1 I saw the Lord standing beside the (A)altar, and He said,“Smite the capitals so that the (B)thresholds will shake,And (C)break them on the heads of them all! Then I will (D)slay the rest of them with the sword; They will (E)not have a fugitive who will flee,Or a refugee who will escape.
1 I saw the Lord standing upon the altar: and he said, Smite the lintel of the door, that the posts may shake: and cut them in the head, all of them; and I will slay the last of them with the sword: he that fleeth of them shall not flee away, and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered.
1 I saw the Lord standing beside the altar,(A) and He said:Strike the capitals of the pillars(B)so that the thresholds shake;knock them down on the heads of all the people. Then I will kill the rest of them with the sword.(C)None of those who flee will get away;(D)none of the fugitives will escape.
1 I saw the Lord standing beside the altar as he was saying, "Strike the doorposts so that the thresholds tremble, bringing them down on the heads of all of them. Those who survive I will kill with the sword. Those who flee will not escape. There will be no deliverance for the fugitives.
1 I saw the Lord standing at the altar, and He said, Smite the tops of the pillars until the thresholds tremble, and shatter them on the heads of all of the people; and the remainder of them I will slay with the sword. He who flees of them shall not get away, and he who escapes of them shall not be delivered.
2 Though they dig into hell, thence shall mine hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, thence will I bring them down:
2 "Even if they burrow into Sheol, from there my hand will find them. Even if they ascend to the heavens, from there I will bring them down.
2 Though they dig into Sheol (Hades, the dark abode of the gathered dead), from there shall My hand take them; though they climb up to heaven [the abode of light], from there will I bring them down;
3 “Though they hide on the summit of Carmel,I will (H)search them out and take them from there; And though they (I)conceal themselves from My sight on the floor of the sea,From there I will command the (J)serpent and it will bite them.
3 And though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out thence; and though they be hid from my sight in the bottom of the sea, thence will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:
3 If they hide themselveson the top of Carmel, from there I will track them down(G)and seize them;if they conceal themselvesfrom My sight on the sea floor,(H)from there I will commandthe sea serpent to bite them.(I)
3 Even if they hide at the top of Mount Carmel, from there I will search and seize them. Even if they hide from my sight in the depths of the sea, from there I will order the serpent to strike them.
3 And though they hide themselves on the top of [Mount] Carmel, from there I will search out and take them; and though they [try to] hide from My sight at the bottom of the sea, there I will command the serpent and it shall bite them.
4 And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them for evil, and not for good.
4 Even if they go into exile among their enemies, from there I will order the sword to kill them. I will fix my gaze on them to inflict disaster, and not to do good.
4 And though they go into captivity before their enemies, there will I command the sword and it shall slay them, and I will set My eyes upon them for evil and not for good.
5 And the Lord GOD of hosts is he that toucheth the land, and it shall melt, and all that dwell therein shall mourn: and it shall rise up wholly like a flood; and shall be drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.
5 "The Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies who is touching the earth so that it melts and all of its inhabitants mourn there the land rises like the Nile River, but sinks like the river of Egypt
5 The Lord God of hosts, it is He Who touches the earth and it melts, and all who dwell in it mourn; it shall rise like the [river] Nile, all of it, and it shall sink again like the Nile of Egypt.
6 The One who builds His (b)(O)upper chambers in the heavensAnd has founded His vaulted dome over the earth,He who (P)calls for the waters of the seaAnd (Q)pours them out on the face of the earth,(R)The Lord is His name.
6 It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his troop in the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.
6 He builds His upper chambersin the heavens(O)and lays the foundation of His vaulton the earth.(P)He summons the waters of the seaand pours them out on the face of the earth.(Q)Yahweh is His name.(R)
6 who is building his stairway to heaven and setting its foundation on earth; who is calling for the waters of the sea and pouring them out over the surface of the land the LORD is his name!
6 It is He Who builds His upper chambers in the heavens and Who founds His vault over the earth, Who calls to the waters of the sea and pours them out on the face of the earth -- "The Lord is His name.
7 “Are you not as the sons of (S)Ethiopia to Me,O sons of Israel?” declares the Lord.“Have I not brought up Israel from the land of Egypt,And the (T)Philistines from Caphtor and the (U)Arameans from (V)Kir?
7 Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from Caphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
7 "Aren't you people of Israel like the people of Cush to me?" declares the LORD. "I brought Israel up from the land of Egypt, did I not, as well as the Philistines from Caphtor and the Arameans from Kir?
7 You [O degenerate children of Israel] are no more to Me than these [despised] Cushites, says the Lord. I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt, but have I not [also] brought the Philistines out of Caphtor and the Syrians from Kir?
8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; saving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.
8 Look, the eyes of the Lord Godare on the sinful kingdom,(V)and I will destroy itfrom the face of the earth.(W)However, I will not totally destroythe house of Jacob(X)—this is the Lord’s declaration—
8 Look! The eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom. I will destroy it from the face of the earth; but I will not totally destroy the house of Jacob," declares the LORD.
8 Behold, the eyes of the Lord God are upon the sinful kingdom [of Israel's ten tribes] and I will destroy it from the surface of the ground, except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, says the Lord.
9 For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.
9 "Look! I'm giving the order: I will sift the house of Israel throughout all the nations, as one sifts with a sieve, yet not a single kernel will reach the ground!
9 For behold, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations and cause it to move to and fro as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least kernel fall upon the earth and be lost [from My sight].
10 All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.
10 All sinners among my people will die by the sword, especially all who are saying, "Disaster will not come upon or conquer us!'"
10 All the sinners of My people shall die by the sword, who say, The evil shall not overtake or meet [and assail] us.
11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
11 "At that time I will restore David's fallen tent, restoring its torn places. I will restore its ruins, rebuilding it as it was long ago,
11 In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David, the fallen hut or booth, and close up its breaches; and I will raise up its ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old,
12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.
12 so my people may inherit the remnant of Edom and all of the nations that bear my name," declares the LORD who is bringing this about.
12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom and of all the nations that are called by My name, says the Lord Who does this.
13 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord,“When the (AJ)plowman will overtake the reaperAnd the treader of grapes him who sows seed; When the (AK)mountains will drip sweet (AL)wineAnd all the hills will be dissolved.
13 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.
13 Hear this! The days are coming—this is the Lord’s declaration—when the plowman will overtake the reaper(AH)and the one who treads grapes, the sower of seed. The mountains will drip with sweet wine, and all the hills will flow with it.(AI)
13 "Look! The days are coming," declares the LORD, "when the one who sows will overtake the harvester and the treader of grapes will overtake the planter. Fresh wine will drip down from the mountains, cascading down from the hills.
13 Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him who sows the seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine and all the hills shall melt [that is, everything heretofore barren and unfruitful shall overflow with spiritual blessing].
14 “Also I will (AM)restore the (f)captivity of My people Israel,And they will (AN)rebuild the ruined cities and live in them; They will also (AO)plant vineyards and drink their wine,And make gardens and eat their fruit.
14 And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
14 I will surely restore my people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them. They will plant vineyards and drink the wine from them. They will plant gardens and eat the fruit from them.
14 And I will bring back the exiles of My people Israel, and they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards and drink the wine from them; they shall also make gardens and eat the fruit of them.
15 And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.
15 I will plant the people of Israel in their own land, never again to be torn out of their land that I gave them," says the LORD your God.
15 And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be torn up out of their land which I gave them, says the Lord your God.
