The Rescue Of Lot From Sodom

1 And the two angels came to Sodom at even. And Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. And Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them; and he bowed down, the face toward the ground,

1 Now the (A)two angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When (B)Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and (a)bowed down with his face to the ground.

1 And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

1 The two angels entered Sodom(A) in the evening as Lot was sitting at Sodom’s gate. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them. He bowed with his face to the ground

1 The two angels entered Sodom at sunset while Lot was sitting in the gate area of the city. When Lot saw them, he got up, greeted them, bowed low with his face to the ground,

2 and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and lodge, and wash your feet; and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way. And they said, No; but we will pass the night in the open place.

2 And he said, “Now behold, my lords, please turn aside into your servant’s house, and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” They said however, “No, but we shall spend the night in the square.”

2 And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.

2 and said, “My lords, turn aside to your servant’s house, wash your feet, and spend the night. Then you can get up early and go on your way.”“No,” they said. “We would rather spend the night in the square.”

2 and said, "Look, my lords! Please come inside your servant's house, wash your feet, and spend the night. Then you can get up early and be on your way." But they responded, "No, we would rather spend the night in the town square."

3 And he urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house. And he made them a repast, and baked unleavened cakes; and they ate.

3 Yet he urged them strongly, so they turned aside to him and entered his house; (C)and he prepared a feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

3 And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

3 But he urged them so strongly that they followed him and went into his house. He prepared a feast and baked unleavened bread for them, and they ate.

3 But Lot kept urging them strongly, so they turned aside and entered his house. He prepared a festival and baked unleavened flat bread for them, and they ate.

4 Before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, from the youngest to the oldest all the people from every quarter.

4 Before they lay down, (D)the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people (b)from every quarter;

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:

4 Before they went to bed, the men of the city of Sodom, both young and old, the whole population, surrounded the house.

4 Before they could lie down, all the men of Sodom and its outskirts, both young and old, surrounded the house.

5 And they called to Lot, and said to him, Where are the men that have come in to thee to-night? bring them out to us that we may know them.

5 and they called to Lot and said to him, “(E)Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may (c)have relations with them.”

5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

5 They called out to Lot and said, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Send them out to us so we can have sex with them!”(B)

5 They called out to Lot and asked, "Where are the men who came to visit you tonight? Bring them out to us so we can have sex with them!"

6 And Lot went out to them to the entrance, and shut the door after him,

6 But Lot went out to them at the doorway, and shut the door behind him,

6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,

6 Lot went out to them at the entrance and shut the door behind him.

6 Lot went outside to them, shut the door behind him,

7 and said, I pray you, my brethren, do not wickedly!

7 and said, “Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly.

7 And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.

7 He said, “Don’t do this evil, my brothers.

7 and said, "I urge you, my brothers, don't do such a wicked thing.

8 Behold now, I have two daughters who have not known a man: let me now bring them out to you; and do to them as is good in your sight: only, to these men do nothing; for therefore have they come under the shadow of my roof.

8 Now behold, (F)I have two daughters who have not (d)had relations with man; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them (e)whatever you like; only do nothing to these men, inasmuch as they have come under the (f)shelter of my roof.”

8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.

8 Look, I’ve got two daughters who haven’t had sexual relations with a man.(C) I’ll bring them out to you, and you can do whatever you want(a) to them. However, don’t do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof.”

8 Look here, I have two daughters who are virgins. Let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them whatever you wish, only don't do anything to these men, because they're here under my protection."

9 And they said, Back there! And they said again, This one came to sojourn, and he must be a judge? Now we will deal worse with thee than with them. And they pressed hard on the man on Lot; and drew near to break the door.

9 But they said, “Stand aside.” Furthermore, they said, “This one came in (g)as an alien, and already (G)he is acting like a judge; now we will treat you worse than them.” So they pressed hard against (h)Lot and came near to break the door.

9 And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

9 “Get out of the way!” they said, adding, “This one came here as a foreigner, but he’s acting like a judge!(D) Now we’ll do more harm to you than to them.” They put pressure on Lot and came up to break down the door.

9 But they replied, "Get out of the way! This man came here as a foreigner, and now he's acting like a judge! So we're going to deal more harshly with you than with them." Then they pushed hard against the man (that is, against Lot), intending to break down the door.

10 And the men stretched out their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.

10 But (H)the men reached out their (i)hands and brought Lot into the house (j)with them, and shut the door.

10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

10 But the angels(b) reached out, brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.

10 But the angels inside reached out, dragged Lot back into the house with them, shut the door,

11 And they smote the men that were at the entrance of the house with blindness, from the smallest to the greatest; and they wearied themselves to find the entrance.

11 (I)They (k)struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the doorway.

11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

11 They struck the men who were at the entrance of the house, both young and old, with a blinding light so that they were unable to find the entrance.(E)

11 and blinded the men who were at the entrance of the house, from the least important to the greatest, so they were unable to find the doorway.

Lot Leaves Sodom, And The Cities Are Destroyed

12 And the men said to Lot, Whom hast thou here besides? a son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and all whom thou hast in the city bring them out of the place.

12 Then the two men said to Lot, “Whom else have you here? A son-in-law, and your sons, and your daughters, and whomever you have in the city, bring them out of the place;

12 And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:

12 Then the angels(c) said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here: a son-in-law, your sons and daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of this place,

12 "Do you have anyone else here in the city?" the angels asked Lot. "A son-in-law? Sons? Daughters? Get them out of this place,

13 For we are going to destroy this place, because the cry of them is great before Jehovah, and Jehovah has sent us to destroy it.

13 for we are about to destroy this place, because (J)their outcry has become so great before the Lord that (K)the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”

13 For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.

13 for we are about to destroy this place because the outcry against its people is so great before the Lord, that the Lord has sent us to destroy it.”(F)

13 because we're going to destroy it. Their outcry has come to the attention of the LORD, so he sent us here to destroy it!"

14 And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters, and said, Up, go out of this place, for Jehovah will destroy the city. But he was as if he jested, in the sight of his sons-in-law.

14 Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who (l)were to marry his daughters, and said, “Up, (L)get out of this place, for the Lord will destroy the city.” (M)But he appeared to his sons-in-law (m)to be jesting.

14 And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were going to marry(d) his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city!”(G) But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

14 Lot then went out and told his sons-in-law (they had married his daughters), "Get out of here! The LORD is going to destroy this city!" But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

15 And as the dawn arose, the angels urged Lot, saying, Up, take thy wife and thy two daughters who are present, lest thou perish in the iniquity of the city.

15 When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the (n)punishment of the city.”

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city.

15 At daybreak the angels urged Lot on: “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment(e) of the city.”

15 As dawn was breaking, the angels pressured Lot. "Get going!" they told him. "Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be engulfed by the devastation that's coming to this city."

16 And as he lingered, the men laid hold on his hand, and on the hand of his wife, and on the hand of his two daughters, Jehovah being merciful to him; and they led him out, and set him without the city.

16 But he hesitated. So the men (N)seized his hand and the hand of his wife and the (o)hands of his two daughters, for (O)the compassion of the Lord was upon him; and they brought him out, and put him outside the city.

16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

16 But he hesitated. Because of the Lord’s compassion for him, the men grabbed his hand, his wife’s hand, and the hands of his two daughters. Then they brought him out and left him outside the city.

16 But Lot kept lingering in the city, so the men grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and two daughters (because of the LORD's compassion for him!), brought them out of the city, and left them outside.

17 And it came to pass when they had brought them outside, that he said, Escape for thy life: look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain: escape to the mountain, lest thou perish.

17 When they had brought them outside, (p)one said, “(P)Escape for your life! (Q)Do not look behind you, and do not stay (q)anywhere in the (R)valley; escape to (S)the (r)mountains, or you will be swept away.”

17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.

17 As soon as the angels got them outside, one of them(f) said, “Run for your lives! Don’t look back and don’t stop anywhere on the plain! Run to the mountains, or you will be swept away!”

17 Then one of them said, "Flee for your lives! Don't look back or stop anywhere on the plain. Escape to the hills, or you'll be swept away!"

18 And Lot said to them, Not so, I pray thee, Lord;

18 But Lot said to them, “Oh no, my lords!

18 And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord:

18 But Lot said to them, “No, my lords(g)—please.

18 "No! Please, my lords!" Lot pleaded with them.

19 behold now, thy servant has found favour in thine eyes, and thou hast magnified thy goodness, which thou hast shewn to me in preserving my soul alive; but I cannot escape to the mountain, lest calamity lay hold on me, that I die.

19 Now behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your lovingkindness, which you have shown me by saving my life; but I cannot escape to the (s)mountains, for the disaster will overtake me and I will die;

19 Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:

19 Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness by saving my life. But I can’t run to the mountains; the disaster will overtake me, and I will die.

19 "Your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me your gracious love in how you have dealt with me by keeping me alive. I cannot escape to the hills, because I'm afraid the disaster will overtake me, and I'll die.

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee to, and it is small: I pray thee, let me escape thither is it not small? and my soul shall live.

20 now behold, this town is near enough to flee to, and it is small. Please, let me escape there (is it not small?) (t)that my life may be saved.”

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.

20 Look, this town is close enough for me to run to. It is a small place. Please let me go there—it’s only a small place, isn’t it?—so that I can survive.”

20 Look, there is a town nearby where I can flee, and it's a small one. Let me escape there! It's a small one, isn't it? That way I'll stay alive!"

21 And he said to him, Behold, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which thou hast spoken.

21 He said to him, “Behold, I grant you this (u)request also, not to overthrow the town of which you have spoken.

21 And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.

21 And he said to him, “All right,(h) I’ll grant your request(i) about this matter too and will not demolish the town you mentioned.

21 "All right," the angel replied to Lot, "I'll agree with your request! I won't overthrow the town that you mentioned.

22 Haste, escape thither; for I cannot do anything until thou art come there. Therefore the name of the city is called Zoar.

22 Hurry, escape there, for I cannot do anything until you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the town was called (v)(T)Zoar.

22 Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

22 Hurry up! Run there, for I cannot do anything until you get there.” Therefore the name of the city is Zoar.(j)(H)

22 Hurry up and flee there, because I cannot do anything until you get to that town." Therefore the name of the town was called Zoar.

The Destruction Of Sodom

23 The sun rose upon the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

23 The sun had risen over the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

23 The sun had risen over the land when Lot reached Zoar.

23 The sun had risen over the land about the time Lot reached Zoar.

24 And Jehovah rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from Jehovah out of heaven,

24 Then the Lord (U)rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven,

24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

24 Then out of the sky the Lord rained burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah from the Lord.(I)

24 Then the LORD rained sulfur and fire out of the sky from the LORD on Sodom and Gomorrah,

25 and overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew upon the ground.

25 and (V)He overthrew those cities, and all the (w)valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

25 He demolished these cities, the entire plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and whatever grew on the ground.

25 overthrowing those cities, all of the plain, and everyone who lived in the cities. He also destroyed the plants that grew out of the ground.

26 And his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

26 But his wife, from behind him, (W)looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

26 But his wife looked back and became a pillar of salt.(J)

26 But Lot's wife looked back as she lingered behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

27 And Abraham rose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before Jehovah;

27 Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to (X)the place where he had stood before the Lord;

27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he stood before the LORD:

27 Early in the morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood before the Lord.(K)

27 Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD earlier.

28 and he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and lo, a smoke went up from the land as the smoke of a furnace.

28 and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the (x)valley, and he saw, and behold, (Y)the smoke of the land ascended like the smoke of a (y)furnace.

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.

28 He looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw that smoke was going up from the land like the smoke of a furnace.

28 He looked off toward Sodom, Gomorrah, and the entire plain, and he saw smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.

29 And it came to pass when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.

29 Thus it came about, when God destroyed the cities of the (z)valley, that (Z)God remembered Abraham, and (AA)sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

29 So it was, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham and brought Lot out of the middle of the upheaval when He demolished the cities where Lot had lived.

29 And so it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, he remembered Abraham and brought Lot out from the midst of the destruction when he overthrew the cities where Lot had lived.

Lot And His Daughters

30 And Lot went up from Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar. And he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

30 Lot went up from Zoar, and (aa)(AB)stayed in the (ab)mountains, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to (ac)stay in Zoar; and he (ad)stayed in a cave, he and his two daughters.

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters.

30 Lot departed from Zoar and lived in the mountains along with his two daughters, because he was afraid to live in Zoar. Instead, he and his two daughters lived in a cave.

30 Later on, Lot and his two daughters abandoned Zoar and settled in the hills because Lot was afraid to live in Zoar. He lived there in a cave, along with his two daughters.

31 And the first-born said to the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the land to come in to us after the manner of all the earth:

31 Then the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man (ae)on earth to (AC)come in to us after the manner of the earth.

31 And the firstborn said unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth:

31 Then the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man in the land to sleep with us as is the custom of all the land.

31 One day the firstborn told the younger one, "Our father is old, and there's no man in the land to have sex with us, as everybody else throughout all the earth does.

32 come, let us give our father wine to drink, and let us lie with him, that we may preserve seed alive of our father.

32 Come, (AD)let us make our father drink wine, and let us lie with him that we may preserve (af)our family through our father.”

32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

32 Come, let’s get our father to drink wine so that we can sleep with him and preserve our father’s line.”

32 Come on! Let's make our father drink wine, and then we'll have sex with him so we can preserve our father's lineage."

33 And they gave their father wine to drink that night. And the first-born went in, and lay with her father, and he did not know of her lying down, nor of her rising.

33 So they made their father drink wine that night, and the firstborn went in and lay with her father; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

33 And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

33 So they got their father to drink wine that night, and the firstborn came and slept with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.

33 So they had their father drink wine that night, and the older one had sexual relations with her father, but he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.

34 And it came to pass on the next day that the first-born said to the younger, Lo, I lay last night with my father: let us give him wine to drink to-night also, and go thou in, lie with him, that we may preserve seed alive of our father.

34 On the following day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve (ag)our family through our father.”

34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.

34 The next day the firstborn said to the younger, “Look, I slept with my father last night. Let’s get him to drink wine again tonight so you can go sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”

34 The next day the firstborn told the younger one, "Look! I had sex with my father last night. Let's make him drink wine tonight again as well. Then you have sex with him, too. That way we'll preserve our father's lineage."

35 And they gave their father wine to drink that night also. And the younger arose, and lay with him; and he did not know of her lying down, nor of her rising.

35 So they made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger arose and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

35 And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

35 That night they again got their father to drink wine, and the younger went and slept with him; he did not know when she lay down or when she got up.

35 So they made their father drink wine that night as well, so he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.

36 And both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.

36 Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father.

36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

36 So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.

36 That's how both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father.

37 And the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites to this day.

37 The firstborn bore a son, and called his name (AE)Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.

37 And the firstborn bare a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

37 The firstborn gave birth to a son and named him Moab.(k) He is the father of the Moabites of today.(L)

37 The firstborn gave birth to a son and named him Moab, and he is the ancestor of the Moabites to this day.

38 And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; the same is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.

38 As for the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the (ah)sons of (AF)Ammon to this day.

38 And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

38 The younger also gave birth to a son, and she named him Ben-ammi.(l) He is the father of the Ammonites of today.(M)

38 The younger daughter also gave birth to a son and named him Ben-ammi, and he is the ancestor of the Ammonites to this day.
