The Fall

11 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, 'You shall not eat from any tree of the garden'?"

11 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

11 Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the wild animals that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You can't eat from any tree in the garden'?"

11 Now the Shining One was more clever than any animal of the field that the LORD God had made. He asked the woman, "Did God actually say, "You are not to eat from any tree of the garden'?"

11 Now the serpent was more subtle and crafty than any living creature of the field which the Lord God had made. And he [Satan] said to the woman, Can it really be that God has said, You shall not eat from every tree of the garden?

22 The woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;

22 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

22 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat the fruit from the trees in the garden.

22 "We may eat from the trees of the garden," the woman answered the Shining One,

22 And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat the fruit from the trees of the garden,

33 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, 'You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.'"

33 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

33 But about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden, God said, 'You must not eat it or touch it, or you will die.' "

33 "but as for the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, God has said, "You are not to eat from it, nor are you to touch it, or you will die.'"

33 Except the fruit from the tree which is in the middle of the garden. God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.

44 The serpent said to the woman, "You surely will not die!

44 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

44 "No! You will not die," the serpent said to the woman.

44 "You certainly will not die!" the Shining One told the woman.

44 But the serpent said to the woman, You shall not surely die,

55 "For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

55 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

55 "In fact, God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

55 "Even God knows that on the day you eat from it, your eyes will be opened and you'll become like God, knowing good and evil."

55 For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing the difference between good and evil and blessing and calamity.

66 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.

66 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

66 Then the woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate [it]; she also gave [some] to her husband, [who was] with her, and he ate [it].

66 When the woman saw that the tree produced good food, was attractive in appearance, and was desirable for making one wise, she took some of its fruit and ate it. Then she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate some, too.

66 And when the woman saw that the tree was good (suitable, pleasant) for food and that it was delightful to look at, and a tree to be desired in order to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she gave some also to her husband, and he ate.

77 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.

77 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

77 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

77 As a result, they both understood what they had done, and they became aware that they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

77 Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves apronlike girdles.

Sin's Consequences

88 They heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

88 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

88 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and they hid themselves from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

88 Whenthey heard the voice of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden during the breeze of the day, the man and his wife concealed themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

88 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

99 Then the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?"

99 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

99 So the Lord God called out to the man and said to him, "Where are you?"

99 So the LORD God called out to the man, asking him, "Where are you?"

99 But the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, Where are you?

1010 He said, "I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself."

1010 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

1010 And he said, "I heard You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid."

1010 "I heard your voice in the garden," the man answered, "and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid from you."

1010 He said, I heard the sound of You [walking] in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.

1111 And He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?"

1111 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

1111 Then He asked, "Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I had commanded you not to eat from?"

1111 "Who told you that you are naked?" Godasked. "Did you eat fruit from the tree that I commanded you not to eat?"

1111 And He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?

1212 The man said, "The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate."

1212 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

1212 Then the man replied, "The woman You gave to be with me-she gave me [some fruit] from the tree, and I ate."

1212 The man answered, "The woman whom you provided for me gave me fruit from the tree, and I ate some of it."

1212 And the man said, The woman whom You gave to be with me -- "she gave me [fruit] from the tree, and I ate.

1313 Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?" And the woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

1313 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

1313 So the Lord God asked the woman, "What is this you have done?" And the woman said, "It was the serpent. He deceived me, and I ate."

1313 Then the LORD God asked the woman, "What did you do?" "The Shining One misled me," the woman answered, "so I ate."

1313 And the Lord God said to the woman, What is this you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled (cheated, outwitted, and deceived) me, and I ate.

God Pronounces Judgment

1414 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life;

1414 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

1414 Then the Lord God said to the serpent: Because you have done this, you are cursed more than any livestock and more than any wild animal. You will move on your belly and eat dust all the days of your life.

1414 The LORD God told the Shining One, "Because you have done this, you are more cursed than all the livestock, and more than all the earth's animals, You'll crawl on your belly and eat dust as long as you live.

1414 And the Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, you are cursed above all [domestic] animals and above every [wild] living thing of the field; upon your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust [and what it contains] all the days of your life.

1515 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel."

1515 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

1515 I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.

1515 "I'll place hostility between you and the woman, between your offspring and her offspring. He'll strike you on the head, and you'll strike him on the heel."

1515 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her Offspring; He will bruise and tread your head underfoot, and you will lie in wait and bruise His heel.

1616 To the woman He said, "I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you."

1616 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

1616 He said to the woman: I will intensify your labor pains; you will bear children in anguish. Your desire will be for your husband, yet he will dominate you.

1616 He told the woman, "I'll greatly increase the pain of your labor during childbirth. It will be painful for you to bear children, "since your trust is turning toward your husband, and he will dominate you."

1616 To the woman He said, I will greatly multiply your grief and your suffering in pregnancy and the pangs of childbearing; with spasms of distress you will bring forth children. Yet your desire and craving will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.

1717 Then to Adam He said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat from it'; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life.

1717 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

1717 And He said to Adam, "Because you listened to your wife's voice and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'Do not eat from it': The ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life.

1717 He told the man, "Because you have listened to what your wife said, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, "You must not eat from it,' cursed is the ground because of you. You'll eat from it through pain-filled labor for the rest of your life.

1717 And to Adam He said, Because you have listened and given heed to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it, the ground is under a curse because of you; in sorrow and toil shall you eat [of the fruits] of it all the days of your life.

1818 "Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field;

1818 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

1818 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.

1818 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you'll eat the plants from the meadows.

1818 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field.

1919 By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return."

1919 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

1919 You will eat bread by the sweat of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were taken from it. For you are dust, and you will return to dust."

1919 You will eat food by the sweat of your brow until you're buried in the ground, because you were taken from it. You're made from dust and you'll return to dust."

1919 In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you shall return.

Paradise Lost: God's Judgment

2020 Now the man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living.

2020 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

2020 Adam named his wife Eve because she was the mother of all the living.

2020 Now Adam had named his wife "Eve," because she was to become the mother of everyone who was living.

2020 The man called his wife's name Eve [life spring], because she was the mother of all the living.

2121 The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

2121 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

2121 The Lord God made clothing out of skins for Adam and his wife, and He clothed them.

2121 The LORD God fashioned garments from animal skins for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.

2121 For Adam also and for his wife the Lord God made long coats (tunics) of skins and clothed them.

Adam And Eve Are Sent Out Of The Garden

2222 Then the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever"--

2222 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

2222 The Lord God said, "Since man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil, he must not reach out, and also take from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever."

2222 Later, the LORD God said, "Look! The man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, so he won't reach out, also take from the tree of life, eat, and then live forever "

2222 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man has become like one of Us [the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit], to know [how to distinguish between] good and evil and blessing and calamity; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever -- "

2323 therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken.

2323 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

2323 So the Lord God sent him away from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken.

2323 therefore the LORD God expelled the man from the garden of Eden so he would work the ground from which he had been taken.

2323 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.

2424 So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.

2424 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

2424 He drove man out, and east of the garden of Eden He stationed cherubim with a flaming, whirling sword to guard the way to the tree of life.

2424 After he had expelled the man, the LORD God placed winged angels at the eastern end of the garden of Eden, along with a fiery, turning sword, to prevent access to the tree of life.

2424 So [God] drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the Garden of Eden the cherubim and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep and guard the way to the tree of life.
