Edom Will Be Humbled

1 The vision of Obadiah.Thus says the Lord (a)God concerning (A)Edom—(B)We have heard a report from the Lord,And an (C)envoy has been sent among the nations saying,(D)Arise and let us go against her for battle”—

1 The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

1 The vision of Obadiah.This is what the Lord God has said about Edom:(A)We have heard a message from the Lord;(B)a messenger has been sent(C) among the nations:“Rise up,(D) and let us go to war against her.”(a)

1 1Obadiah's vision: This is what the Lord God has to say about Edom. We have heard a report from the Lord, and a messenger has been dispatched among the nations to say "Get up! Let us rise up against her to fight!"

1 The vision of Obadiah.Thus says the Lord God concerning (a)Edom—We have heard a report from the Lord,And an ambassador has been sent among the nations, saying,(b)Arise, and let us rise up against Edom for battle [with the Lord as commander]!”(A)

Edom's Certain Judgment

2 “Behold, I will make you (E)small among the nations;You are greatly despised.

2 Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly despised.

2 Look, I will make you insignificant(E)among the nations;you will be deeply despised.

2 "Look! I will make you insignificant among the nations; you will be utterly despised.

2 “Behold [Edom], I shall [humiliate you and] make you small among the nations;You are greatly despised.(B)

3 “The (F)arrogance of your heart has deceived you,You who live in the clefts of (b)the (G)rock,In the loftiness of your dwelling place,Who say in your heart,(H)Who will bring me down to earth?’

3 The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

3 Your presumptuous heart has deceived you,(F)you who live in clefts of the rock(b)(c)(G)in your home on the heights,who say to yourself,“Who can bring me down to the ground?”(H)

3 The arrogance in your heart has deceived you, who inhabit hidden places on rocky cliffs, whose dwelling is in the heights, who say continuously to yourself, 'Who will bring me down to the ground?'

3 “The pride and arrogance of your heart have deceived you,You who live in the clefts and lofty security of the rock (Sela),Whose dwelling place is high,Who say [boastfully] in your heart,‘Who will bring me down to earth?’

4 “Though you (I)build high like the eagle,Though you set your nest among the (J)stars,From there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.

4 Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.

4 Though you seem to soar(d) like an eagle(I)and make your nest among the stars,(J)even from there I will bring you down.This is the Lord’s declaration.

4 Though you soar high like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, I will bring you down even from there," declares the Lord.

4 “Though you build [your nest] on high like the eagle,Though you set your nest among the stars,I will bring you down from there,” says the Lord.

5 “If (K)thieves came to you,If (c)robbers by night—O how you will be ruined!—Would they not steal only (d)until they had enough?If grape gatherers came to you,(L)Would they not leave some gleanings?

5 If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?

5 If thieves came to you,(K)if marauders by night—how ravaged you would be!—wouldn’t they steal only what they wanted?If grape pickers came to you,wouldn’t they leave some grapes?(L)

5 "If thieves came against you, if marauding gangs by night Oh, how you will be destroyed! Would they not steal only until they had enough? If grape pickers came to you, would they not leave some grapes to be gleaned?

5 “If thieves came to you,If robbers by night—How you will be ruined!—Would they not steal only until they had enough?If grape gatherers came to you,Would they not leave some grapes for gleaning?(C)

6 “O how Esau will be (M)ransacked,And his hidden treasures searched out!

6 How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!

6 How Esau will be pillaged,(M)his hidden treasures searched out!(N)

6 "Oh, how Esau is ransacked, how his hidden treasures are thoroughly searched out!

6 “How Esau (Edom) shall be ransacked [by men who come to ravage with divine approval]!How his hidden treasures shall be searched out!

7 “All the (N)men (e)allied with youWill send you forth to the border,And the men at peace with youWill deceive you and overpower you.They who eat your (O)breadWill set an ambush for you.(There is (P)no understanding (f)in him.)

7 All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.

7 Everyone who has a treaty with you(O)will drive you to the border;everyone at peace with youwill deceive and conquer you.Those who eat your bread(P)will set(e) a trap for you.He will be unaware of it.(Q)

7 All your allies will force you out of the land, your associates will deceive you and prevail against you. Your friends will lay out a trap for you, and you will never understand it!

7 “All the men allied with youShall send you on your way to the border;The men who were at peace with youShall deceive you and overpower you;Those who eat your bread [those you trust]Shall set a hostile ambush for you.(There is no understanding of it.)

8 “Will I not on that day,” declares the Lord,(Q)Destroy wise men from EdomAnd understanding from the mountain of Esau?

8 Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

8 In that day—this is the Lord’s declaration—will I not eliminate the wise ones of Edom(R)and those who understandfrom the hill country of Esau?

8 "In that day," declares the Lord, "will I not destroy the wise from Edom, and those with understanding from Esau's Mountain?

8 “Will I not on that day,” says the Lord,“Destroy the wise men from Edom [removing all wisdom]And understanding from the (c)mountain of Esau?

9 “Then your (R)mighty men will be dismayed, O (S)Teman,So that everyone may be (T)cut off from the mountain of Esau by slaughter.

9 And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

9 Teman,(f)(S) your warriors(T) will be terrifiedso that everyone from the hill country of Esauwill be destroyed by slaughter.(U)

9 Teman, our mighty soldiers will be dismayed, so that every man from Esau's Mountain will be slaughtered."

9 “And your mighty men shall be dismayed and demoralized, O (d)Teman,So that everyone from the mountain of Esau may be cut off in the slaughter.

Edom's Sins Against Judah

10 “Because of (U)violence to your brother Jacob,(g)You will be covered with shame,(V)And you will be cut off forever.

10 For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

10 You will be covered with shameand destroyed foreverbecause of violence done to your brother Jacob.(V)

10 "Shame will overwhelm you because of the violence you inflicted on your brother Jacob, and you will be excluded forever.

10 “Because of the violence you did against your brother Jacob,Shame shall cover you [completely],And you shall be cut off forever.

Jonah's Anger And The Lord's Compassion

11 “On the day that you (W)stood aloof,On the day that strangers carried off his wealth,And foreigners entered his gateAnd (X)cast lots for Jerusalem—(Y)You too were as one of them.

11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

11 On the day you stood aloof,(W)on the day strangers captured his wealth,(g)while foreigners entered his gateand cast lots for Jerusalem,(X)you were just like one of them.(Y)

11 "On the day you just stood by, when strangers carried away Jacob's wealth and foreigners entered his gates, casting lots for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them.

11 “On the day that [Jerusalem was destroyed] you stood aloof [from your brother Jacob]—On the day that strangers took his forces captive and carried off his wealth,And foreigners entered his gatesAnd cast lots for Jerusalem [dividing the city for plunder]—You too were like one of them [collaborating with the enemy].(D)

Commands That Edom Broke

12 (Z)Do not (h)gloat over your brother’s day,The day of his misfortune.And (AA)do not rejoice over the sons of JudahIn the day of their destruction;Yes, (AB)do not (i)boastIn the day of their distress.

12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

12 Do not(h) gloat over your brother(Z)in the day of his calamity;do not rejoice over the people of Judah(AA)in the day of their destruction;do not boastfully mock(i)(AB)in the day of distress.(AC)

12 "You should not have gloated over your brother, on the day of his calamity. You should not have rejoiced when the descendants of Judah were perishing. You should not have boasted when they were in distress.

12 “Do not gaze and gloat [in triumph] over your brother’s day,The day when his misfortune came.Do not rejoice over the sons of JudahIn the day of their destruction;Do not speak arrogantly [jeering and maliciously mocking]In the day of their distress.

13 “Do not enter the gate of My peopleIn the (AC)day of their disaster.Yes, you, do not (j)gloat over their calamityIn the day of their disaster.And do not (AD)loot their wealthIn the day of their disaster.

13 Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;

13 Do not enter the gate of My peoplein the day of their disaster.(AD)Yes, you—do not gloat over their miseryin the day of their disasterand do not appropriate their possessions(AE)in the day of their disaster.

13 "You should not have entered the gate of my people on the day of their disaster. Also, you should not have gloated over Judah's misfortune on the day of his disaster, nor should you have plundered his wealth on the day of his disaster.

13 “Do not enter the gate of My peopleIn the day of their disaster;Yes, you, do not look [with delight] on their miseryIn the day of their ruin,And do not loot treasuresIn the day of their ruin.

14 “Do not (AE)stand at the fork of the roadTo cut down their fugitives;And do not imprison their survivorsIn the day of their distress.

14 Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.

14 Do not stand at the crossroads(j)(AF)to cut off their fugitives,and do not hand over their survivorsin the day of distress.

14 And you should not have taken your stand at the crossroads to cut down his fleeing refugees, nor should you have handed over his survivors on the day of his distress."

14 “Do not stand at the crossroadTo cut down those [of Judah] who escaped;And do not hand over [to the enemy] those [of Judah] who surviveIn the day of their distress.

The Day Of The Lord Is Near

15 “For the (AF)day of the Lord draws near on all the nations.(AG)As you have done, it will be done to you.Your (AH)dealings will return on your own head.

15 For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

15 For the Day of the Lord(AG) is near,against all the nations.(AH)As you have done,(AI) so it will be done to you;what you deserve will return on your own head.(AJ)

15 "Indeed, the Day of the Lord approaches all nations. As you have done it will be done to you your deeds will return to haunt you! so will all nations drink from the cup of my wrath perpetually.

15 “For the [judgment] day of the Lord draws near on all the nations.As you have done, it shall be done to you [in retribution];Your [evil] dealings will return on your own head.(E)

16 “Because just as you (AI)drank on (AJ)My holy mountain,All the nations (AK)will drink continually.They will drink and (k)swallowAnd become as if they had never existed.

16 For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.

16 As you have drunk on My holy mountain,(AK)so all the nations will drink continually.(AL)They will drink and gulp downand be as though they had never been.

16 Just as you have drunk from the cup of my wrath upon my holy mountain, They will drink, they will gulp it down, and they will be as if they had never existed!

16 “Because just as you [Edom] drank on My holy mountain [desecrating it in the revelry of the destroyers],So shall all the nations drink continually [one by one, of My wrath];Yes, they shall drink and swallow [the full measure of punishment]And become as though they had never existed.(F)

The Victory Of Israel

17 “But on Mount (AL)Zion there will be those who escape,And it will be holy.And the house of Jacob will (AM)possess their possessions.

17 But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

17 But there will be a deliverance on Mount Zion,(AM)and it will be holy;(AN)the house of Jacob will dispossess(AO)those who dispossessed them.(k)(AP)

17 "But there will be a delivered remnant on Mount Zion. There will be holiness, and the house of Jacob will take back their possessions.

17 “But on Mount Zion [in Jerusalem] there shall be [deliverance for] those who escape,And it shall be holy [no pagan will defile it];And the house of Jacob shall possess their [former] possessions.(G)

18 “Then the house of Jacob will be a (AN)fireAnd the house of Joseph a flame;But the house of Esau will be as stubble.And they will set (l)them on fire and consume (m)them,So that there will be (AO)no survivor of the house of Esau,”For the Lord has spoken.

18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.

18 Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire,(AQ)and the house of Joseph, a burning flame,but the house of Esau will be stubble;Jacob(l) will set them on fire and consume Edom.(m)Therefore no survivor will remain(AR)of the house of Esau,for the Lord has spoken.

18 "The house of Jacob will be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, but the house of Esau will be kindling. Then Jacob and Joseph will burn and consume Esau, and no survivor will remain from the house of Esau." Indeed, the Lord has spoken it.

18 “Then the house of Jacob shall be a fireAnd the house of Joseph a flame [in executing God’s wrath];But the house of Esau will be like stubble.They (Jacob) shall set them on fire and consume them (the Edomites),So that there shall be no survivor of the house of Esau,”For the Lord has spoken.(H)

The Kingdom Of The Lord

19 Then those of the (n)Negev will (AP)possess the mountain of Esau,And those of the (o)Shephelah the (AQ)Philistine plain;Also, (AR)possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,And Benjamin will possess Gilead.

19 And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

19 People from the Negev will possess(AS)the hill country of Esau;(AT)those from the Judean foothills will possessthe land of the Philistines.(AU)They(n) will possessthe territories of Ephraim and Samaria,(AV)while Benjamin will possess Gilead.

19 "Those in the Negev will possess Esau's Mountain, and those in the Shephelah the Philistines. They will possess the fields of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria, while Benjamin will possess the territory of Gilead.

19 Then those of the Negev shall possess the mountain of Esau,And those of the Shephelah [shall possess] the Philistine plain;Also, [they shall] possess the fields of Ephraim and the fields of Samaria,And Benjamin will possess Gilead [across the Jordan River].(I)

20 And the exiles of this host of the sons of Israel,Who are among the Canaanites as far as (AS)Zarephath,And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in SepharadWill possess the (AT)cities of the Negev.

20 And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

20 The exiles of the Israelites who are in Halah(o)and who are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath(AW)as well as the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharadwill possess the cities of the Negev.(AX)

20 The exiles, the Israeli host, will possess the territory of the Canaanites all the way to Zarephath. The exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev.

20 And the exiles of this host of the sons (descendants) of IsraelWho are among the Canaanites as far as Zarephath,And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in (e)SepharadShall possess the cities of the Negev.

21 The (AU)deliverers will ascend Mount ZionTo judge the mountain of Esau,And the (AV)kingdom will be the Lord’s.

21 And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD'S.

21 Saviors(p) will ascend Mount Zion(AY)to rule over the hill country of Esau,but the kingdom will be the Lord’s.(AZ)

21 Deliverers will assemble on Mount Zion to judge Esau's Mountain, and to the Lord will the kingdom belong!"

21 The deliverers shall go up on Mount ZionTo rule and judge the mountain of Esau,And the kingdom and the kingship shall be the Lord’s.(J)
