When he lifted up his eyes and looked, behold, three men were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth,

Jacob said, “No, please, if now I have found favor in your sight, then take my present from my hand, for I see your face as one sees the face of God, and you have received me favorably.

Now Joseph was the ruler over the land; he was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.

Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the best products of the land in your bags, and carry down to the man as a present, a little

balm and a little honey, aromatic gum and myrrh, pistachio nuts and almonds.

Now let this gift which your maidservant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who accompany my lord.

A bribe is a charm in the sight of its owner;
Wherever he turns, he prospers.

A man’s gift makes room for him
And brings him before great men.

Many will seek the favor of a generous man,

And every man is a friend to him who gives gifts.

A gift in secret subdues anger,
And a bribe in the bosom, strong wrath.
