2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.(B)Now there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.

2 and reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah(b)(B) daughter of Uriel; she was from Gibeah.There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.
2 Then Abijah died, as had his ancestors, and he was buried in the City of David. Abijah's son Asa reigned in his place, and during his lifetime the land enjoyed rest for ten years.
2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah.And there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam [of Israel].
3 Abijah began the battle with an army of valiant warriors, 400,000 chosen men, while Jeroboam drew up in battle formation against him with 800,000 chosen men who were valiant warriors.
3 And Abijah set the battle in array with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: Jeroboam also set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, being mighty men of valour.
3 Abijah set his army of warriors in order with 400,000 choice men. Jeroboam arranged his mighty army of 800,000 choice men in battle formation against him.
3 He reigned for three years in Jerusalem. His mother was Uriel's daughter Micaiah from Gibeah.
3 Abijah began the battle with an army of brave soldiers, 400,000 chosen men. Jeroboam drew up in battle formation against him with 800,000 chosen men, valiant men.
4 Then Abijah stood on Mount (C)Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel:
4 And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim, which is in mount Ephraim, and said, Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel;
4 Then Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim,(C) which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Jeroboam and all Israel, hear me.
4 A war started between Abijah and Jeroboam. Abijah started the battle with an army of 400,000 specially chosen valiant soldiers, but Jeroboam opposed him with 800,000 specially chosen valiant soldiers.
4 Then Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, “Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel:
5 Do you not know that (D)the Lord God of Israel gave the rule over Israel forever to David (a)and his sons by (E)a covenant of salt?
5 Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?
5 Don’t you know that the Lord God of Israel gave the kingship over Israel to David and his descendants forever(D) by a covenant of salt?(E)
5 Abijah stood on Mount Zemaraim in the hill country of Ephraim and announced:
6 Yet (F)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his (b)master,
6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, is risen up, and hath rebelled against his lord.
6 But Jeroboam son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord.(F)
6 "Listen to me, Jeroboam and Israel! Don't you know that the LORD God of Israel assigned the kingship over Israel to David and his descendants forever by a salt covenant?
6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat, a servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his lord [the king],
7 and worthless men gathered about him, scoundrels, who proved too strong for Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, when (c)(G)he was young and timid and could not hold his own against them.
7 And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.
7 Then worthless and wicked men gathered around him to resist Rehoboam son of Solomon when Rehoboam was young, inexperienced, and unable to assert himself against them.
7 Even so, Nebat's son Jeroboam, who used to serve David's son Solomon, rose in rebellion against his own master!
7 and worthless (unprincipled, unethical) men gathered around him, useless and wicked men, who proved too strong for Rehoboam the son of Solomon when Rehoboam was young and timid, and could not assert himself against them.
8 “So now you intend to resist the kingdom of the Lord (d)through the sons of David, (e)being a great multitude and having with you (H)the golden calves which Jeroboam made for gods for you.
8 And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David; and ye be a great multitude, and there are with you golden calves, which Jeroboam made you for gods.
8 “And now you are saying you can assert yourselves against the Lord’s kingdom, which is in the hand of one of David’s sons. You are a vast number and have with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods.(c)(G)
8 Useless troublemakers soon gathered around him, who turned out to be too strong for Rehoboam, because he was young, timid, and unable to withstand them.
8 “And now you intend to assert yourselves against the kingdom of the Lord which is in the hands of the sons of David, since you are a great multitude and have with you the golden calves (idols) which Jeroboam made for you as gods.
9 (I)Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes (J)to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams, even he may become a priest of what are (K)no gods.
9 Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron, and the Levites, and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands? so that whosoever cometh to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams, the same may be a priest of them that are no gods.
9 Didn’t you banish the priests of Yahweh, the descendants of Aaron and the Levites, and make your own priests like the peoples of other lands do?(H) Whoever comes to ordain himself(I) with a young bull and seven rams may become a priest(J) of what are not gods.(K)
9 "So now you think you'll be able to withstand the LORD's kingdom as controlled by David's descendants, just because you have a large crown and have brought with you the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods.
9 Have you not driven out the priests of the Lord, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, and made priests for yourselves like the peoples of other lands? So whoever comes to consecrate himself with a young bull and seven rams, even he may become a priest of non-existent gods (idols).
10 But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not forsaken Him; and the sons of Aaron are ministering to the Lord as priests, and the Levites (f)attend to their work.
10 But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not forsaken him; and the priests, which minister unto the LORD, are the sons of Aaron, and the Levites wait upon their business:
10 “But as for us, Yahweh is our God. We have not abandoned Him; the priests ministering to the Lord are descendants of Aaron, and the Levites serve at their tasks.
10 Haven't you already driven away the LORD's priests, the descendants of Aaron and the descendants of Levi? Haven't you established your own priests like the people of other lands?
10 But as for us, the Lord is our God, and we have not abandoned (turned away from) Him. The sons of Aaron are ministering to the Lord as priests, and the Levites attend to their service.
11 Every morning and evening (L)they (g)burn to the Lord burnt offerings and fragrant incense, and (M)the showbread is set on the clean table, and the golden lampstand with its lamps is ready to light every evening; for we keep the charge of the Lord our God, but you have forsaken Him.
11 And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have forsaken him.
11 They offer a burnt offering and fragrant incense to the Lord every morning and every evening,(L) and they set the rows of the bread of the Presence on the ceremonially clean table.(M) They light the lamps of the gold lampstand every evening. We are carrying out the requirements of Yahweh our God, while you have abandoned Him.(N)
11 "Now as far as we're concerned, the LORD is our God, and we haven't abandoned him. The descendants of Aaron are ministering to the LORD as priests, and the descendants of Levi continue their work.
11 Every morning and every evening they offer the burnt offerings and the fragrant incense to the Lord; and the (b)showbread is set on the clean table [of pure gold], and the golden lampstand with its lamps is ready to light every evening; for we keep the charge of the Lord our God [that is, the obligation we have to Him], but you have abandoned (turned away from) Him.
12 Now behold, God is with us at our head and (N)His priests with the signal trumpets to sound the alarm against you. O sons of Israel, do not fight against the Lord God of your fathers, for you will not succeed.”
12 And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.
12 Look, God and His priests are with us at our head. The trumpets are ready to sound the charge against you. Israelites, don’t fight against the Lord God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.”(O)
12 Every morning and evening, they're offering burnt offerings and fragrant incense to the LORD, the showbread is set out on the pure table, and they take care of the golden lamp stand so its lamps can continue to burn every evening. We continue to be faithful over what the LORD our God entrusted to us, but you have abandoned him.
12 Behold, God is with us at our head, and His priests [are here] with their signal trumpets to sound an alarm against you. O sons of Israel, do not fight against the Lord God of your fathers, for you cannot succeed.”
13 But Jeroboam (O)had set an ambush to come from the rear, so that Israel was in front of Judah and the ambush was behind them.
13 But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behind them: so they were before Judah, and the ambushment was behind them.
13 Now Jeroboam had sent an ambush(P) around to advance from behind them. So they were in front of Judah, and the ambush was behind them.
13 Now listen! God is with us to lead us, and his priests are about to sound their battle trumpets against you. Descendants of Israel, don't fight against the LORD God of your ancestors, because you won't succeed!"
13 But Jeroboam had set an ambush to come from the rear, so that Israel was in front of Judah and the ambush was behind them.
14 When Judah turned around, behold, (h)they were attacked both front and rear; so (P)they cried to the Lord, and the priests blew the trumpets.
14 And when Judah looked back, behold, the battle was before and behind: and they cried unto the LORD, and the priests sounded with the trumpets.
14 Judah turned and discovered that the battle was in front of them and behind them, so they cried out to the Lord.(Q) Then the priests blew the trumpets,
14 But Jeroboam had sent an ambush to attack from the rear, so Israel was in front of Judah, with the ambush set in place behind them.
14 When [the men of] Judah turned around, they were attacked from both front and rear; so they cried out to the Lord [for help], and the priests blew the trumpets.
15 Then the men of Judah raised a war cry, and when the men of Judah raised the war cry, then it was that God (i)(Q)routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout: and as the men of Judah shouted, it came to pass, that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.
15 and the men of Judah raised the battle cry. When the men of Judah raised the battle cry, God routed Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.(R)
15 When the army of Judah turned around to look, they were being attacked from both front and rear, so they cried out to the LORD while the priests sounded their trumpets.
15 Then the men of Judah raised a war cry; and as they shouted, God struck Jeroboam and all Israel [with defeat] before Abijah and Judah.
17 Abijah and his people defeated them with a great slaughter, so that 500,000 chosen men of Israel fell slain.
17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.
17 Then Abijah and his people struck them with a mighty blow, and 500,000 choice men of Israel were killed.
17 Then the army of Judah sounded a war cry, and God routed Jeroboam and the entire army of Israel in front of Abijah and Judah.
17 Abijah and his people inflicted on them a great defeat, so that 500,000 chosen men of Israel fell slain.
18 Thus the sons of Israel were subdued at that time, and the sons of Judah (j)conquered (S)because they trusted in the Lord, the God of their fathers.
18 Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time, and the children of Judah prevailed, because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers.
18 The Israelites were subdued at that time. The Judahites succeeded because they depended on the Lord, the God of their ancestors.
18 When the descendants of Israel ran away from the army of Judah, God handed them over to the army of Judah.
18 Thus the sons of Israel were subdued (humbled) at that time, and the sons of Judah prevailed because they relied on the Lord, the God of their fathers.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured from him several cities, Bethel with its villages, Jeshanah with its villages and (k)Ephron with its villages.
19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam, and took cities from him, Bethel with the towns thereof, and Jeshanah with the towns thereof, and Ephrain with the towns thereof.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured some cities from him: Bethel and its villages, Jeshanah and its villages, and Ephron(d) and its villages.
19 Abijah and his army defeated them in a tremendous slaughter that resulted in 500,000 special forces from Israel being slain.
19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured [several] cities from him: Bethel, Jeshanah, and Ephraim (Ephron), with their villages.
20 Jeroboam did not again recover strength in the days of Abijah; and the (T)Lord struck him and (U)he died.
20 Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.
20 Jeroboam no longer retained his power(e) during Abijah’s reign; ultimately, the Lord struck him(T) and he died.(U)
20 And so the descendants of Israel were defeated at that time. The descendants of Judah were victorious because they trusted in the LORD God of their ancestors.
20 Jeroboam did not recover strength again during the time of [the reign of] Abijah. And the Lord struck him and he died.
21 But Abijah became powerful; and took fourteen wives to himself, and became the father of twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
21 But Abijah waxed mighty, and married fourteen wives, and begat twenty and two sons, and sixteen daughters.
21 However, Abijah grew strong, acquired 14 wives, and fathered 22 sons and 16 daughters.
21 After this Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured Bethel and its villages, Jeshanah and its villages, and Ephron and its villages.
21 But Abijah became powerful. He took fourteen wives for himself and fathered twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.
22 Now the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways and his words are written in (V)the (l)treatise of (W)the prophet Iddo.
22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.

22 Jeroboam never recovered his strength for the rest of Abijah's life. The LORD struck Jeroboam, and he died,
