Christ's One Sacrifice For Sin

1 For as the Law has a mere shadow of the bliss that is to be, instead of representing the reality of that bliss, it never can perfect those who draw near with the same annual sacrifices that are perpetually offered.

1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

1 For the Law, since it has only (A)a shadow of (B)the good things to come and not the very (a)form of things, (b)can (C)never, by the same sacrifices which they offer continually year by year, (D)make perfect those who draw near.

1 Since the law has only a shadow of the good things(A) to come, and not the actual form of those realities, it can never perfect the worshipers by the same sacrifices they continually offer year after year.

1 For the Law, being only a reflection of the blessings to come and not their substance, can never make perfect those who come near by the same sacrifices repeatedly offered year after year.

2 Otherwise, they would surely have ceased to be offered; for the worshippers, once cleansed, would no longer be conscious of sins!

2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have had (E)consciousness of sins?

2 Otherwise, wouldn’t they have stopped being offered, since the worshipers, once purified, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?

2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped offering them, because the worshipers, cleansed once for all, would no longer be aware of any sins?

3 As it is, they are an annual reminder of sins

3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

3 But (F)in (c)those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year.

3 But in the sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.

3 Instead, through those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year after year,

4 (for the blood of bulls and goats cannot possibly remove sins!).

4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

4 For it is (G)impossible for the (H)blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

4 for it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

5 Hence, on entering the world he says, Thou hast no desire for sacrifice or offering; it is a body thou hast prepared for me ??6 in holocausts and sin-offerings thou takest no delight.

5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

5 Therefore, (I)when He comes into the world, He says,(J)Sacrifice and offering You have not desired,But (K)a body You have prepared for Me;

5 Therefore, as He was coming into the world, He said:You did not want sacrifice and offering,but You prepared a body for Me.

5 For this reason, the Scriptures say, when the Messiah was about to come into the world: "You did not want sacrifices and offerings, but you prepared a body for me.

6 So I said, 'Here I come ??in the roll of the book this is written of me ??I come to do thy will, O God.'

6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.

6 (L)In whole burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin You have taken no pleasure.

6 You did not delightin whole burnt offerings and sin offerings.

6 In burnt offerings and sin offerings you never took delight.

7 He begins by saying, thou hast no desire for, thou takest no delight in, sacrifices and offerings and holocausts and sin-offerings (and these are what are offered in terms of the Law);

7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.

7 (M)Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come(In (N)the scroll of the book it is written of Me)To do Your will, O God.’”

7 Then I said, “See—it is written about Mein the volume of the scroll—I have come to do Your will, God!”(B)(a)

7 Then I said, "See, I have come to do your will, O God' In the volume of the scroll this is written about me."

8 he then adds, Here I come to do thy will. He does away with the first in order to establish the second.

8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;

8 After saying above, “(O)Sacrifices and offerings and (P)whole burnt offerings and sacrifices (Q)for sin You have not desired, nor have You taken pleasure in them” (which are offered according to the Law),

8 After He says above, You did not want or delight in sacrifices and offerings, whole burnt offerings and sin offerings (which are offered according to the law(C)),

8 In this passage he says, "You never wanted or took delight in sacrifices, offerings, burnt offerings, and sin offerings," which are offered according to the Law.

9 And it is by this will that we are consecrated, because Jesus Christ once for all has offered up his body.

9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.

9 then He (d)said, “(R)Behold, I have come to do Your will.” He takes away the first in order to establish the second.

9 He then says, See, I have come to do Your will.(b) He takes away the first to establish the second.

9 Then he says, "See, I have come to do your will." He takes away the first in order to establish the second.

10 Again, while every priest stands daily at his service, offering the same sacrifices repeatedly, sacrifices which never can take sins away ??12 He offered a single sacrifice for sins and then seated himself for all time at the right hand of God,

10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

10 By (e)this will we have been (S)sanctified through (T)the offering of (U)the body of Jesus Christ (V)once for all.

10 By this will of God, we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once and for all.(D)

10 By God's will we have been sanctified once and for all through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus, the Messiah.

11 to wait until his enemies are made a footstool for his feet.

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

11 Every priest stands daily ministering and (W)offering time after time the same sacrifices, which (X)can never take away sins;

11 Every priest stands day after day ministering and offering the same sacrifices time after time, which can never take away sins.(E)

11 Day after day every priest stands and repeatedly offers the same sacrifices that can never take away sins.

12 For by a single offering he has made the sanctified perfect for all time.

12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;

12 but He, having offered one sacrifice (Y)for (f)sins (Z)for all time, (AA)sat down at the right hand of God,

12 But this man, after offering one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God.(F)

12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, "he sat down at the right hand of God."

13 Besides, we have the testimony of the holy Spirit; for after saying,

13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

13 waiting from that time onward (AB)until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.

13 He is now waiting until His enemies are made His footstool.(G)

13 Since that time, he has been waiting for his enemies to be made a footstool for his feet.

14 This is the covenant I will make with them when that day comes, saith the Lord, I will set my laws upon their hearts, inscribing them upon their minds, he adds,

14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

14 For by one offering He has (AC)perfected (AD)for all time those who are (g)sanctified.

14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are sanctified.

14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

15 And their sins and breaches of the law I will remember no more.

15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,

15 And (AE)the Holy Spirit also testifies to us; for after saying,

15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. For after He says:

15 The Holy Spirit also assures us of this, for he said:

16 Now where these are remitted, an offering for sin exists no longer.

16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

16 (AF)This is the covenant that I will make with themAfter those days, says the Lord:I will put My laws upon their heart,And on their mind I will write them,”He then says,

16 This is the covenant I will make with themafter those days, says the Lord:I will put My laws on their heartsand write them on their minds,

16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts and will write them on their minds,

Hold Fast The Confession Of Our Hope

17 Brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy Presence in virtue of the blood of Jesus,

17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

17 (AG)And their sins and their lawless deedsI will remember no more.”

17 He adds:I will never again remembertheir sins and their lawless acts.(H)(c)

17 and I will never again remember their sins and their lawless deeds."

18 by the fresh, living way which he has inaugurated for us through the veil (that is, through his flesh),

18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

18 Now where there is forgiveness of these sins, there is no longer any offering for sin.

19 and since we have a great Priest over the house of God,

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,

19 Therefore, brethren, since we (AH)have confidence to (AI)enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus,

19 Therefore, brothers, since we have boldness to enter the sanctuary through the blood of Jesus,(I)

19 Therefore, my brothers, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus,

20 let us draw near with a true heart, in absolute assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from a bad conscience, and our bodies washed in pure water;

20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

20 by (AJ)a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through (AK)the veil, that is, His flesh,

20 by a new and living way He has opened for us through the curtain (that is, His flesh(J)),

20 the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh),

21 let us hold the hope we avow without wavering (for we can rely on him who gave us the Promise);

21 And having an high priest over the house of God;

21 and since we have (AL)a great priest (AM)over the house of God,

21 and since we have a great high priest over the house of God,(K)

21 and since we have a great high priest over the household of God,

Encourage Each Other

22 and let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good deeds ??25 not ceasing to meet together, as is the habit of some, but admonishing one another, all the more so, as you see the Day coming near.

22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

22 let us (AN)draw near with a (h)sincere heart in (AO)full assurance of faith, having our hearts (AP)sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies (AQ)washed with pure water.

22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.(L)

22 let us continue to come near with sincere hearts in the full assurance that faith provides, because our hearts have been sprinkled clean from a guilty conscience, and our bodies have been washed with pure water.

A Serious Warning Against Continuing Deliberate Sin

23 For if we sin deliberately, after receiving the knowledge of the Truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins left,

23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)

23 Let us hold fast the (AR)confession of our (AS)hope without wavering, for (AT)He who promised is faithful;

23 Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.(M)

23 Let us continue to hold firmly to the hope that we confess without wavering, for the one who made the promise is faithful.

24 nothing but an awful outlook of doom, of that burning Wrath which will consume the foes of God.

24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

24 and let us consider how (AU)to stimulate one another to love and (AV)good deeds,

24 And let us be concerned about one another in order to promote love and good works,

24 And let us continue to consider how to motivate one another to love and good deeds,

25 Anyone who has rejected the law of Moses dies without mercy, on the evidence of two or of three witnesses.

25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

25 not forsaking our own (AW)assembling together, as is the habit of some, but (AX)encouraging one another; and all the more as you see (AY)the day drawing near.

25 not staying away from our worship meetings, as some habitually do, but encouraging each other,(N) and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another even more as you see the day of the Lord coming nearer.

26 How much heavier, do you suppose, will be the punishment assigned to him who has spurned the Son of God, who has profaned the covenant-blood with which he was sanctified, who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,

26 For if we go on (AZ)sinning willfully after receiving (BA)the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

26 For if we deliberately sin after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,(O)

26 For if we choose to go on sinning after we have learned the full truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

27 We know who said, Vengeance is mine, I will exact a requital: and again, The Lord will pass sentence on his people.

27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

27 but a terrifying expectation of (BB)judgment and (BC)the fury of a fire which will consume the adversaries.

27 but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.(P)

27 but only a terrifying prospect of judgment and a raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

28 It is an awful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:

28 (BD)Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

28 If anyone disregards Moses’ law, he dies without mercy, based on the testimony of two or three witnesses.(Q)

28 Anyone who violates the Law of Moses dies without mercy "on the testimony of two or three witnesses."

29 Recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle of suffering,

29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

29 (BE)How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve (BF)who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean (BG)the blood of the covenant (BH)by which he was sanctified, and has (BI)insulted the Spirit of grace?

29 How much worse punishment do you think one will deserve who has trampled on the Son of God, regarded as profane(d) the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and insulted the Spirit of grace?(R)

29 How much more severe a punishment do you think that person deserves who tramples on God's Son, treats as common the blood of the covenant by which it was sanctified, and insults the Spirit of grace?

30 partly by being held up yourselves to obloquy and anguish, partly by making common cause with those who fared in this way;

30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.

30 For we know Him who said, “(BJ)Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “(BK)The Lord will judge His people.”

30 For we know the One who has said, Vengeance belongs to Me, I will repay,(e)(f) and again, The Lord will judge His people.(S)(g)

30 For we know the one who said, "Vengeance belongs to me; I will pay them back," and again, "The Lord will judge his people."

31 for you did sympathize with the prisoners, and you took the confiscation of your own belongings cheerfully, conscious that elsewhere you had higher, you had lasting, possessions.

31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

31 It is a (BL)terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the (BM)living God.

31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!(T)

31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God!

32 Now do not drop that confidence of yours; it carries with it a rich hope of reward.

32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;

32 But remember (BN)the former days, (i)when, after being (BO)enlightened, you endured a great (BP)conflict of sufferings,

32 Remember the earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings.(U)

32 But you must continue to remember those earlier days, how after you were enlightened you endured a hard and painful struggle.

33 Steady patience is what you need, so that after doing the will of God you may get what you have been promised.

33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of them that were so used.

33 partly by being (BQ)made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations, and partly by becoming (BR)sharers with those who were so treated.

33 Sometimes you were publicly exposed to taunts and afflictions, and at other times you were companions of those who were treated that way.(V)

33 At times you were made a public spectacle by means of insults and persecutions, while at other times you associated with people who were treated this way.

34 For in a little, a very little now, The Coming One will arrive without delay.

34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.

34 For you (BS)showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted (BT)joyfully the seizure of your property, knowing that you have for yourselves (BU)a better possession and a lasting one.

34 For you sympathized with the prisoners(h) and accepted with joy the confiscation of your possessions, knowing that you yourselves have a better and enduring possession.(i)(W)

34 For you sympathized with the prisoners and cheerfully submitted to the violent seizure of your property, because you know that you have a better and more permanent possession.

35 Meantime my just man shall live on by his faith; if he shrinks back, my soul takes no delight in him.

35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.

35 Therefore, do not throw away your (BV)confidence, which has a great (BW)reward.

35 So don’t throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.(X)

35 So don't lose your confidence, since it holds a great reward for you.

36 We are not the men to shrink back and be lost, but to have faith and so to win our souls.

36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

36 For you have need of (BX)endurance, so that when you have (BY)done the will of God, you may (BZ)receive (j)what was promised.

36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God’s will, you may receive what was promised.(Y)

36 For you need endurance, so that after you have done God's will you can receive what he has promised.
