Made Alive In Christ

1 And you [Gentiles] were once [spiritually] dead because of your shortcomings and sins.

1 And you (a)were (A)dead (b)in your trespasses and sins,

1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

1 And you were dead(A) in your trespasses and sins

1 You used to be dead because of your offenses and sins

2 You practiced such things when you lived according to the evil ways of this world, and according to the ruler of the [spiritual] powers of the air. [Note: This refers to Satan, whose influence permeates life around us]. He is the [evil] spirit who is now at work in people who are disobedient [to God].

2 in which you (B)formerly walked according to the (c)course of (C)this world, according to (D)the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in (E)the sons of disobedience.

2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

2 in which you previously walked according to the ways of this world,(B) according to the ruler who exercises authority over the lower heavens,(a)(C) the spirit(D) now working in the disobedient.(b)

2 that you once practiced as you lived according to the ways of this present world and according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now active in those who are disobedient.

3 All of us [Jews] also once lived among such people, fulfilling the improper cravings of our physical being and doing what our bodies and minds desired. In this natural [unconverted] state we were deserving of [God's] wrath, just like the rest [of mankind].

3 Among them we too all (F)formerly lived in (G)the lusts of our flesh, (d)indulging the desires of the flesh and of the (e)mind, and were (H)by nature (I)children of wrath, (J)even as the rest.

3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

3 We too all previously lived among them in our fleshly(E) desires, carrying out the inclinations(F) of our flesh and thoughts, and we were by nature children under wrath(G) as the others were also.

3 Indeed, all of us once behaved like them in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of our flesh and senses. By nature we were destined for wrath, just like everyone else.

4 But God, who has great love for us and abundant mercy [toward us],

4 But God, being (K)rich in mercy, because of (L)His great love with which He loved us,

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

4 But God, who is rich in mercy,(H) because of His great love(I) that He had for us,(c)

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love for us

5 restored [spiritual] life to us with Christ, even though we were [spiritually] dead because of our sins --- it is by God's unearned favor that you have been saved.

5 even when we were (M)dead (f)in our transgressions, made us alive together (g)with Christ ((N)by grace you have been saved),

5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

5 made us alive(J) with the Messiah even though we were dead(K) in trespasses. You are saved by grace!

5 even when we were dead because of our offenses, made us alive together with the Messiah (by grace you have been saved),

6 God raised us up with Christ [See Col. 2:12] and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms [i.e., in the church. See 1:3] in [fellowship with] Christ Jesus.

6 and (O)raised us up with Him, and (P)seated us with Him in (Q)the heavenly places in (R)Christ Jesus,

6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

6 Together with Christ Jesus He also raised us up and seated us in the heavens,(L)

6 raised us up with him, and seated us with him in the heavenly realm in the Messiah Jesus,

7 This was so that, to future ages [of people on earth and in heaven], God could demonstrate the tremendous abundance of His unearned favor, expressed by His kindness to us in [fellowship with] Christ Jesus.

7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing (S)riches of His grace in (T)kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

7 so that in the coming ages(M) He might display the immeasurable riches(N) of His grace through His kindness(O) to us in Christ Jesus.

7 so that in the coming ages he might display the limitless riches of his grace that comes to us through his kindness in the Messiah Jesus.

8 For you have been saved by God's unearned favor, through [your] faith, and that [salvation] was not the result of your own doing; it was the gift from God.

8 For (U)by grace you have been saved (V)through faith; and (h)that not of yourselves, it is (W)the gift of God;

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

8 For you are saved by grace(P) through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift—

8 For by such grace you have been saved through faith. This does not come from you; it is the gift of God

9 It was not the result of your own [good] deeds [See Titus 3:5], so that no one could boast [about it].

9 (X)not as a result of works, so that (Y)no one may boast.

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

9 not from works, so that no one can boast.

9 and not the result of actions, to put a stop to all boasting.

10 For we [Christians] are the product of God's workmanship, [re-] created in [fellowship with] Christ Jesus for [the purpose of] doing good deeds. God had previously determined that this should be our practice.

10 For we are His workmanship, (Z)created in (AA)Christ Jesus for (AB)good works, which God (AC)prepared beforehand so that we would (AD)walk in them.

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

10 For we are His creation, created(Q) in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time(R) so that we should walk in them.

10 For we are God's masterpiece, created in the Messiah Jesus to perform good actions that God prepared long ago to be our way of life.

Jewish And Gentile Believers United In Christ

11 So, you Gentiles by birth should remember what you once were. You are called "Uncircumcision" by those who are called "Circumcision" [i.e., the Jews], (which refers to a physical procedure performed by people).

11 Therefore remember that (AE)formerly (AF)you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called “(AG)Uncircumcision” by the so-called “(AH)Circumcision,” which is performed in the flesh by human hands—

11 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

11 So then, remember that at one time you were Gentiles in the flesh—called “the uncircumcised” by those called “the circumcised,”(S) which is done in the flesh by human hands.(T)

11 So then, remember that at one time you gentiles by birth were called "the uncircumcised" by those who called themselves "the circumcised." They underwent physical circumcision done by human hands.

12 [Remember] that you were at that time without Christ; [you were] excluded from citizenship in the nation of Israel; [you were] foreigners regarding the Agreements of [God's] promises. You had no hope and were without God in the world.

12 remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, (i)(AI)excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to (AJ)the covenants of promise, having (AK)no hope and (AL)without God in the world.

12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

12 At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from the citizenship of Israel, and foreigners to the covenants of the promise,(U) without hope(V) and without God in the world.

12 At that time you were without the Messiah, excluded from citizenship in Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise. You had no hope and were in the world without God.

13 But now [that you are] in [fellowship with] Christ, you [Gentiles], who were once far away [from God], have been brought near [to Him] through the blood of Christ.

13 But now in (AM)Christ Jesus you who (AN)formerly were (AO)far off (j)have (AP)been brought near (k)(AQ)by the blood of Christ.

13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

13 But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood(W) of the Messiah.

13 But now, in union with the Messiah Jesus, you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah.

14 For Christ is [the source of] our peace. He made both [Jews and Gentiles] one people, and broke down the barrier wall of hostility that divided them,

14 For He Himself is (AR)our peace, (AS)who made both groups into one and broke down the (l)barrier of the dividing wall,

14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

14 For He is our peace, who made both groups one(X) and tore down the dividing wall of hostility. In His flesh,

14 For it is he who is our peace. Through his mortality he made both groups one by tearing down the wall of hostility that divided them.

15 by abolishing in His fleshly body the [entire Jewish] law of commandments contained in decrees. [This was] so that He could create in [unity with] Himself one new person [i.e., the church] out of the two peoples [i.e., Jews and Gentiles], thereby bringing about peace [between them].

15 (m)by (AT)abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is (AU)the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might (n)(AV)make the two into (AW)one new man, thus establishing (AX)peace,

15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

15 He made of no effect the law consisting of commands and expressed in regulations, so that He might create(Y) in Himself one(Z) new man from the two, resulting in peace.

15 He rendered the Law inoperative, along with its commandments and regulations, thus creating in himself one new humanity from the two, thereby making peace,

16 [This was also intended] to reestablish harmony between both of these peoples and God in [this] one body, through [Christ's death on] the cross. By doing this He put to death the hostility [between them].

16 and might (AY)reconcile them both in (AZ)one body to God through the cross, (o)by it having (BA)put to death the enmity.

16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

16 He did this so that He might reconcile both to God in one body(AA) through the cross and put the hostility to death by it.(d)

16 and reconciling both groups to God in one body through the cross, on which he eliminated the hostility.

17 And Christ came and preached peace to you [Gentiles], who were far away [from God], and peace to those [Jews] who were near [to Him].

17 And (BB)He came and preached (BC)peace to you who were (BD)far away, and peace to those who were (BE)near;

17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

17 When the Messiah came, He proclaimed the good news(AB) of peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.(AC)

17 He came and proclaimed peace for you who were far away and for you who were near.

18 For through Him we [Jews and Gentiles] both have access to the Father by means of one Holy Spirit.

18 for through Him we both have (BF)our access in (BG)one Spirit to (BH)the Father.

18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

18 For through Him we both have access(AD) by one Spirit to the Father.(AE)

18 For through him, both of us have access to the Father by one Spirit.

A Temple For The Lord

19 So then, you [Gentiles] are no longer foreigners and aliens [i.e., to God's promises. See verse 12], but you are fellow-citizens with the saints [i.e., God's holy people], and are part of God's family.

19 So then you are no longer (BI)strangers and aliens, but you are (BJ)fellow citizens with the (p)saints, and are of (BK)God’s household,

19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

19 So then you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with the saints, and members of God’s household,

19 That is why you are no longer strangers and foreigners but fellow citizens with the saints and members of God's household,

20 [You are] built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets [See I Cor. 12:28], with Christ Jesus Himself being the principal stone by which the entire building is aligned.

20 having been (BL)built on (BM)the foundation of (BN)the apostles and prophets, (BO)Christ Jesus Himself being the (BP)corner stone,

20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,(AF) with Christ Jesus Himself as the cornerstone.

20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, the Messiah Jesus himself being the cornerstone.

21 In [harmony with] Him the entire building [i.e., the church] is properly assembled, rising into a dedicated temple for the Lord. [See I Cor. 3:16-17].

21 (BQ)in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into (BR)a holy (q)temple in the Lord,

21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

21 The whole building, being put together(AG) by Him, grows into a holy sanctuary in the Lord.(AH)

21 In union with him the whole building is joined together and rises into a holy sanctuary for the Lord.

22 In [harmony with] Him you people are also being constructed together into a place where God lives by His Spirit.

22 in whom you also are being (BS)built together into a (BT)dwelling of God in the Spirit.

22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

22 You also are being built together(AI) for God’s dwelling(AJ) in the Spirit.

22 You, too, are being built in him, along with the others, into a place for God's Spirit to dwell.
