1 And I determined this to myself, not to come to you again in sadness.
1 But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness.
1 Now I decided not to pay you another painful visit.
2 For if I grieve you, and who is he making me glad, except he being grieved by me
2 For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me?
2 After all, if I were to grieve you, who should make me happy but the person I am making sad?
3 And I wrote this same to you lest, coming, I should have sadness from whom I ought to rejoice, trusting to you all, that mine is the joy of you all.
3 This is the very thing I (C)wrote you, so that (D)when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having (E)confidence in you all that my joy would be the joy of you all.
3 And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.
3 This is the very reason I wrote you, so that when I did come I might not be made sad by those who should have made me happy. For I had confidence that all of you would share the joy that I have.
4 For out of much pressure and anxiety of heart I wrote to you through many tears; not that ye should be 'grieved, but that ye might know the love I have more abundantly towards you.
4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
4 For I wrote to you with many tears out of an extremely troubled and anguished heart—not that you should be hurt, but that you should know the abundant love I have for you.
4 I wrote to you out of great sorrow and anguish of heart along with many tears not to make you sad but to let you know how much love I have for you.
5 And if any have grieved, he has not grieved me, but by part; that I might not overload you all.
5 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all.
5 But if anyone has caused grief, he didn't cause me any grief. To some extent I don't want to emphasize this too much it has affected all of you.
6 Sufficient to such a one this enjoyment of the esteem of the many.
6 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many.
6 The punishment inflicted by the majority is sufficient for that person.
6 This punishment by the majority is severe enough for such a man.
7 So that on the contrary ye should rather show kindness, and console, lest perhaps such be swallowed down with more abundant sadness.
7 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow.
7 So forgive and comfort him, or else he will drown in his excessive grief.
9 For, for this I also wrote, that I might know the proof of you, if ye are obedient for all things.
9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things.
9 I had also written to you to see if you would stand the test and be obedient in every way.
10 And to whom ye show any favor; I also: for also if I have shown any kindness, to whom I have shown kindness, through you in the face of Christ;
10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;
10 If you forgive anyone, I do too. For what I have forgiven—if I have forgiven anything—it is for you in the presence of Christ.
10 When you forgive someone, I do, too. Indeed, what I have forgiven if there was anything to forgive I did in the presence of the Messiah for your benefit,
11 That we might not be taken advantage of by Satan: for we are not ignorant of his inventions.
11 Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
11 so that we may not be outsmarted by Satan. After all, we are not unaware of his intentions.
12 And coming to Troas for the good news of Christ, and a door having been opened to me in the Lord,
12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord,
12 When I went to Troas on behalf of the gospel of the Messiah, the Lord opened a door for me,
13 I have had no relaxation to my spirit, in my not finding Titus my brother: but having taken leave of them, I went out to Macedonia.
13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia.
13 but my spirit could not find any relief, because I couldn't find Titus, my brother. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.
14 Grace to God, always leading us to triumph in Christ, and making manifest the order of his knowledge by us in every place.
14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
14 But thanks be to God! He always leads us triumphantly by the Messiah and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of knowing him.
15 For we are to God a sweet odor of Christ, in the saved, and in the host:
15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
15 To God we are the aroma of the Messiah among those who are being saved and among those who are being lost.
16 Truly to those an odor of death into death; and to those an odor of life into life. And who sufficient for these things?
16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
16 To some people we are a deadly fragrance, while to others we are a living fragrance. Who is qualified for this?
17 For we are not as the many adulterating the word of God: but as of purity, but as of God, before the face of God speak we in Christ.
17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
17 At least we are not commercializing God's word like so many others. Instead, we speak with sincerity in the Messiah's name, like people who are sent from God and are accountable to God.
