Moab

1 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of (a)Moab and for four (multiplied delinquencies)I will not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it,Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom [Esau’s descendant] into lime [and used it to plaster a Moabite house].

1 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of (A)Moab and for fourI will not (a)revoke its punishment,Because he (B)burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.

1 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:

1 The Lord says:I will not relent from punishing Moab(A)for three crimes, even four, because he burned the bonesof the king of Edom to lime.(B)

1 This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Moab because they cremated the bones of the king of Edom, burning them to lime.

2 “So I will send a fire [of war, conquest, and destruction] upon MoabAnd it shall devour the strongholds of Kerioth; And Moab shall die amid tumult and uproar,With war cries and shouts of alarm and the sound of the trumpet.

2 “So I will send fire upon MoabAnd it will consume the citadels of (C)Kerioth; And Moab will die amid (D)tumult,With (b)war cries and the sound of a trumpet.

2 But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet:

2 Therefore, I will send fire against Moab, and it will consume the citadels of Kerioth.(C)Moab will die with a tumult,(D)with shouting and the sound of the ram’s horn.

2 So I will send down fire upon Moab, and it will devour the fortified citadels of Kerioth. Moab will die in the uproar of battle, with a war cry and with the trumpeting of the ram's horn.

3 “I will also cut off and destroy the ruler from its midstAnd slay all the princes with him,” says the Lord.

3 “I will also cut off the (c)(E)judge from her midstAnd slay all her (F)princes with him,” says the Lord.

3 And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the LORD.

3 I will cut off the judge(E) from the landand kill all its officials(F) with him.The Lord has spoken.

3 I will execute their rulers among them, killing all of their officials as well," says the LORD.

Judgment On Judah

4 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of Judah and for four (multiplied delinquencies)I will not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it,Because they have rejected the law of the Lord [the sum of God’s instruction to His people]And have not kept His commandments; But their lies [and their idols], after which their fathers walked,Caused them to go astray.

4 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of (G)Judah and for fourI will not revoke its punishment,Because they (H)rejected the law of the LordAnd have not kept His statutes;Their (d)(I)lies also have led them astray,Those after which their (J)fathers walked.

4 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:

4 The Lord says:I will not relent from punishing Judah(G)for three crimes, even four, because they have rejected the instruction of the Lord(H)and have not kept His statutes.(I)The lies(J) that their ancestors followed(K)have led them astray.

4 This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Judah and now for a fourth I will not turn away; because they rejected the Law of the LORD and did not keep his statutes. Their own lies made them wander off, following along the same path their ancestors walked.

5 “So I will send a fire [of war, conquest, and destruction by the Babylonians] upon JudahAnd it will devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.”

5 “So I will (K)send fire upon JudahAnd it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem.”

5 But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.

5 Therefore, I will send fire(L) against Judah, and it will consume the citadels of Jerusalem.

5 So I will send down fire upon Judah, and it will devour the fortified citadels of Jerusalem."

Judgment On Israel

6 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of Israel and for four (multiplied delinquencies)I will not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it,Because they sell the righteous and innocent for silverAnd the needy for the price of a pair of sandals.

6 Thus says the Lord,“For three transgressions of (L)Israel and for fourI will not revoke its punishment,Because they (M)sell the righteous for moneyAnd the needy for a pair of sandals.

6 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;

6 The Lord says:I will not relent from punishing Israel(M)for three crimes, even four, because they sell a righteous person for silverand a needy person for a pair of sandals.(N)

6 This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Israel and now for a fourth I will not turn away; because they sold the righteous for money, and the poor for sandals,

7 “These who pant after (long to see) the dust of the earth on the head of the helpless [as sign of their grief and distress]Also turn aside the way of the humble; And a man and his father will go to the same (b)girlSo that My holy name is profaned.

7 “These who (e)pant after the very dust of the earth on the head of the (N)helplessAlso (O)turn aside the way of the humble; And a (P)man and his father (f)resort to the same (g)girlIn order to profane My holy name.

7 That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:

7 They trample the heads of the poor(O)on the dust of the groundand block the path of the needy.(P)A man and his father have sexual relationswith the same girl,(Q)profaning My holy name.(R)

7 moving quickly to rub the face of the needy in the dirt. Corrupting the ways of the humble, a man and his father go to the same woman, deliberately defiling my holy name.

8 “They stretch out beside every [pagan] altar on clothes taken in pledge [to secure a loan, disregarding God’s command],And in the house of their God [in contempt of Him] they frivolously drink the wine [which has been] taken from those who have been fined.(A)

8 “On garments (Q)taken as pledges they stretch out beside (R)every altar,And in the house of their God they (S)drink the wine of those who have been fined.

8 And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.

8 They stretch out beside every altar(S)on garments taken as collateral,(T)and in the house of their God,they drink wine obtained through fines.(U)

8 They lay down beside every altar, on garments pledged as collateral, drinking wine paid for through fines imposed by the temple of their gods.

9 “Yet it was I [not the false gods] who destroyed the Amorite before them,Though his height was like the height of the cedars,And he was as strong as the oaks;I even destroyed his fruit above and his root below.

9 “Yet it was I who destroyed the (T)Amorite before them,(h)Though his (U)height was like the height of cedarsAnd he was strong as the oaks;I even destroyed his (V)fruit above and his root below.

9 Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.

9 Yet I destroyed the Amorite(V) as Israel advanced;his height(W) was like the cedars, and he was as sturdy as the oaks;I destroyed his fruit(X) above and his roots beneath.

9 Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorites in front of them, though their height seemed like a cedar, though their strength seemed like an oak, but whose fruit I destroyed from above and the roots from beneath.

10 “Also it was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt,And I led you forty years through the wildernessThat you might possess the land of the Amorite.

10 “It was I who (W)brought you up from the land of Egypt,And I led you in the wilderness (X)forty years(i)That you might take possession of the land of the (Y)Amorite.

10 Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.

10 And I brought you from the land of Egypt(Y)and led you 40 years in the wilderness(Z)in order to possess the land of the Amorite.(AA)

10 Furthermore, I brought you up from the land of Egypt, leading you in the wilderness for 40 years, to take possession of the land of the Amorites.

11 “Then I raised up some of your sons to be prophets [who gave you My revelation],And some of your young men to be Nazirites (dedicated ones). Is this not true, O you children of Israel?” says the Lord.(B)

11 “Then I (Z)raised up some of your sons to be prophetsAnd some of your young men to be (AA)Nazirites. Is this not so, O sons of Israel?” declares the Lord.

11 And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the LORD.

11 I raised up some of your sons as prophets(AB)and some of your young men as Nazirites.(AC)Is this not the case, Israelites? This is the Lord’s declaration.

11 I also raised up your sons to be prophets, and from your young men I raised up Nazirites. Is this not true, people of Israel?" declares the LORD.

12 “But you gave the Nazirites wine to drink [despite their vows]And commanded the prophets, saying, ‘You shall not prophesy!’

12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine,And you commanded the prophets saying, ‘You (AB)shall not prophesy!’

12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.

12 But you made the Nazirites drink wineand commanded the prophets,“Do not prophesy.”(AD)

12 "But you forced the Nazirites to drink wine, and commanded the prophets, "You are not to prophesy!'

13 “Behold, I am weighted down beneath youAs a cart that is weighted down when it is full of sheaves.

13 “Behold, I am (j)(AC)weighted down beneath youAs a wagon (k)is weighted down when filled with sheaves.

13 Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.

13 Look, I am about to crush(a) you in your place(AE)as a wagon full of sheaves crushes grain.

13 "Oh, how I am burdened down with you, as a wagon is overloaded with harvested grain!

14 “Flight will be lost to the swift [so they will be unable to escape],And the strong shall not strengthen nor maintain his power,Nor shall the mighty man save his own life.

14 (l)(AD)Flight will perish from the swift,And the stalwart will not strengthen his power,Nor the (AE)mighty man save his (m)life.

14 Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:

14 Escape will fail the swift,(AF)the strong one will not prevail by his strength,(AG)and the brave will not save his life.

14 So the swift runner will not escape, the valiant will not fortify his strength, and the mighty warrior will not save his life.

15 “He who handles the bow will not stand his ground,The one who is swift of foot will not escape,Nor will he who rides the horse save his life [from the invading army].

15 “He who (AF)grasps the bow will not stand his ground,The swift of foot will not escape,Nor will he who rides the (AG)horse save his (n)life.

15 Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.

15 The archer will not stand his ground,(AH)the one who is swift of footwill not save himself, and the one riding a horse will not save his life.(AI)

15 The skilled archer will not be able to stand, the swift runner will not survive, and the mounted rider will not preserve his own life.

16 “Even the bravest among the warriors shall flee naked on that day,” says the Lord.

16 “Even the (o)bravest among the warriors will (AH)flee naked in that day,” declares the Lord.

16 And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the LORD.

16 Even the most courageous of the warriorswill flee naked on that day(AJ)this is the Lord’s declaration.

16 Even the bravest of elite troops will run away naked at that time," declares the LORD.
