The Ark Of The Covenant Among The Philistines

1 Now the Philistines took the ark of God and (A)brought it from Ebenezer to (B)Ashdod.

1 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.

1 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod,(B)

1 The Philistines took the Ark of God and brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

1 Then the Philistines took the ark of God, and they brought it from Ebenezer to (a)Ashdod.

2 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it to (C)the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon.

2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

2 brought it into the temple of Dagon(a)(C) and placed it next to his statue.(b)

2 Then the Philistines took the Ark of God, brought it to the temple of Dagon, and placed it beside Dagon.

2 They took the ark of God and brought it into the house of Dagon and set it beside [the image of] Dagon [their chief idol].

3 When the Ashdodites arose early the next morning, behold, (D)Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and (E)set him in his place again.

3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the LORD. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

3 When the people of Ashdod got up early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen with his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord.(D) So they took Dagon and returned him to his place.

3 When the people of Ashdod got up the next morning, there was Dagon, lying on the ground in front of the Ark of the LORD. They took Dagon and put him back in his place.

3 When the people of Ashdod got up early the next day, behold, Dagon had fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and returned him to his place.

4 But when they arose early the next morning, behold, (F)Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. And the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold; (a)only the trunk of Dagon was left to him.

4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the LORD; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.

4 But when they got up early the next morning, there was Dagon, fallen with his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. This time, both Dagon’s head and the palms of his hands were broken off and lying on the threshold. Only Dagon’s torso remained.(c)

4 But when they got up the next morning, there was Dagon, lying on the ground again in front of the Ark of the LORD. Dagon's head and both of his arms were broken off and lying on the threshold. Only the trunk of Dagon was left intact.

4 But when they got up early the next morning, behold, Dagon had [again] fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord, and his head and both palms of his hands were [lying] cut off on the threshold; only the trunk [portion] of [the idol of] Dagon was left on him.

5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor all who enter Dagon’s house (G)tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

5 That is why, to this day, the priests of Dagon and everyone who enters the temple of Dagon in Ashdod do not step on Dagon’s threshold.

5 This is why neither the priests of Dagon nor anyone who enters the temple of Dagon step on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

5 This is the reason neither the priests of Dagon nor any who enter Dagon’s house step on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.

6 Now (H)the hand of the Lord was heavy on the Ashdodites, and (I)He ravaged them and smote them with (J)tumors, both Ashdod and its territories.

6 But the hand of the LORD was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.

6 The Lord’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod,(E) terrorizing(F) and afflicting the people of Ashdod and its territory with tumors.(d)(e)(G)

6 The LORD heavily oppressed the people of Ashdod, devastating and afflicting Ashdod and its territories with tumors of the groin.

6 Then the hand of the Lord was heavy on the people of Ashdod, and He caused them to be dumbfounded and struck them with (b)tumors, both Ashdod and its territory.

7 When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for His hand is severe on us and on Dagon our god.”

7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

7 When the men of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of Israel’s God must not stay here with us, because His hand is strongly against us and our god Dagon.”

7 When the men of Ashdod saw how things were, they said, "Don't let the Ark of the God of Israel stay with us, because he is severely attacking us and our god Dagon."

7 When the men of Ashdod saw what had happened, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for His hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.”

8 So they sent and (K)gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” And they said, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” And they brought the ark of the God of Israel around.

8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.

8 So they called all the Philistine rulers together(H) and asked, “What should we do with the ark of Israel’s God?”“The ark of Israel’s God should be moved to Gath,” they replied. So the men of Ashdod moved the ark.

8 They sent messengers and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and asked, "What are we to do with the Ark of the God of Israel?" They said, "Let the Ark of the God of Israel move to Gath." So they moved the Ark of the God of Israel.

8 So they sent word and gathered all the lords (governors) of the Philistines to them and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to (c)Gath.” So they took the ark of the God of Israel there.

9 After they had brought it around, (L)the hand of the Lord was against the city with very great confusion; and He smote the men of the city, both young and old, so that (M)tumors broke out on them.

9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the LORD was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.

9 After they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against the city of Gath,(I) causing a great panic. He afflicted the men of the city, from the youngest to the oldest, with an outbreak of tumors.(J)

9 After they moved it, the LORD moved against the town, causing a very great panic. He struck the men of the town, from young to old with tumors of the groin.

9 But it happened that after they had taken it to Gath, the hand of the Lord was against the city, causing an extremely great panic [because of the deaths from the plague], for He struck the people of the city, both young and old, and tumors broke out on them.

10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And as the ark of God came to Ekron the Ekronites cried out, saying, “They have brought the ark of the God of Israel around to (b)us, to kill (c)us and (d)our people.”

10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.

10 The Gittites then sent the ark of God to Ekron, but when it got there, the Ekronites cried out, “They’ve moved the ark of Israel’s God to us to kill us and our people!”(f)

10 Then they sent the Ark of God to Ekron. When the Ark of God arrived in Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, "They have brought the Ark of the God of Israel to us to kill us and our people!"

10 So they sent the ark of God to (d)Ekron. And as the ark of God came to Ekron, the Ekronites cried out, “They have brought the ark of the God of Israel [from Gath] to (e)us, to kill us and (f)our people.”

11 They (N)sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, so that it will not kill (e)us and (f)our people.” For there was a deadly confusion throughout the city; (O)the hand of God was very heavy there.

11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

11 The Ekronites called all the Philistine rulers together.(K) They said, “Send the ark of Israel’s God away. It must return to its place so it won’t kill us and our people!”(g) For the fear of death pervaded the city; God’s hand was oppressing them.(L)

11 They sent messengers and gathered together all the Philistine lords: "Send away the Ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to where it belongs so that it does not kill us and our people." Meanwhile, a deadly panic had spread all over the town, and God kept on pressuring them there.

11 So they sent word and gathered all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel; let it be returned to its own place, so that it will not kill us and our people.” For there was a deadly panic throughout the city; the hand of God was very heavy (severe) there.

12 And the men who did not die were smitten with tumors and (P)the cry of the city went up to heaven.

12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

12 The men who did not die were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.(M)

12 The people who did not die were afflicted with tumors of the groin, and the cry of the town went up to heaven.

12 The men who had not died were stricken with tumors and the cry of the city [for help] went up to heaven.
