1 When any controversy arises among you, will any one presume to appeal to the Gentiles, and not to Christians?
1 Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?
1 When one of you has a complaint against another, does he dare to take the matter before those who are unrighteous and not before the saints?
2 don't you know that these are to judge the world? if the world is to be judg'd by you, are not you qualify'd to decide your petty causes?
2 Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
2 Or don’t you know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest cases?
2 You know that the saints will rule the world, don't you? And if the world is going to be ruled by you, can't you handle insignificant cases?
3 don't you know that we shall be judges of angels? much more then of the affairs of life?
3 Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?
3 Don’t you know that we will judge angels—not to mention ordinary matters?
3 You know that we will rule angels, not to mention things in this life, don't you?
4 if then you have the cognizance of such matters, why do ye set those to judge who are despised by the church? I speak it to your shame.
4 If then ye have judgments of things pertaining to this life, set them to judge who are least esteemed in the church.
4 So if you have cases dealing with this life, why do you appoint as judges people who have no standing in the church?
5 what, is there not a man of experience amongst you, capable of being arbitrator between his brethren?
5 I speak to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you? no, not one that shall be able to judge between his brethren?
5 I say this to make you feel ashamed. Has it come to this, that there is not one person among you who is wise enough to settle disagreements between brothers?
6 but when a contest arises, you must refer the decision to infidels?
6 But brother goeth to law with brother, and that before the unbelievers.
6 Instead, one brother goes to court against another brother, and before unbelieving judges, at that!
7 beside, you are absolutely in the wrong in going to law with one another at all: why don't you rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer loss?
7 Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?
7 The very fact that you have lawsuits among yourselves is already a defeat for you. Why not rather just accept the wrong? Why not rather be cheated?
8 nay, in this case, you act injuriously, and do damage even to your brethren.
8 Nay, ye do wrong, and defraud, and that your brethren.
8 Instead, you act unjustly and cheat—and you do this to believers!
8 Instead, you yourselves practice doing wrong and cheating others, and brothers at that!
9 Know you not that the unjust shall not inherit the kingdom of God? be not deceived: neither the licentious, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor the brutal,
9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
9 You know that wicked people will not inherit the kingdom of God, don't you? Stop deceiving yourselves! Sexually immoral people, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, homosexuals,
10 nor thieves, nor misers, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor raparees, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
10 thieves, greedy people, drunks, slanderers, and robbers will not inherit the kingdom of God.
11 and such were some of you: but you have been washed, you have been sanctified, you have been justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the spirit of our God.
11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
11 That is what some of you were! But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of our Lord Jesus the Messiah and by the Spirit of our God.
12 Are all things lawful for me? however, all things are not expedient: are all things lawful for me? however, I will not be a slave to any.
12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
12 Everything is permissible for me, but not everything is helpful. Everything is permissible for me, but I will not allow anything to control me.
13 "meat is design'd for the belly, and the belly for meat:" true, yet God has design'd both for destruction. now the body is not design'd for licentiousness, but for the glory of the Lord; since the Lord died for the glorification of the body:
13 (U)Food is for the (g)stomach and the (h)stomach is for food, but God will (V)do away with both (i)of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but (W)for the Lord, and (X)the Lord is for the body.
13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
13 Food is for the stomach, and the stomach is for food, but God will make them both unnecessary. The body is not meant for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
14 for as God hath raised up the Lord, so will he likewise raise us up to partake of his own power.
14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
14 God raised the Lord, and by his power he will also raise us.
15 Don't you know, that your bodies are parts of Christ's mystical body? now, how can that which is Christ's, be made the property of a very creature?
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
15 You know that your bodies belong to the Messiah, don't you? Should I take what belongs to the Messiah and unite them with a prostitute? Certainly not!
16 it cannot be. why, don't you perceive, that where there is such an attachment, they are but as one person? for the scripture says, "they two shall be as one."
16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
16 You know that the person who unites himself with a prostitute becomes one body with her, don't you? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh."
17 but he that is attach'd to the Lord, is united to him by one and the same spirit.
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
17 But the person who unites himself with the Lord becomes one spirit with him.
18 flee licentiousness. no other sin that a man commits does affect the church as a body: but the licentious commits a fraud against the whole body to which he belongs.
18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.
18 Keep on running away from sexual immorality. Any other sin that a person commits is outside his body, but the person who sins sexually sins against his own body.
19 what! know ye not that your bodies are the temple of the holy spirit, which is in you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
19 You know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God, don't you? You do not belong to yourselves,
20 for you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
20 because you were bought for a price. Therefore, glorify God with your bodies.
