'Water' in the Bible
Now the earth was without shape and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the watery deep, but the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the water.
Then God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters, separating water from water."
So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above the expanse. And it was so.
Then God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so.
God called the dry land "earth," and He called the gathering of the water "seas." And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, "Let the water swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."
So God created the large sea-creatures and every living creature that moves and swarms in the water, according to their kinds. [He also created] every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth."
But water would come out of the ground and water the entire surface of the land.
And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood with rooms in it, and make it safe from the water inside and out.
"For my part, I'm about to flood the earth with water and destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die.
Noah was 600 years old when the deluge came [and] water covered the earth.
Then Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons' wives with him entered the ark because of the water of the flood.
It came about after the seven days, that the water of the flood came upon the earth.
Then the flood came upon the earth for forty days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth.
The waters surged and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water.
The flood water surged even higher throughout the earth, until all the highest mountains under the sky were covered.
The water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered.
The water prevailed upon the earth one hundred and fifty days.
God remembered Noah, as well as all the wildlife and all the livestock that were with him in the ark. God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water began to subside.
The water sources from the ocean depths were blocked and the floodgates of the heavens were closed.
The water steadily receded from the earth, and by the end of 150 days the waters had decreased significantly.
The flood water continued to recede until the tenth month, when, on the first of that month, the tops of the mountains could be seen.
and sent out a raven. It went back and forth as the flood water continued to evaporate throughout the earth.
Then he sent out a dove to see whether the water on the earth's surface had gone down,
but the dove found no resting place for her foot. She returned to him in the ark because water covered the surface of the whole earth. He reached out and brought her into the ark to himself.
When the dove came to him at evening, there was a plucked olive leaf in her beak. So Noah knew that the water on the earth's surface had gone down.
In the six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the water [that had covered] the earth was dried up. Then Noah removed the ark's cover and saw that the surface of the ground was drying.
"I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall never again be cut off by the water of the flood, neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth."
I will remember My covenant between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh: water will never again become a deluge to destroy all flesh.
And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.
And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.
And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.
And he said, Take these seven lambs from me as a witness that I have made this water-hole.
And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.
Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
Let the girl to whom I say, 'Please lower your water jug so that I may drink,' and who responds, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels also'-let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master."
Before he had finished praying, there came Rebekah with her water jug on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milcah (Milcah was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor).
And the girl was very beautiful and attractive, chaste and modest, and unmarried. And she went down to the well, filled her water jar, and came up.
And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.
And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.
And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he came out quickly to the man at the water-spring.
And when he saw the nose-ring and the ornaments on his sister's hands, and when she gave him word of what the man had said to her, then he went out to the man who was waiting with the camels by the water-spring.
And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, and gave straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men's feet that were with him.
And I came today to the water-spring, and I said, O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if it is your purpose to give a good outcome to my journey,
Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;
and who responds to me, 'Drink, and I'll draw water for your camels also'-let her be the woman the Lord has appointed for my master's son.
And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.
She quickly lowered her jug from her [shoulder] and said, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels also.' So I drank, and she also watered the camels.
Now all the water-holes, which his father's servants had made in the days of Abraham, had been stopped up with earth by the Philistines.
And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
And Isaac's servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac's herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
Then they made another water-hole, and there was a fight about that, so he gave it the name of Sitnah.
Then he went away from there, and made another water-hole, about which there was no fighting: so he gave it the name of Rehoboth, for he said, Now the Lord has made room for us, and we will have fruit in this land.
Then he made an altar there, and gave worship to the name of the Lord, and he put up his tents there, and there his servants made a water-hole.
And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had digged, and said unto him, We have found water.
and he looketh, and lo, a well in the field, and lo, there three droves of a flock crouching by it, for from that well they water the droves, and the great stone is on the mouth of the well.
When all the flocks were gathered there, the [shepherds] would roll the stone from the opening of the well and water the sheep. The stone was then placed back on the well's opening.
And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.
And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.
Then when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother, coming with Laban's sheep, he came near, and rolling the stone away from the mouth of the hole, he got water for Laban's flock.
He set the peeled branches in the troughs in front of the sheep-in the water channels where the sheep came to drink. And the sheep bred when they came to drink.
And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.
Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father's bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.
