Growth In The Faith
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
3 seeing that His (H)divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true (I)knowledge of Him who (J)called us (d)by His own glory and (e)excellence.
3 His(c) divine power(F) has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge(G) of Him who called(H) us by(d) His own glory and goodness.
3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the full knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence.
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
4 (f)For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent (K)promises, so that by them you may become (L)partakers of the divine nature, having (M)escaped the (N)corruption that is in (O)the world by lust.
4 By these He has given us very great and precious promises,(I) so that through them you may share in the divine nature,(J) escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires.
4 Through these he has given us his precious and wonderful promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, seeing that you have escaped the corruption that is in the world caused by evil desires.
4 For by these He has bestowed on us His precious and magnificent promises [of inexpressible value], so that by them you may escape from the immoral freedom that is in the world because of disreputable desire, and become sharers of the divine nature.
5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith (P)supply (Q)moral (g)excellence, and in your moral excellence, (R)knowledge,
5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge,
5 For this very reason, you must make every effort to supplement your faith with moral character, your moral character with knowledge,
6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
6 and in your knowledge, (S)self-control, and in your self-control, (T)perseverance, and in your perseverance, (U)godliness,
6 your knowledge with self-control, your self-control with endurance, your endurance with godliness,
6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, steadfastness, and in your steadfastness, godliness,
7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
7 your godliness with brotherly kindness, and your brotherly kindness with love.
7 and in your godliness, brotherly affection, and in your brotherly affection, [develop Christian] love [that is, learn to unselfishly seek the best for others and to do things for their benefit].
Make Your Calling And Election Secure
8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor (W)unfruitful in the true (X)knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they will keep you from being useless(M) or unfruitful(N) in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
8 For if you possess these qualities, and if they continue to increase among you, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in attaining a full knowledge of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah.
8 For as these qualities are yours and are increasing [in you as you grow toward spiritual maturity], they will keep you from being useless and unproductive in regard to the true knowledge and greater understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
9 For he who lacks these qualities is (Y)blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his (Z)purification from his former sins.
9 The person who lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten the cleansing from his past sins.
9 For the person who lacks these qualities is blind and shortsighted, and has forgotten the cleansing that he has received from his past sins.
9 For whoever lacks these qualities is blind—shortsighted [closing his spiritual eyes to the truth], having become oblivious to the fact that he was cleansed from his old sins.
10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His (AA)calling and (AB)choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never (AC)stumble;
10 Therefore, brothers, make every effort to confirm your calling and election,(O) because if you do these things you will never stumble.
10 So then, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election certain, for if you keep on doing this you will never fail.
10 Therefore, believers, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you [be sure that your behavior reflects and confirms your relationship with God]; for by (f)doing these things [actively developing these virtues], you will never stumble [in your spiritual growth and will live a life that leads others away from sin];
11 For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
11 for in this way the entrance into (AD)the eternal kingdom of our (AE)Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be (AF)abundantly (AG)supplied to you.
11 For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom(P) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly supplied to you.
11 For in this way you will be generously granted entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus, the Messiah.
11 for in this way entry into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly provided to you.
Salvation Based On The Word Of God
12 Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
12 Therefore, (AH)I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in (AI)the truth which is present with you.
12 Therefore I will always remind you about these things, even though you know them and are established in the truth(Q) you have.
12 Therefore, I intend to keep on reminding you about these things, even though you already know them and are firmly established in the truth that you now have.
13 Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
13 I consider it (AJ)right, as long as I am in (AK)this earthly dwelling, to (AL)stir you up by way of reminder,
13 Yet I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I am living in this bodily tent,
13 I think it right, as long as I am in this earthly tent, to inspire you by reminding you,
14 Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
14 knowing that (AM)the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, (AN)as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
14 because I know that the removal of my bodily tent will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, has shown me.
14 knowing that the laying aside of this earthly tent of mine is imminent, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
15 Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
15 And I will also be diligent that at any time after my (AO)departure you will be able to call these things to mind.
15 And I will also make every effort that you may be able to recall these things at any time after my departure.(f)
15 And I will make every effort to see that you will always remember these things after I am gone.
15 Moreover, I will diligently endeavor [to see to it] that even after my departure you will be able, at all times, to call these things to mind.
The Reliable Prophetic Word Of Testimony
16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised (AP)tales when we made known to you the (AQ)power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were (AR)eyewitnesses of His majesty.
16 For we did not follow cleverly contrived myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ;(T) instead, we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.(U)
16 When we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, we did not follow any clever myths. Rather, we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an (h)(AS)utterance as this was (i)made to Him by the (AT)Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”—
17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, a voice came to Him from the Majestic Glory:This is My beloved Son.(g)I take delight in Him!(h)(V)
17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when these words from the Majestic Glory were spoken about him: "This is my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with him."
17 For when He was invested with honor and [the radiance of the (i)Shekinah] glory from God the Father, such a voice as this came to Him from the [splendid] Majestic Glory [in the bright cloud that overshadowed Him, saying], (j)“This is My Son, My Beloved Son in whom I am well-pleased and delighted”—(A)
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
19 (k)So we have (AV)the prophetic word made more (AW)sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to (AX)a lamp shining in a dark place, until the (AY)day dawns and the (AZ)morning star arises (BA)in your hearts.
19 So we have the prophetic word strongly confirmed. You will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dismal place,(X) until the day dawns(Y) and the morning star(Z) rises in your hearts.
19 Therefore we regard the message of the prophets as confirmed beyond doubt, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp that is shining in a gloomy place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
20 But (BB)know this first of all, that (BC)no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation,
20 First of all, you should know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation,
20 First of all, you must understand this: No prophecy in Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation,
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
21 for (BD)no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men (BE)moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
21 because no prophecy ever came by the will of man;(AA) instead, men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.(AB)
21 because no prophecy ever originated through a human decision. Instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
