Concerning Food Sacrificed To Idols

1 Now as to things which have been sacrificed to idols. This is a subject which we already understand--because we all have knowledge of it. Knowledge, however, tends to make people conceited; it is love that builds us up.

1 Now concerning (A)things sacrificed to idols, we know that we all have (B)knowledge. Knowledge (a)(C)makes arrogant, but love (D)edifies.

1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

1 About food offered to idols:(A) We know that “we all have knowledge.”(a) Knowledge inflates with pride,(B) but love(C) builds up.

1 Now concerning food offered to idols: We know that we all possess knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.

2 If any one imagines that he already possesses any true knowledge, he has as yet attained to no knowledge of the kind to which he ought to have attained;

2 (E)If anyone supposes that he knows anything, he has not yet (F)known as he ought to know;

2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.

2 If anyone thinks he knows anything, he does not yet know it as he ought to know it.(D)

2 If anyone thinks he really knows something, he has not yet learned it as he ought to know it.

3 but if any one loves God, that man is known by God.

3 but if anyone loves God, he (G)is known by Him.

3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

3 But if anyone loves God,(E) he is known(F) by Him.

3 But anyone who loves God is known by him.

4 As to eating things which have been sacrificed to idols, we are fully aware that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is no God but One.

4 Therefore concerning the eating of (H)things sacrificed to idols, we know that (b)there is (I)no such thing as an idol in the world, and that (J)there is no God but one.

4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.

4 About eating food offered to idols, then, we know that “an idol is nothing in the world,” and that “there is no God but one.”(G)

4 Now concerning eating food offered to idols: We know that no idol is real in this world and that there is only one God.

5 For if so-called gods do exist, either in Heaven or on earth--and in fact there are many such gods and many such lords--

5 For even if (K)there are so-called gods whether in heaven or on earth, as indeed there are many gods and many lords,

5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)

5 For even if there are so-called gods,(H) whether in heaven or on earth—as there are many “gods” and many “lords”—

5 For even if there are "gods" in heaven and on earth (as indeed there are many so-called "gods" and "lords"),

6 yet *we* have but one God, the Father, who is the source of all things and for whose service we exist, and but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom we and all things exist.

6 yet for us (L)there is but one God, (M)the Father, (N)from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and (O)one Lord, Jesus Christ, (P)by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.

6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

6 yet for us there is one God, the Father.(I)All things are from Him,(J)and we exist for Him.And there is one Lord, Jesus Christ.All things are through Him,and we exist through Him.(K)

6 yet for us there is only one God, the Father, from whom everything came into being and for whom we live. And there is only one Lord, Jesus the Messiah, through whom everything came into being and through whom we live.

7 But all believers do not recognize these facts. Some, from force of habit in relation to the idol, even now eat idol sacrifices as such, and their consciences, being but weak, are polluted.

7 However not all men (Q)have this knowledge; but (R)some, being accustomed to the idol until now, eat food as if it were sacrificed to an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

7 Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge: for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled.

7 However, not everyone has this knowledge. In fact, some have been so used to idolatry up until now that when they eat food offered to an idol, their conscience, being weak, is defiled.

7 But not everyone has this knowledge. Some people are so accustomed to idolatry that when they eat food that has been offered to an idol, their conscience becomes contaminated because it is weak.

8 It is true that a particular kind of food will not bring us into God's presence; we are neither inferior to others if we abstain from it, nor superior to them if we eat it.

8 But (S)food will not (c)commend us to God; we are neither (d)the worse if we do not eat, nor (e)the better if we do eat.

8 But meat commendeth us not to God: for neither, if we eat, are we the better; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse.

8 Food will not make us acceptable to God. We are not inferior if we don’t eat, and we are not better if we do eat.(L)

8 However, food will not bring us closer to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat food that has been offered to an idol, and no better off if we do.

9 But take care lest this liberty of yours should prove a hindrance to the progress of weak believers.

9 But (T)take care that this (f)liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the (U)weak.

9 But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

9 But be careful that this right of yours in no way becomes a stumbling block(M) to the weak.

9 But you must see to it that this right of yours does not become a stumbling block for those who are weak.

10 For if any one were to see you, who know the real truth of this matter, reclining at table in an idol's temple, would not his conscience (supposing him to be a weak believer)

10 For if someone sees you, who have (V)knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat (W)things sacrificed to idols?

10 For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol's temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols;

10 For if someone sees you, the one who has this knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, won’t his weak conscience be encouraged to eat food offered to idols?

10 For if anyone with a weak conscience sees you, who know better, eating in an idol's temple, he will be encouraged to eat what has been offered to idols, won't he?

11 Why, your knowledge becomes the ruin of the weak believer--your brother, for whom Christ died!

11 For through (X)your knowledge he who is weak (Y)is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died.

11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?

11 Then the weak person, the brother for whom Christ died,(N) is ruined(b)(O) by your knowledge.(P)

11 In that case, the weak brother for whom the Messiah died is ruined by your knowledge.

12 Moreover when you thus sin against the brethren and wound their weak consciences, you are, in reality, sinning against Christ.

12 (Z)And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin (AA)against Christ.

12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

12 Now when you sin like this against the brothers and wound their weak conscience, you are sinning against Christ.

12 When you sin against your brothers in this way and wound their weak consciences, you are sinning against the Messiah.

13 Therefore if what I eat causes my brother to fall, never again to the end of my days will I touch any kind of animal food, for fear I should cause my brother to fall.

13 Therefore, (AB)if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble.

13 Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.

13 Therefore, if food causes my brother to fall, I will never again eat meat,(Q) so that I won’t cause my brother to fall.

13 Therefore, if food that I eat causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, in order to keep my brother from stumbling.
