The Golden Calf

1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.

1 Now when the people saw that Moses (A)delayed to come down from the mountain, the people assembled about Aaron and said to him, “Come, (B)make us (a)a god who will go before us; as for (C)this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

1 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

1 When the people saw that Moses delayed in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, “Come, make us a god(a) who will go before us because this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!”(A)

1 When the people saw that Moses took a long time to come down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and told him, "Come here and make us a god who will go before us, because, as for this fellow Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don't know what has become of him."

2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden rings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

2 Aaron said to them, “(D)Tear off the gold rings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.”

2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

2 Then Aaron replied to them, “Take off the gold rings(B) that are on the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters and bring them to me.”

2 Aaron told them, "Tear off the gold rings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters and bring them to me."

3 And all the people brake off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

3 Then all the people tore off the gold rings which were in their ears and brought them to Aaron.

3 And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

3 So all the people took off the gold rings that were on their ears and brought them to Aaron.

3 All the people tore off the gold rings that were in their ears and brought them to him.

4 And he received it at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it a molten calf: and they said, These are thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

4 He took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool and made it into a (E)molten calf; and they said, “(b)This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.”

4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

4 He took the gold from their hands, fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made it into an image of a calf. Then they said, “Israel, this is your God,(b) who brought you up from the land of Egypt!”(C)

4 He took them from them and, using a tool, fashioned them into a molten calf. The people said, "This, Israel, is your god who brought you out of the land of Egypt."

5 And when Aaron saw this , he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To-morrow shall be a feast to Jehovah.

5 Now when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.”

5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.

5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; then he made an announcement: “There will be a festival(D) to the Lord tomorrow.”

5 When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of it, and then he proclaimed, "Tomorrow is to be a festival to the LORD."

6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt-offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

6 So the next day they rose early and (F)offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and (G)the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up (H)to play.

6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

6 Early the next morning they arose, offered burnt offerings, and presented fellowship offerings. The people sat down to eat and drink, then got up to play.(E)

6 They got up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. Then the people sat down to eat and drink, and then they got up to play.

7 And Jehovah spake unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, that thou broughtest up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

7 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, “Go (c)down at once, for your people, whom (I)you brought up from the land of Egypt, have (J)corrupted themselves.

7 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:

7 The Lord spoke to Moses: “Go down at once! For your people you brought up from the land of Egypt have acted corruptly.(F)

7 The LORD told Moses, "Go down immediately, because your people whom you led out of Egypt have behaved corruptly.

8 they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed unto it, and said, These are thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

8 They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them. (K)They have made for themselves a molten calf, and have worshiped it and (L)have sacrificed to it and said, ‘(d)(M)This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!’”

8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

8 They have quickly turned from the way I commanded them; they have made for themselves an image of a calf. They have bowed down to it, sacrificed to it, and said, ‘Israel, this is your God,(c) who brought you up from the land of Egypt.’”(G)

8 They have been quick to turn aside from the way I commanded them, and they have made for themselves a molten calf. They have bowed down to it in worship, they have offered sacrifices to it, and they have said, "This, Israel, is your god who brought you out of the land of Egypt.'"

9 And Jehovah said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

9 (N)The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and behold, they are (e)(O)an obstinate people.

9 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

9 The Lord also said to Moses: “I have seen this people, and they are indeed a stiff-necked(H) people.

9 Then the LORD told Moses, "I've seen these people and indeed they're obstinate.

10 now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

10 Now then (P)let Me alone, that My anger may burn against them and that I may destroy them; and (Q)I will make of you a great nation.”

10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

10 Now leave Me alone, so that My anger can burn against them and I can destroy them. Then I will make you into a great nation.”(I)

10 Now let me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may consume them, but I'll make a great nation of you."

11 And Moses besought Jehovah his God, and said, Jehovah, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, that thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?

11 Then (R)Moses entreated the Lord his God, and said, “O Lord, why does Your anger burn against Your people whom You have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?

11 And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

11 But Moses interceded with the Lord his God: “Lord, why does Your anger burn against Your people You brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a strong hand?

11 But Moses implored the LORD his God: "LORD, why are you angry with your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a show of force?

12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, saying, For evil did he bring them forth, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

12 Why should (S)the Egyptians speak, saying, ‘With evil intent He brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your burning anger and change Your mind about doing harm to Your people.

12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

12 Why should the Egyptians say, ‘He brought them out with an evil intent to kill them in the mountains and wipe them off the face of the earth’? Turn from Your great anger and relent concerning this disaster planned for Your people.(J)

12 Why should the Egyptians say, "He brought them out with an evil intention to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth'? Turn from your anger and change your mind about the calamity against your people.

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants to whom You (T)swore by Yourself, and said to them, ‘I will (U)multiply your (f)descendants as the stars of the heavens, and (V)all this land of which I have spoken I will give to your (g)descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’”

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

13 Remember Your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel—You swore to them by Your very self(K) and declared, ‘I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and will give your offspring all this land that I have promised, and they will inherit it forever.’”(L)

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants to whom you swore by yourself as you told them, "I'll increase the number of your descendants like the stars of the heavens, I'll give your descendants all of this land about which I have spoken, and they are to possess it forever.'"

14 And Jehovah repented of the evil which he said he would do unto his people.

14 (W)So the Lord changed His mind about the harm which He said He would do to His people.

14 And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

14 So the Lord relented(M) concerning the disaster He said He would bring on His people.

14 So the LORD changed his mind about the calamity he had said he would bring on his people.

15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, with the two tables of the testimony in his hand; tables that were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

15 (X)Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, (Y)tablets which were written on both (h)sides; they were written on one side and the other.

15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written.

15 Then Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides—inscribed front and back.

15 Then Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two Tablets of the Testimony in his hand, tablets which were written on both sides. They were written on one side and the other.

16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

16 The tablets were God’s work, and the writing was God’s writing engraved on the tablets.

16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was God’s writing, engraved on the tablets.(N)

16 The tablets were the work of God and the writing was God's writing, inscribed on the tablets.

17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

17 Now when Joshua heard the sound of the people (i)as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a sound of war in the camp.”

17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.

17 When Joshua heard the sound of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a sound of war in the camp.”

17 When Joshua heard the sound of the people as they shouted, he told Moses, "The sound of war is coming from the camp."

18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome; but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

18 But he said,“It is not the sound of the cry of triumph,Nor is it the sound of the cry of defeat; But the sound of singing I hear.”

18 And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.

18 But Moses replied:It’s not the sound of a victory cryand not the sound of a cry of defeat;I hear the sound of singing!

18 Moses said, "It is not the sound of a victory shout, and it's not the sound of a shout of defeat, but it's the sound of singing that I hear."

19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing: and Moses anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.

19 It came about, as soon as (j)Moses came near the camp, that (Z)he saw the calf and the dancing; and Moses’ anger burned, and (AA)he threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them (k)at the foot of the mountain.

19 And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount.

19 As he approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses became enraged and threw the tablets out of his hands, smashing them at the base of the mountain.

19 As Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, he became angry. He threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them at the base of the mountain.

20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it with fire, and ground it to powder, and strewed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

20 (AB)He took the calf which they had made and burned it with fire, and ground it to powder, and scattered it over the surface of the water and made the sons of Israel drink it.

20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it in the fire, and ground it to powder, and strawed it upon the water, and made the children of Israel drink of it.

20 Then he took the calf they had made, burned it up, and ground it to powder. He scattered the powder over the surface of the water and forced the Israelites to drink the water.

20 He took the calf that they had made, burned it with fire, and ground it into powder. He scattered it on the water and made the Israelis drink it.

21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought a great sin upon them?

21 Then Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you, that you have brought such great sin upon them?”

21 And Moses said unto Aaron, What did this people unto thee, that thou hast brought so great a sin upon them?

21 Then Moses asked Aaron, “What did these people do to you that you have led them into such a grave sin?”

21 Then Moses asked Aaron, "What did this people do to you that you brought such great sin upon them?"

22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are'set on evil.

22 Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord burn; you know the people yourself, (AC)that they are (l)prone to evil.

22 And Aaron said, Let not the anger of my lord wax hot: thou knowest the people, that they are set on mischief.

22 “Don’t be enraged, my lord,” Aaron replied. “You yourself know that the people are intent on evil.(O)

22 Aaron said, "Sir, don't be angry. You know the people that they're intent on evil.

23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.

23 For (AD)they said to me, ‘Make (m)a god for us who will go before us; for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’

23 For they said unto me, Make us gods, which shall go before us: for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

23 They said to me, ‘Make us a god(d) who will go before us because this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt—we don’t know what has happened to him!’

23 They told me, "Make a god for us who will go before us because, as for this fellow Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we don't know what has become of him.'

24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off: so they gave it me; and I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

24 I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them tear it off.’ So they gave it to me, and (AE)I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.”

24 And I said unto them, Whosoever hath any gold, let them break it off. So they gave it me: then I cast it into the fire, and there came out this calf.

24 So I said to them, ‘Whoever has gold, take it off,’ and they gave it to me. When I threw it into the fire, out came this calf!”

24 So I told them, "Whoever has gold ornaments, tear them off.' When they gave it to me, I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf."

25 And when Moses saw that the people were broken loose, (for Aaron had let them loose for a derision among their enemies,)

25 Now when Moses saw that the people were (n)out of control—for Aaron had (AF)let them (o)get out of control to be a derision among (p)their enemies—

25 And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)

25 Moses saw that the people were out of control, for Aaron had let them get out of control, resulting in weakness before their enemies.(e)

25 When Moses saw that the people were out of control since Aaron had let them get out of control, something that incited ridicule from their enemies

26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Whoso is on Jehovah's side, let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered together to him.

26 Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD'S side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

26 And Moses stood at the camp’s entrance and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites gathered around him.

26 he stood in the gate of the camp and called out: "Whoever is for the LORD come over to me," and all the sons of Levi gathered around him.

27 And he said unto them, Thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, Put ye every man his sword upon his thigh, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.

27 He said to them, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Every man of you put his sword upon his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and kill every man his brother, and every man his friend, and every man his (q)neighbor.’”

27 And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

27 He told them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says, ‘Every man fasten his sword to his side; go back and forth through the camp from entrance to entrance, and each of you kill his brother, his friend, and his neighbor.’”(P)

27 He told them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says, "Every man put his sword on his thigh, and go back and forth from gate to gate in the camp, and each of you kill his brother and friend and neighbor.'"

28 And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

28 So (AG)the sons of Levi did (r)as Moses instructed, and about three thousand men of the people fell that day.

28 And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

28 The Levites did as Moses commanded, and about 3,000 men fell dead that day among the people.

28 The descendants of Levi did just as Moses told them, and about 3,000 people died that day.

29 And Moses said, Consecrate yourselves to-day to Jehovah, yea, every man against his son, and against his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

29 Then Moses said, “(s)Dedicate yourselves today to the Lord—for every man has been against his son and against his brother—in order that He may bestow a blessing upon you today.”

29 For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves to day to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day.

29 Afterward Moses said, “Today you have been dedicated(f) to the Lord, since each man went against his son and his brother. Therefore you have brought a blessing on yourselves today.”(Q)

29 Moses said, "You have been ordained to serve the LORD today, and you have brought a blessing on yourselves today because every man opposed his son or brother."

Moses Begs The Lord To Spare The People

30 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto Jehovah; peradventure I shall make atonement for your sin.

30 On the next day Moses said to the people, “(AH)You yourselves have (t)committed a great sin; and now I am going up to the Lord, perhaps I can (AI)make atonement for your sin.”

30 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses said unto the people, Ye have sinned a great sin: and now I will go up unto the LORD; peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin.

30 The following day Moses said to the people, “You have committed a grave sin. Now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I will be able to atone for your sin.”(R)

30 The next day Moses told the people, "You committed a great sin, and now I'll go up to the LORD, and perhaps I can make atonement for your sin."

31 And Moses returned unto Jehovah, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

31 Then Moses returned to the Lord, and said, “Alas, this people has (u)committed a great sin, and they have made (v)a (AJ)god of gold for themselves.

31 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.

31 So Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a grave sin; they have made a god of gold for themselves.(S)

31 Moses returned to the LORD and said, "Please, LORD, this people committed a great sin by making a god of gold for themselves.

32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin-; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

32 But now, if You will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out from Your (AK)book which You have written!”

32 Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin ; and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.

32 Now if You would only forgive their sin. But if not, please erase me from the book You have written.”(T)

32 Now, if you will, forgive their sin but if not, blot me out of your book which you have written."

33 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

33 The Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, (AL)I will blot him out of My book.

33 And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.

33 The Lord replied to Moses: “I will erase whoever has sinned against Me from My book.(U)

33 The LORD told Moses, "Whoever sins against me, I'll blot him out of my book.

34 And now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine angel shall go before thee; nevertheless in the day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them.

34 But go now, lead the people (AM)where I told you. Behold, (AN)My angel shall go before you; nevertheless (AO)in the day when I (w)punish, (AP)I will (x)punish them for their sin.”

34 Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.

34 Now go, lead the people to the place I told you about; see, My angel will go before you. But on the day I settle accounts, I will hold them accountable for their sin.”(V)

34 Now, go, and lead the people where I told you, and now my angel will go before you, but on the day when I do punish, I'll punish them for their sin."

35 And Jehovah smote the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

35 (AQ)Then the Lord smote the people, because of (AR)what they did with the calf which Aaron had made.

35 And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.

35 And the Lord inflicted a plague on the people for what they did with the calf Aaron had made.

35 Then the LORD sent a plague on the people because they made the calf (the one Aaron made).
