1 we have it from all quarters, that incest is practis'd among you, and such as is not among the Gentiles, that of a man's having his father's wife.
1 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.
1 It is actually reported that sexual immorality exists among you, and of a kind that is not found even among the gentiles. A man is actually living with his father's wife!
2 this you have made a matter of levity, instead of being concern'd in discarding him that has done such an action.
2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.
2 And you are being arrogant instead of being filled with grief and seeing to it that the man who did this is removed from among you.
3 as for me, though I am absent in person, yet being present by my authority, with regard to him that has committed this fact, I am come to the same resolution, as if I was present,
3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,
3 Even though I am away from you physically, I am with you in spirit. I have already passed judgment on the man who did this, as though I were present with you.
4 that is, when you are assembled, and I virtually there, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus with my spirit and with the power of our Lord Jesus,
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are gathered together (and I am there in spirit), and the power of our Lord Jesus is there, too,
5 to deliver him up to satan, to suffer corporal punishment, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus Christ.
5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
5 turn this man over to Satan for the destruction of his body, so that his spirit may be saved on the Day of the Lord.
6 Your levity is very indecent: don't you know that a little leaven infects the whole mass?
6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
6 Your boasting is not good. You know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough, don't you?
7 purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new mass, since you should be without leaven. for Christ our paschal lamb has been sacrificed for us.
7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
7 Get rid of the old yeast so that you may be a new batch of dough, since you are to be free from yeast. For the Messiah, our Passover, has been sacrificed.
8 therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with unaffected sincerity and truth.
8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
8 So let's keep celebrating the festival, neither with old yeast nor with yeast that is evil and wicked, but with yeast-free bread that is both sincere and true.
9 When I formerly writ to you, not to keep company with the vicious:
9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
9 I wrote to you in my letter to stop associating with people who are sexually immoral
10 I did not mean the vicious Gentiles, the misers, the raparees, or with idolaters; for then you must have gone out of the world.
10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
10 not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, greedy, robbers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world.
11 but my meaning was, not to keep company with any christian known to be vicious, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or rapacious, no not even to eat with such a one.
11 But (f)actually, I wrote to you not to associate (g)with any so-called (R)brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or (S)an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a one.
11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
11 But now I am writing(c) you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer(d)(Q) who is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard(R) or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.
11 But now I am writing to you to stop associating with any so-called brother if he is sexually immoral, greedy, an idolater, a slanderer, a drunk, or a robber. You must even stop eating with someone like that.
12 for what have I to do to judge those who are without the church; but are not you to judge those that are within?
12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
12 After all, is it my business to judge outsiders? You are to judge those who are in the community, aren't you?
13 those that are without, God will judge. therefore expel the libertine from your community.
13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.
13 God will judge outsiders. "Expel that wicked man."
