1 The high priest said, "Are these things so?"

1 The high priest said, “Are these things so?”

1 Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

1 “Is this true?”(a) the high priest asked.

1 Then the high priest asked, "Is this true?"

2 He said, "Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,

2 And he said, “Hear me, (A)brethren and fathers! (B)The God of glory (C)appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in (a)Haran,

2 And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

2 “Brothers and fathers,” he said, “listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he settled in Haran,(A)

2 Stephen replied: "Listen, brothers and fathers!

3 and said to him, 'Get out of your land, and from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.'

3 and said to him, ‘(D)Leave your country and your relatives, and come into the land that I will show you.’

3 And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

3 and said to him:Get out of your countryand away from your relatives, and come to the landthat I will show you.(B)(b)

3 "The glorious God appeared to our ancestor Abraham while he was in Mesopotamia before he settled in Haran. God told him, "Leave your country and your relatives and go to the land I'll show you.'

4 Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land, where you are now living.

4 (E)Then he left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in (b)Haran. (F)From there, after his father died, God had him move to this country in which you are now living.

4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

4 “Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. From there, after his father died, God had him move to this land you now live in.(C)

4 So he left the country of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. Then after the death of his father, God had him move to this country where you now live.

5 He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he still had no child.

5 But He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground, and yet, even when he had no child, (G)He promised that He would give it to him as a possession, and to his descendants after him.

5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

5 He didn’t give him an inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground, but He promised to give it to him as a possession, and to his descendants after him,(D) even though he was childless.

5 God gave him no property here, not even a foot of land, yet he promised to give it to him and to his descendants after him as a permanent possession, even though he had no child.

6 God spoke in this way: that his seed would live as foreigners in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.

6 But (H)God spoke to this effect, that his descendants would be aliens in a foreign land, and that they would (c)be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.

6 And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

6 God spoke in this way:His descendants would be strangersin a foreign country, and they would enslaveand oppress them 400 years.

6 "This is what God promised: His descendants would be strangers in a foreign country, and its people would enslave them and oppress them for 400 years.

7 'I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,' said God, 'and after that will they come out, and serve me in this place.'

7 And whatever nation to which they will be in bondage I Myself will judge,’ said God, ‘and (I)after that they will come out and (d)serve Me in this place.’

7 And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this place.

7 I will judge the nationthat they will serve as slaves, God said. After this, they will come outand worship Me in this place.(E)(c)

7 "But I will punish the nation they serve,' said God, "and afterwards they will leave and worship me in this place.'

8 He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat the twelve patriarchs.

8 Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision. After this, he fathered Isaac and circumcised(F) him on the eighth day; Isaac did the same with Jacob, and Jacob with the 12 patriarchs.(G)

19 It was he who took (AC)shrewd advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers so that they would (l)(AD)expose their infants and they would not survive.

19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

19 He dealt deceitfully with our race and oppressed our ancestors by making them leave their infants outside, so they wouldn’t survive.(e)(O)

19 By shrewdly scheming against our people, he oppressed our ancestors and forced them to abandon their infants to the elements, so that they wouldn't live.
