War Between Elijah And The Prophets Of Baal

1 It happened many days [later] that the word of Yahweh came to Elijah in the third year, saying, "Go, present yourself to Ahab so that I may give rain on the surface of the earth."

1 Now it happened (A)after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, “Go, show yourself to Ahab, and (B)I will send rain on the face of the earth.”

1 And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

1 After a long time, the word of the Lord(A) came to Elijah in the third year:(B) “Go and present yourself to Ahab.(C) I will send rain on the surface of the land.”

1 Quite some time later three years later! this message from the LORD came to Elijah: "Go visit Ahab, and I'll send some rain to the surface of the ground."

2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine [was] severe in Samaria.

2 So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria.

2 And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.(D)

2 So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab, right when the famine in Samaria was most severe.

3 Ahab summoned Obadiah who [was] over the house. (Now Obadiah was fearing Yahweh greatly.

3 Ahab called Obadiah (C)who was over the household. (Now Obadiah (a)(D)feared the Lord greatly;

3 And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

3 Ahab called for Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace.(E) Obadiah was a man who greatly feared the Lord(F)

3 Ahab called for Obadiah, his household supervisor. This man, who feared the LORD very much,

4 It had happened that when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them {by fifties} in the cave and sustained them [with] food and water.)

4 for (E)when Jezebel (b)destroyed the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets and hid them by fifties in a cave, and (F)provided them with bread and water.)

4 For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

4 and took 100 prophets and hid them, 50 men to a cave, and provided them with food and water when Jezebel(G) slaughtered the Lord’s prophets.(H)

4 had taken 100 prophets and had hidden them by fifties in a cave, providing them with food and water when Jezebel was trying to destroy the LORD's prophets.

5 Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the wadis. Perhaps we may find green grass that we may keep horses and mules alive and that we might not lose any of the animals."

5 Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the valleys; perhaps we will find grass and keep the horses and mules alive, and not (c)have to kill some of the cattle.”

5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

5 Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go throughout the land to every spring of water and to every wadi. Perhaps we’ll find grass so we can keep the horses and mules alive and not have to destroy any cattle.”(I)

5 Ahab had instructed Obadiah, "Go throughout the land to all of the water springs and to all of the valleys. Maybe we'll find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive. Also, maybe we won't have to kill some of our cattle."

6 So they divided the land for themselves in order to pass through it; Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

6 So they divided the land between them to (d)survey it; Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiah went another way by himself.

6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

6 They divided the land between them in order to cover it. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went the other way by himself.

6 So they divided the land between them so they could conduct their survey. Ahab went off by himself in one direction and Obadiah went off by himself in the other.

7 It happened that Obadiah [was] on the way, and suddenly Elijah was there to meet him. When he recognized him, he fell on his face and said, "[Is] this you, my lord Elijah?"

7 Now as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah (e)met him, (G)and he recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is this you, Elijah my master?”

7 And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

7 While Obadiah was walking along the road, Elijah suddenly met him.(J) When Obadiah recognized him, he fell with his face to the ground and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”

7 While Obadiah was on the road, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him and bowed down with his face to the ground. "It's you, isn't it, my master Elijah?"

8 He said to him, "I [am]. Go, say to your lord, 'Elijah [is] here.'"

8 He said to him, “It is I. Go, say to your master, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’”

8 And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

8 “It is I,” he replied. “Go tell your lord, ‘Elijah is here!’”

8 "I am," he replied. "Go tell your master, "Look! Elijah!'"

9 He said, "How have I sinned that you [are] giving your servant into the hand of Ahab to kill me?

9 He said, “What (f)sin have I committed, that you are giving your servant into the hand of Ahab to put me to death?

9 And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

9 But Obadiah said, “What sin have I committed,(K) that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to put me to death?

9 But Obadiah replied, "What did I do wrong, that you would put me in a position where Ahab would execute me?

10 {As Yahweh your God lives}, surely there is not a nation or a kingdom to which my lord has not sent me to seek you. [If] they would say, 'He is not here,' then he would make the kingdom or the nation swear that it could not find you.

10 (H)As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent to search for you; and when they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made the kingdom or nation swear that they could not find you.

10 As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent someone to search for you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made that kingdom or nation swear they had not found you.

10 As surely as the LORD your God lives, there isn't a nation or kingdom where my master hasn't tried to find you. Whenever they would say "He isn't here,' he forced that kingdom or nation to swear that they hadn't seen you.

11 Now you [are] saying, 'Go, say to your lord: "Elijah [is] here." '

11 And now you are saying, ‘Go, say to your master, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’

11 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

11 “Now you say, ‘Go tell your lord, “Elijah is here!”’

11 But now you're saying "Go tell your master, "Elijah is here!"'

12 And it will happen that I will go from you and the Spirit of Yahweh will carry you up to where I do not know. Then I will come to tell Ahab, but he will not find you, and then he will kill me, [even though] your servant has feared Yahweh from my youth.

12 It will come about when I leave you (I)that the Spirit of the Lord will carry you where I do not know; so when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have (g)feared the Lord from my youth.

12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.

12 But when I leave you, the Spirit of the Lord may carry you off(L) to some place I don’t know. Then when I go report to Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the Lord from my youth.

12 As soon as I've left you, the Spirit of the LORD will carry you off to I don't know where! Then when I go tell Ahab and he can't find you, he'll kill me, even though I have been your servant and have feared the LORD since I was young!

13 Has it not been told to my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of Yahweh? I hid a hundred men of the prophets of Yahweh {by fifties} in the cave, and I sustained them [with] food and water.

13 (J)Has it not been told to my master what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, that I hid (h)a hundred prophets of the Lord by fifties in a cave, and provided them with bread and water?

13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD'S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

13 Wasn’t it reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel slaughtered the Lord’s prophets? I hid 100 of the prophets of the Lord, 50 men to a cave, and I provided them with food and water.

13 Hasn't anyone told you, my master, what I did when Jezebel was killing the LORD's prophets? I hid 100 of the LORD's prophets by fifties in a cave and provided food and water for them.

14 Now you [are] saying, 'Go, say to your lord: "Elijah [is] here," ' and he will kill me."

14 And now you are saying, ‘Go, say to your master, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; he will then kill me.”

14 And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here: and he shall slay me.

14 Now you say, ‘Go tell your lord, “Elijah is here!”’ He will kill me!”

14 Now you're saying, "Go tell your master, "Elijah's here!"' He's sure to kill me!"

15 Elijah said, "{As Yahweh of hosts lives}, before whom I stand, I will certainly show myself to him today."

15 Elijah said, “(K)As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”

15 And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day.

15 Then Elijah said, “As the Lord of Hosts lives,(M) before whom I stand, today I will present myself to Ahab.”

15 But Elijah promised him, "As the LORD of the Heavenly Armies lives, in whose presence I stand, I will appear to Ahab today."

Elijah Confronts Baal's Prophets

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and he told him, so Ahab went to meet Elijah.

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

16 Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him. Then Ahab went to meet Elijah.

16 So Obadiah went out to meet Ahab and reported to him. Then Ahab went to meet Elijah.

Elijah And The Prophets Of Baal On Mount Carmel

17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "[Is] this you [who] throws Israel into confusion?"

17 When Ahab saw Elijah, (L)Ahab said to him, “Is this you, you troubler of Israel?”

17 And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is that you, you destroyer of Israel?”(N)

17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab asked him, "Is it really you, you destroyer of Israel?"

18 He said, "I did not throw Israel into confusion; rather you and the house of your father [have] by forsaking the commands of Yahweh when you went after the Baals!

18 He said, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, because (M)you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and (N)you have followed the Baals.

18 And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

18 He replied, “I have not destroyed Israel, but you and your father’s house have, because you have abandoned the Lord’s commands(O) and followed the Baals.(P)

18 But Elijah replied, "I'm no destroyer of Israel. But you and your ancestor's household have been doing that, because you have abandoned the LORD's commandments and have followed the Baals.

19 So then, send [word] and assemble all of Israel to me on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at the table of Jezebel."

19 Now then send and gather to me all Israel at (O)Mount Carmel, (P)together with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of (Q)the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

19 Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

19 Now summon all Israel to meet me at Mount Carmel,(Q) along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah(R) who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

19 So go gather all of Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. Bring along 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the Asherah who are funded at Jezebel's expense."

Elijah At Mount Carmel

20 So Ahab sent [word] among the {Israelites}, and he assembled the prophets to Mount Carmel.

20 So Ahab sent a message among all the sons of Israel and brought the prophets together at Mount Carmel.

20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

20 So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and gathered the prophets at Mount Carmel.

20 Ahab sent for the Israelis and brought the prophets together at Mount Carmel,

21 Elijah approached to all the people and said, "How long [will] you [go] limping over two opinions? If Yahweh [is] God, go after him; but if Baal, go after him." But the people did not answer him a word.

21 Elijah came near to all the people and said, “(R)How long will you (i)hesitate between two opinions? (S)If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.

21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

21 Then Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you hesitate between two opinions?(S) If Yahweh is God, follow Him. But if Baal, follow him.”(T) But the people didn’t answer him a word.

21 where Elijah approached all the people and asked them, "How long will you keep hesitating between both sides? If the LORD is God, go after him. If Baal, go after him." But the people didn't say a word.

22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone [am] left a prophet of Yahweh, but the prophets of Baal [are] four hundred and fifty men.

22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I (T)alone am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal’s prophets are (U)450 men.

22 Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I am the only remaining prophet of the Lord,(U) but Baal’s prophets are 450 men.

22 So Elijah told the people, "I'm the only one left over as a prophet of the LORD, am I? But Baal's prophets number 450 men?

23 Let them give us two bulls, and let them choose for themselves one bull, cut him in pieces, and put it on the wood, but don't let them start a fire on it. I will prepare the other bull and set it on the wood, but I will put no fire [on it].

23 Now let them give us two oxen; and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a fire under it.

23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

23 Let two bulls be given to us. They are to choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and place it on the wood but not light the fire. I will prepare the other bull and place it on the wood but not light the fire.

23 So let them provide two oxen. They can choose one ox for themselves. Cut it up, lay it on top of some wood, but don't set fire to it. I will prepare the other ox and lay it on top of some wood, and I won't set fire to it.

24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh, and it shall be that the god who answers by fire, he [is] God." Then all the people answered and said, "The word [is] good!"

24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord, and (V)the God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people said, “(j)That is a good idea.”

24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of Yahweh.(V) The God who answers with fire, He is God.”All the people answered, “That sounds good.”

24 Then you can call on the name of your god, and I'll call on the name of the LORD. Let the God who answers by fire be our God!" "That's a good idea!" all the people shouted.

25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you [are] the majority, and call on the name of your god, but don't set fire [under it]."

25 So Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one ox for yourselves and prepare it first for you are many, and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”

25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god but don’t light the fire.”

25 So Elijah told the prophets of Baal, "Choose an ox for yourselves and you prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but don't set fire to the offering."

26 So they took the bull that he allowed to them, prepared it, and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, "O Baal, answer us!" But there was no voice and there was no answer, so they limped about the altar which they had made.

26 Then they took the ox which (k)was given them and they prepared it and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon saying, “O Baal, answer us.” But there was (W)no voice and no one answered. And they (l)leaped about the altar which (m)they made.

26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

26 So they took the bull that he gave them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound;(W) no one answered. Then they danced, hobbling around the altar they had made.

26 So they took the ox that was given to them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from early morning until noon. "Baal! Answer us!" they cried. But there was no response. Nobody answered. So they kept on dancing around the altar that they had made.

27 It happened at noon that Elijah mocked them and said, "Call out with a loud voice, for he [is] a god! Perhaps he is meditating, or {is using the bathroom}, or [is] on a journey. Perhaps he [is] asleep and must wake up!"

27 It came about at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god; either he is occupied or gone aside, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and needs to be awakened.”

27 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

27 At noon Elijah mocked them. He said, “Shout loudly, for he’s a god! Maybe he’s thinking it over; maybe he has wandered away;(a) or maybe he’s on the road. Perhaps he’s sleeping and will wake up!”(X)

27 Starting about noon, Elijah began to tease them: "Shout louder! "He's a god, so maybe he's busy. "Maybe he's relieving himself. "Maybe he's busy someplace. "Maybe he's taking a nap and somebody needs to wake him up."

28 So they called out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves with swords and with spears as was their custom, until the blood poured out over them.

28 So they cried with a loud voice and (X)cut themselves according to their custom with swords and lances until the blood gushed out on them.

28 And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

28 They shouted loudly, and cut themselves(Y) with knives and spears, according to their custom, until blood gushed over them.

28 So the prophets of Baal cried even louder and slashed themselves with swords and lances until their blood gushed out all over them, as was their custom.

29 It happened as noon passed, they raged until the [time of] the evening offering, but there was no voice, there was no answer, and no [one] paid attention.

29 When midday was past, they (n)raved (Y)until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice; but there was no voice, no one answered, and no (o)one paid attention.

29 And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

29 All afternoon they kept on raving until the offering of the evening sacrifice,(Z) but there was no sound; no one answered, no one paid attention.(AA)

29 They kept on raving right through midday and until it was time to offer the evening sacrifice, but there was still no response. Nobody answered, and nobody paid attention.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come near to me," so all the people came closer to him. He repaired the altar of Yahweh [that had been] destroyed.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. And (Z)he repaired the altar of the Lord which had been torn down.

30 And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near me.” So all the people approached him. Then he repaired the Lord’s altar that had been torn down:(AB)

30 Eventually, Elijah told everybody, "Come here!" So everybody approached him, and he repaired the LORD's altar that had been torn down.

31 Elijah took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of God came, saying, "Israel shall be your name."

31 Elijah took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “(AA)Israel shall be your name.”

31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

31 Elijah took 12 stones—according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Israel will be your name”(AC)

31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes of Jacob's descendants, to whom the message from the LORD had come that "Israel is to be your name."

32 With them, he built an altar in the name of Yahweh, and he made a trench {which would have held} about two seahs of seed, all around the altar.

32 So with the stones he built an altar in (AB)the name of the Lord, and he made a trench around the altar, large enough to hold two (p)measures of seed.

32 And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

32 and he built an altar(AD) with the stones in the name of Yahweh. Then he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold about four gallons.(b)(c)

32 So Elijah used the stones to build an altar to the name of the LORD. But then he dug a trench around the altar large enough to hold two measures of seed.

33 And he arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces, and placed [it] on the wood. Then he said, "Fill four jars [with] water, and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood."

33 (AC)Then he arranged the wood and cut the ox in pieces and laid it on the wood.

33 And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

33 Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and placed it on the wood. He said, “Fill four water pots with water and pour it on the offering to be burned and on the wood.”

33 Then he laid the wood in order, cut the bull into pieces, and laid them on top of the wood. "Fill four pitchers with water," he ordered. "Then pour them out on the burnt offering and the wood."

34 He said, "Do [it] again!" They did [it] again. He said, "Do [it] a third time!" So they did [it] a third time.

34 And he said, “Fill four pitchers with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood.” And he said, “Do it a second time,” and they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time,” and they did it a third time.

34 And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

34 Then he said, “A second time!” and they did it a second time. And then he said, “A third time!” and they did it a third time.

34 "Do it a second time," he ordered. So they did it a second time.

35 The water went all around the altar, and the trench also was filled [with] water.

35 The water flowed around the altar and he also filled the trench with water.

35 And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

35 So the water ran all around the altar; he even filled the trench with water.

35 "Do it a third time," he said. So they did it a third time. The water ran down around the altar and completely filled the trench.

36 It happened at the offering of the [evening] oblation, Elijah the prophet went near, and he said, "O Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel; let it be known today that you [are] God in Israel and [that] I [am] your servant and [that] I have done all of these things by your words.

36 (AD)At the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “(AE)O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, today let it be known that (AF)You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and (AG)I have done all these things at Your word.

36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

36 At the time for offering the evening sacrifice,(AE) Elijah the prophet approached the altar and said, “Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,(AF) today let it be known(AG) that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that at Your word I have done all these things.

36 As the time for the evening offering arrived, Elijah the prophet approached and said, "LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I, your servant, have done all of this in obedience to your word.

37 Answer me, O Yahweh, answer me; that this people may know that you, O Yahweh, [are] God and that you have turned their hearts back again."

37 Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that You, O Lord, are God, and that You have turned their heart back again.”

37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

37 Answer me, Lord! Answer me so that this people will know that You, Yahweh, are God(AH) and that You have turned their hearts back.”

37 Answer me, LORD! Answer me so that this people may know that you, LORD, are God, and that you are turning back their hearts again."

38 Then the fire of Yahweh fell, and it consumed the burnt offering, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust; and the water which [was] in the trench it licked up!

38 Then the (AH)fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

38 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

38 Then Yahweh’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.

38 Right then the LORD's fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, the dust, and even the water that was in the trench!

39 When all the people saw, they fell on their faces and said, "Yahweh, he [is] God! Yahweh, he [is] God!"

39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “(AI)The Lord, He is God; the Lord, He is God.”

39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

39 When all the people saw it, they fell facedown(AI) and said, “Yahweh, He is God! Yahweh, He is God!”(AJ)

39 When all the people saw what had happened, they fell flat on their faces and cried out "The LORD is God! The LORD is God!"

40 Then Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; don't let any man of them escape!" So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the wadi of Kishon and killed them there.

40 Then Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape.” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to (AJ)the brook Kishon, (AK)and slew them there.

40 And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

40 Then Elijah ordered them, “Seize the prophets of Baal!(AK) Do not let even one of them escape.” So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Wadi Kishon(AL) and slaughtered them there.(AM)

40 But Elijah said, "Arrest the prophets of Baal. Don't let even one of them get away." So the people seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Wadi Kishon and executed them there.

The Lord Sends Rain

41 Then Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink, for [there is] the sound of the noise of rain."

41 Now Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of the roar of a heavy shower.”

41 And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

41 Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a rainstorm.”(AN)

41 After this, Elijah told Ahab, "Get up and have something to eat and drink, because there's the sound of a coming rainstorm."

42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink while Elijah went to the top of Carmel, bent down to the earth, and put his face between his knees.

42 So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah went up to the top of (AL)Carmel; and he (AM)crouched down on the earth and put his face between his knees.

42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

42 So Ahab went to eat and drink, but Elijah went up to the summit of Carmel.(AO) He bowed down on the ground and put his face between his knees.(AP)

42 So Ahab got up to get something to eat and drink while Elijah went back up to the top of Mount Carmel, where he bowed low to the ground and placed his face between his knees.

43 Then he said to his servant, "Please go [and] look in the direction of [the] sea." So he went up and looked; then he said, "There is nothing." Then he said, "Go back," seven times.

43 He said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” So he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go back” seven times.

43 And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

43 Then he said to his servant, “Go up and look toward the sea.”So he went up, looked, and said, “There’s nothing.”Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”

43 Then he told his young servant, "Go and look toward the sea." So he went and looked out to sea. "Nothing there," he said.

44 It happened that at the seventh time, he said, "Look, there is a small cloud, as [the] hand of a man, coming up from the sea." Then [Elijah] said, "Go up, say to Ahab, 'Harness [your horses] and go down, lest the rain stop you.'"

44 It came about at the seventh time, that he said, “Behold, (AN)a cloud as small as a man’s hand is coming up from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘(q)Prepare your chariot and go down, so that the heavy shower does not stop you.’”

44 And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.

44 On the seventh(AQ) time, he reported, “There’s a cloud as small as a man’s hand coming from the sea.”Then Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Get your chariot ready and go down so the rain doesn’t stop you.’”

44 But Elijah told him to go back seven times. On the seventh look, he said, "Look! There's a cloud, a small one, about the size of a man's hand. It's coming up out of the sea!" "Get up and find Ahab!" Elijah said. "Tell him, "Mount your chariot and ride down the mountain so the storm doesn't stop you.'"

45 {In no time} the heavens grew black [with] clouds and wind, and there was heavy rain. Ahab rode and he went to Jezreel,

45 In a little while the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy shower. And Ahab rode and went to (AO)Jezreel.

45 And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

45 In a little while, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and there was a downpour. So Ahab got in his chariot and went to Jezreel.(AR)

45 A little while later, the sky turned black with storm clouds and winds, and there was a heavy shower. So Ahab rode off to Jezreel.

46 but the hand of Yahweh was on Elijah; he girded up his loins and ran before Ahab as one comes to Jezreel.

46 Then (AP)the hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and (AQ)he girded up his loins and (r)outran Ahab (s)to Jezreel.

46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

46 The power of the Lord(AS) was on Elijah, and he tucked his mantle under his belt(AT) and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

46 After Ahab had left, the hand of the LORD came upon Elijah, and he tucked his mantle into his belt and outran Ahab in a race to the city gate of Jezreel.
