'Adversaries' in the Bible

But if you will indeed listen to and truly obey His voice and do everything that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

“O Lord, bless Levi’s substance (ability),And accept and take pleasure in the work of his hands;Crush and shatter the loins of those who rise up against him,And of those who hate him, so that they do not rise again.”

Now when Joshua was by Jericho, he looked up, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his drawn sword in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?”

“The adversaries of the Lord will be broken to pieces;He will thunder against them in the heavens,The Lord will judge the ends of the earth;And He will give strength to His king,And will exalt the horn (strength) of His anointed.”

These Israelites took away their livestock: their 50,000 camels, and 250,000 sheep, and 2,000 donkeys; and 100,000 people.

David went out to meet them and said to them, “If you have come peacefully to me to help me, my heart shall be united with you; but if you have come to betray me to my adversaries, since there is no violence or wrong in my hands, may the God of our fathers look on [what you are doing] and punish [you].”

Now when [the Samaritans] the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles from the captivity were building a temple to the Lord God of Israel,

“He has also kindled His wrath [like a fire] against meAnd He considers and counts me as one of His adversaries.

“After it, His voice roars;He thunders with the voice of His majesty,And He does not restrain His lightning [against His adversaries] when His voice is heard.

From the wicked who despoil and deal violently with me,My deadly enemies who surround me.

Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries,For false witnesses have come against me;They breathe out violence.

They repay evil for good, they attack and try to kill me,Because I follow what is good.

Through God we will have victory,For He will trample down our enemies.

You know my reproach and my shame and my dishonor [how I am insulted];My adversaries are all before You [each one fully known].

Let those who attack my life be ashamed and consumed;Let them be covered with reproach and dishonor, who seek to injure me.

Do not forget the [clamoring] voices of Your adversaries,The uproar of those who rise against You, which ascends continually [to Your ears].

He drove His enemies backward;He subjected them to lasting shame and dishonor.

“Then I would quickly subdue and humble their enemiesAnd turn My hand against their adversaries;

For behold, Your enemies, O Lord,For behold, Your enemies will perish;All who do evil will be scattered.

Fire goes before HimAnd burns up His adversaries on all sides.

My enemies taunt me all day long;Those who ridicule me use my name as a curse.

And the waters covered their adversaries;Not one of them was left.

With God we will do valiantly,For it is He who will trample down our enemies.

In return for my love, they attack me,But I am in prayer.

Let this be the reward of my attackers from the Lord,And of those who speak evil against my life.

Let them curse, but You bless.When adversaries arise, let them be ashamed,But let Your servant rejoice.

Let my attackers be clothed with dishonor,And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

The Lord (Father) says to my Lord (the Messiah, His Son),“Sit at My right handUntil I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet [subjugating them into complete submission].”

His heart is upheld, he will not fearWhile he looks [with satisfaction] on his adversaries.

My zeal has [completely] consumed me,Because my enemies have forgotten Your words.

Many are my persecutors and my adversaries,Yet I do not turn away from Your testimonies.

How blessed [happy and fortunate] is the man whose quiver is filled with them;They will not be ashamedWhen they speak with their enemies [in gatherings] at the [city] gate.

Therefore the Lord God of hosts,The Mighty One of Israel, declares:“Ah, I will be freed of My adversariesAnd avenge Myself on My enemies.

Therefore the Lord raises against Ephraim adversaries from Rezin [king of Aram]And spurs their enemies on,

As their deeds deserve, so He will repay:Wrath to His adversaries, retribution to His enemies;To the islands and coastlands He will repay.

Your holy people possessed Your sanctuary for [only] a little while;Our adversaries have trampled it down.

As [sure as] fire kindles the brushwood, as fire causes water to boil—To make Your name known to Your adversaries,That the nations may tremble at Your presence!

Pay attention to me, O Lord [and intercede];Listen to what my adversaries are saying [and are plotting against me]—

‘Therefore all who devour you will be devoured;And all your adversaries, every one of them, will go into captivity.And they who plunder you will become plunder,And all who prey upon you I will give for prey.

For that day belongs to the Lord God of hosts,A day of vengeance, that He may avenge Himself on His adversaries.And the sword will devour and be satiatedAnd drink its fill of their blood;For the Lord God of hosts has a sacrifice [like that of a great sin offering]In the north country by the river Euphrates.

“All who found them have devoured them;And their adversaries have said, ‘We are not guilty,Because they have sinned against the Lord [and are no longer holy to Him], their [true] habitation of righteousness and justice,Even the Lord, the [confident] hope of their fathers.’

Her adversaries have become her masters,Her enemies prosper;For the Lord has caused her griefBecause of the multitude of her transgressions;Her young children have goneInto captivity before the enemy.

Zion stretches out her hands,But there is no comforter for her.The Lord has commanded concerning JacobThat his neighbors should be his enemies;Jerusalem has become a filthy thing [an object of contempt] among them.

Also they will take your riches as spoil and plunder your merchandise, and tear down your walls and your pleasant houses, and throw your stones and your timber and the debris [from your city] out in the water.

“I will set fire to Egypt;Pelusium will writhe in [great] anguish,Thebes shall be torn openAnd Memphis shall be in daily distress.

Your hand will be lifted up against your adversaries,And all your enemies shall be cut off and destroyed.

The Lord is a jealous and avenging God [protecting and demanding what is rightfully and uniquely His];The Lord avenges and He is full of wrath.The Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries,And He reserves wrath for His enemies.

because a wide door for effective service has opened to me [in Ephesus, a very promising opportunity], and there are many adversaries.

And in no way be alarmed or intimidated [in anything] by your opponents, for such [constancy and fearlessness on your part] is a [clear] sign [a proof and a seal] for them of [their impending] destruction, but [a clear sign] for you of deliverance and salvation, and that too, from God.
