Cornelius Has A Vision

1 Now at Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a colonel in what was known as the Italian regiment,

1 Now there was a man at (A)Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was (B)called the Italian (a)cohort,

1 There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,

1 There was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment.(A)

1 Now in Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.

2 a religious man, too, who revered God with all his household, who was always liberal in his many deeds of charity to the people, and who had the habit of praying to God.

2 a devout man and (C)one who feared God with all his household, and (D)gave many (b)alms to the Jewish people and prayed to God continually.

2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.

2 He was a devout man and feared God along with his whole household. He did many charitable deeds for the Jewish people and always prayed to God.(B)

2 He was a devout man who feared God, as did everyone in his home. He gave many gifts to the poor among the people and always prayed to God.

3 One afternoon about three o'clock he had a vision and clearly saw an angel of God come to him and say, "Cornelius!"

3 About (E)the (c)ninth hour of the day he clearly saw (F)in a vision (G)an angel of God who had just come in and said to him, “Cornelius!”

3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

3 About three in the afternoon(a) he distinctly saw in a vision an angel of God who came in and said to him, “Cornelius!”(C)

3 One day, about three in the afternoon, he had a vision and clearly saw an angel of God coming to him and saying to him, "Cornelius!"

4 He stared at him and in terror asked, "What is it, sir?" The angel answered him, "Your prayers and your deeds of charity have gone up and been remembered before God.

4 And (H)fixing his gaze on him and being much alarmed, he said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and (d)alms (I)have ascended (J)as a memorial before God.

4 And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.

4 Looking intently at him, he became afraid and said, “What is it, lord?”The angel told him, “Your prayers and your acts of charity have come up as a memorial offering before God.(D)

4 He stared at the angel in terror and asked, "What is it, Lord?"

5 So now send men to Joppa and invite over a man named Simon, who is also called Peter.

5 Now dispatch some men to (K)Joppa and send for a man named Simon, who is also called Peter;

5 And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:

5 Now send men to Joppa and call for Simon, who is also named Peter.

5 The angel answered him, "Your prayers and your gifts to the poor have arisen as a reminder to God. Send men now to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter.

6 He is a guest of a tanner named Simon, whose house is close by the sea."

6 he is staying with a tanner named (L)Simon, whose house is by the sea.”

6 He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.

6 He is lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”(E)

6 He is a guest of Simon, a leatherworker, whose house is by the sea."

7 After the angel who had spoken to him had gone, Cornelius called two of his household servants, and a religious soldier who was one of his devoted attendants,

7 When the angel who was speaking to him had left, he summoned two of his (e)servants and a devout soldier of those who were his personal attendants,

7 And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;

7 When the angel who spoke to him had gone, he called two of his household slaves and a devout soldier, who was one of those who attended him.

7 When the angel who had spoken to him had gone, Cornelius summoned two of his household servants and a devout soldier, one of those who served him regularly.

8 and after telling them the whole story, sent them to Joppa.

8 and after he had explained everything to them, he sent them to (M)Joppa.

8 And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.

8 After explaining everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

8 He explained everything to them and sent them to Joppa.

Peter Has A Vision

9 The next day, while those men were traveling on and not far from the town, Peter went up on the housetop about noon to pray.

9 On the next day, as they were on their way and approaching the city, (N)Peter went up on (O)the housetop about (P)the (f)sixth hour to pray.

9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:

9 The(F) next day, as they were traveling and nearing the city, Peter went up to pray on the housetop(G) about noon.(b)

9 Around noon the next day, while they were on their way and coming close to the town, Peter went up on the roof to pray.

10 But he got very hungry and wanted something to eat. While they were getting it ready, he fell into a trance

10 But he became hungry and was desiring to eat; but while they were making preparations, he (Q)fell into a trance;

10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,

10 Then he became hungry and wanted to eat, but while they were preparing something, he went into a visionary state.

10 He became very hungry and wanted to eat, and while the food was being prepared, he fell into a trance

11 and saw the sky opened, and something like a great sheet coming down, lowered to the earth by the four corners,

11 and he *saw (R)the (g)sky opened up, and an (h)object like a great sheet coming down, lowered by four corners to the ground,

11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

11 He saw heaven opened(H) and an object that resembled a large sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the earth.

11 and saw heaven open and something like a large linen sheet coming down, being lowered by its four corners to the ground.

12 which contained all kinds of four-footed animals, reptiles, and wild birds.

12 and there were in it all kinds of four-footed animals and (i)crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the (j)air.

12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

12 In it were all the four-footed animals and reptiles of the earth, and the birds of the sky.

12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals, reptiles, and birds of the air.

13 A voice came to him, "Get up, Peter, kill something and eat it."

13 A voice came to him, “Get up, Peter, (k)kill and eat!”

13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.

13 Then a voice said to him, “Get up, Peter; kill and eat!”

13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter! Kill something and eat it."

14 But Peter said, "Never by any means, sir, for I have never eaten anything common, or not ceremonially cleansed."

14 But Peter said, “By no means, (S)Lord, for (T)I have never eaten anything (l)unholy and unclean.”

14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.

14 “No, Lord!” Peter said. “For I have never eaten anything common(c) and ritually unclean!”(I)

14 But Peter said, "Absolutely not, Lord, for I have never eaten anything that is common or unclean!"

15 A second time the voice came to him, "The things that God has cleansed you must not call unclean."

15 Again a voice came to him a second time, “(U)What God has cleansed, no longer consider (m)unholy.”

15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

15 Again, a second time, a voice said to him, “What God has made clean, you must not call common.”(J)

15 Again the voice came to him a second time, "You must stop calling unclean what God has made clean."

16 This took place three times; then all at once the thing was taken up into the sky.

16 This happened three times, and immediately the (n)object was taken up into the (o)sky.

16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

16 This happened three times, and then the object was taken up into heaven.

16 This happened three times. Then the sheet was quickly taken back into heaven.

17 Now while Peter was still at a loss to know what the vision he had seen could mean, the men who had been sent by Cornelius had asked for the way to Simon's house and had stopped at the gate;

17 Now while Peter was greatly perplexed in (p)mind as to what (V)the vision which he had seen might be, behold, (W)the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions for Simon’s house, appeared at the gate;

17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,

17 While Peter was deeply perplexed about what the vision he had seen might mean, the men who had been sent by Cornelius, having asked directions to Simon’s house, stood at the gate.

17 While Peter was still at a loss to know what the vision he had seen could mean, the men sent by Cornelius asked for Simon's house and went to the gate.

18 and they called and inquired if Simon who was called Peter was staying there.

18 and calling out, they were asking whether Simon, who was also called Peter, was staying there.

18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.

18 They called out, asking if Simon, who was also named Peter, was lodging there.

18 They called out and asked if Simon who was called Peter was staying there.

19 While Peter was meditating on the vision, the Spirit said to him, "There are two men looking for you.

19 While Peter was reflecting on (X)the vision, (Y)the Spirit said to him, “Behold, (q)three men are looking for you.

19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.

19 While Peter was thinking about the vision, the Spirit told him, “Three men are here looking for you.(K)

19 Peter was still thinking about the vision when the Spirit told him, "Look! Three men are looking for you.

20 Get up and go down, and without hesitation go on with them, for I have sent them."

20 But get up, go downstairs and (Z)accompany them (r)without misgivings, for I have sent them Myself.”

20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.

20 Get up, go downstairs, and accompany them with no doubts at all, because I have sent them.”(L)

20 Get up, go downstairs, and don't hesitate to go with them, for I have sent them."

21 So Peter went down and said to the men, "I am the man you are looking for. What is the purpose of your coming?"

21 Peter went down to the men and said, “Behold, I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for which you have come?”

21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?

21 Then Peter went down to the men and said, “Here I am, the one you’re looking for. What is the reason you’re here?”

21 So Peter went to the men and said, "I'm the man you're looking for. Why are you here?"

22 They answered, "Cornelius, a colonel in the army, an upright man and one who reveres God, and a man of high reputation with the whole Jewish nation, was instructed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house and to listen to a message you would bring."

22 They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and (AA)God-fearing man well spoken of by the entire nation of the Jews, (AB)was divinely directed by a (AC)holy angel to send for you to come to his house and hear (s)(AD)a message from you.”

22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

22 They said, “Cornelius, a centurion, an upright and God-fearing man, who has a good reputation with the whole Jewish nation, was divinely directed by a holy angel to call you to his house and to hear a message from you.”(M)

22 The men replied, "Cornelius, a centurion and an upright and God-fearing man who is respected by the whole Jewish nation, was instructed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his home to hear what you have to say."

23 So Peter invited them in and entertained them.

23 So he invited them in and gave them lodging. And on the next day he got up and went away with them, and (AE)some of (AF)the brethren from (AG)Joppa accompanied him.

23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

23 Peter then invited them in and gave them lodging. The next day he got up and set out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went with him.(N)

23 So Peter welcomed them as his guests. The next day, he got up and went with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa went along with him.

Peter Speaks With Cornelius

24 The next day he started off with them, and some of the brothers in Joppa went along with him. The day after that they reached Caesarea. Cornelius was waiting for him, as he had invited in his kinsmen and close friends.

24 On the following day he entered (AH)Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends.

24 And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.

24 The following day he entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends.

24 The next day, they arrived in Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called his relatives and close friends together.

Peter Visits Cornelius

25 When Peter went into the house, Cornelius met him and fell at his feet and did homage to him.

25 When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, and fell at his feet and (t)(AI)worshiped him.

25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

25 When Peter entered, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him.

25 When Peter was about to enter, Cornelius met him, bowed down at his feet, and began to worship him.

26 But Peter lifted him to his feet, saying, "Get up, I too am just a man myself."

26 But Peter raised him up, saying, “(AJ)Stand up; I too am just a man.”

26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

26 But Peter helped him up and said, “Stand up! I myself am also a man.”(O)

26 But Peter made him get up, saying, "Stand up! I, too, am only a man."

27 As he continued to talk with him he went into the house and found a great crowd had gathered,

27 As he talked with him, he entered and *found (AK)many people assembled.

27 And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.

27 While talking with him, he went on in and found that many had come together there.

27 As Peter talked with him, he went in and found that many people had gathered.

28 and he said to him, "You know that it is against the law for a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit one, but God has taught me not to call any man vulgar or ceremonially unclean;

28 And he said to them, “You yourselves know how (AL)unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet (AM)God has shown me that I should not call any man (u)unholy or unclean.

28 And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

28 Peter said to them, “You know it’s forbidden for a Jewish man to associate with or visit a foreigner.(P) But God has shown me that I must not call any person common or unclean.(Q)

28 He told them, "You understand how wrong it is for a Jew to associate or visit with unbelievers. But God has shown me that I should stop calling anyone common or unclean,

29 so I have come, since I was sent for, without any hesitation."

29 That is why I came without even raising any objection when I was sent for. So I ask for what reason you have sent for me.”

29 Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?

29 That’s why I came without any objection when I was sent for. So I ask: Why did you send for me?”

29 and that is why I didn't hesitate when I was sent for. Now may I ask why you sent for me?"

30 Then Cornelius said, "Four days ago, about this hour, three o'clock in the afternoon, I was praying in my house, and all at once a man in dazzling clothing stood before me,

30 Cornelius said, “(AN)Four days ago to this hour, I was praying in my house during (AO)the (v)ninth hour; and behold, (AP)a man stood before me in shining garments,

30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,

30 Cornelius replied, “Four days ago at this hour, at three in the afternoon,(d) I was(e) praying in my house. Just then a man in a dazzling robe stood before me(R)

30 Cornelius replied, "Four days ago at this very hour, three o'clock in the afternoon, I was praying in my home. All at once a man in radiant clothes stood in front of me

31 and said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your deeds of charity have been remembered by God.

31 and he *said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your (w)alms have been remembered before God.

31 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.

31 and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard, and your acts of charity have been remembered in God’s sight.

31 and said, "Cornelius, your prayer has been heard. God has remembered your gifts to the poor,

32 So send to Joppa and invite Simon, who is called Peter, to come over. He is being entertained at the house of a tanner named Simon, by the seashore.'

32 Therefore send to (AQ)Joppa and invite Simon, who is also called Peter, to come to you; he is staying at the house of Simon the tanner by the sea.’

32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.

32 Therefore send someone to Joppa and invite Simon here, who is also named Peter. He is lodging in Simon the tanner’s house by the sea.’(f)

32 so send messengers to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter, to come to you. He is a guest in the home of Simon, a leatherworker, by the sea.'

33 So at once I sent for you, and you have been kind enough to come. So now we are all here in God's presence to listen to anything that the Lord has commanded you to say."

33 So I sent for you immediately, and you have (x)been kind enough to come. Now then, we are all here present before God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.”

33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.

33 Therefore I immediately sent for you, and you did the right thing in coming. So we are all present before God, to hear everything you have been commanded by the Lord.”

33 So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. All of us are here now in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has ordered you to say."

34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said, "Now I really see that God shows no partiality,

34 Then Peter began to speak: "Now I understand that God shows no partiality.

The Holy Spirit Given To Gentiles

44 While Peter was still speaking these truths, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the message.

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, (BO)the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the (ag)message.

44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came down(AB) on all those who heard the message.

44 While Peter was still making this statement, the Holy Spirit fell on all the people who were listening to his message.

45 Then the Jewish believers who had gone along with Peter were astounded because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been showered upon the heathen too,

45 (BP)All the (ah)circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been (BQ)poured out on the Gentiles also.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

45 The circumcised believers(h) who had come with Peter were astounded because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also.(AC)

45 Then the circumcised believers who had come with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the gentiles, too,

46 for they heard them speaking in foreign languages and telling of the greatness of God. Then Peter asked,

46 For they were hearing them (BR)speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

46 For they heard them speaking in other languages and declaring the greatness of(i) God.Then Peter responded,

46 because they heard them speaking in foreign languages and praising God. Then Peter said,

47 "No one can refuse the use of water, can he, for these to be baptized, since they have received the Holy Spirit just as we did ourselves?"

47 (BS)Surely no one can refuse the water for these to be baptized who (BT)have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”

47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

47 “Can anyone withhold water and prevent these people from being baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”(AD)

47 "No one can stop us from using water to baptize these people who have received the Holy Spirit in the same way that we did, can they?"

48 So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they begged him to stay on there a few days.

48 And he (BU)ordered them to be baptized (BV)in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.(AE) Then they asked him to stay for a few days.

48 So Peter ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus the Messiah. Then they asked him to stay there for several days.
