commanded all their host.
I call a bird of prey from the east,a man for My purpose from a far country.Yes, I have spoken; so I will also bring it about.I have planned it; I will also do it.
For this is what the Lord says:“Even the captives of a mighty man will be taken,and the prey of a tyrant will be delivered;I will contend with the one who contends with you,and I will save your children.
I—I am the One who comforts you.Who are you that you should fear man who dies,or a son of man who is given up like grass?
Just as many were appalled at You—His appearance was so disfiguredthat He did not look like a man,and His form did not resemble a human being—
He was despised and rejected by men,a man of suffering who knew what sickness was.He was like someone people turned away from;He was despised, and we didn’t value Him.
They made His grave with the wickedand with a rich man at His death,although He had done no violenceand had not spoken deceitfully.
Happy is the man who does this,anyone who maintains this,who keeps the Sabbath without desecrating it,and keeps his hand from doing any evil.
For I will not accuse you forever,and I will not always be angry;for then the spirit would grow weak before Me,even the breath of man, which I have made.
He saw that there was no man—He was amazed that there was no one interceding;so His own arm brought salvation,and His own righteousness supported Him.
For as a young man marries a young woman,so your sons will marry you;and as a groom rejoices over his bride,so your God will rejoice over you.
In her, a nursing infant will no longer liveonly a few days,or an old man not live out his days.Indeed, the youth will die at a hundred years,and the one who misses a hundred years will be cursed.
One slaughters an ox, one kills a man;one sacrifices a lamb, one breaks a dog’s neck;one offers a grain offering, one offers pig’s blood;one offers incense, one praises an idol—all these have chosen their waysand delight in their detestable practices.
