The Rest That Remains For The People Of God

1 So, as long as God's promise of entering into a state of rest with Him [still] remains, we should fear that someone among you will appear [in the end] to have fallen short of [attaining] it. [Note: In this section "entering into rest" refers to Israel entering Canaan (verses 6, 8) and to Christians entering heaven (verses 3, 9). The "Sabbath day rest" is represented as a type of both].

1 Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have (A)come short of it.

1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

1 Therefore, while the promise to enter His rest remains, let us fear that none of you should miss it.(a)

1 Therefore, as long as the promise of entering his rest remains valid, let us be afraid! Otherwise, some of you will fail to reach it,

2 For we [Christians] have had the good news [about resting with God] preached to us, just as the Israelites [had good news proclaimed to them. See 1:16-19]. But the message they heard did not benefit them, because it was not coupled with faith by those who heard it.

2 For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but (B)the word (a)they heard did not profit them, because (b)it was not united by faith in those who heard.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

2 For we also have received the good news just as they did; but the message they heard did not benefit them, since they were not united with those who heard it in faith(b)(A)

2 because we have had the good news told to us as well as to them. But the message they heard did not help them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened to it.

3 Now we who have believed [will someday] enter that rest, even as God has said [Psa. 95:11], "So, I vowed in my anger, 'They will not enter a state of rest with me,'" although God's works were completed since the creation of the world.

3 For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said,(C)As I swore in My wrath,They shall not enter My rest,”although His works were finished (D)from the foundation of the world.

3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

3 (for we who have believed enter the rest), in keeping with what(c) He has said:So I swore in My anger,they will not enter My rest.(B)(d)And yet His works have been finished since the foundation of the world,

3 We who have believed are entering that rest, just as he has said, "So in my anger I swore a solemn oath that they would never enter my rest,"

4 For God said this somewhere about the seventh day [Gen. 2:2], "And on the seventh day God rested from all His work."

4 For He has said (E)somewhere concerning the seventh day: “(F)And God (G)rested on the seventh day from all His works”;

4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

4 for somewhere He has spoken about the seventh day in this way:And on the seventh dayGod rested from all His works.(C)(e)

4 even though his actions had been finished since the creation of the world. Somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day as follows: "On the seventh day God rested from all his actions,"

5 And again, this [is recorded, Psa. 95:11], "They will not enter a state of rest with me."

5 and again in this passage, “(H)They shall not enter My rest.”

5 And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest.

5 Again, in that passage He says, They will never enter My rest.(f)

5 and again in this passage, "They will never enter my rest."

6 So, since it still remains for some people to enter into that rest, but those to whom the good news was previously proclaimed [See verse 2] failed to enter it because of disobedience [See 3:18]

6 Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of (I)disobedience,

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:

6 Since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news did not enter because of disobedience,(D)

6 Therefore, since it is still true that some will enter it, and since those who once heard the good news failed to enter it because of their disobedience,

7 God again identified a certain day, [calling it] "Today," in David's [writings], a long time later (just as it was referred to above) [Psa. 95:7-8], "Today, if you hear His [i.e., God's] voice, do not have a stubborn heart."

7 He again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying (c)through David after so long a time just (J)as has been said before,(K)Today if you hear His voice,Do not harden your hearts.”

7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

7 again, He specifies a certain day—today—speaking through David after such a long time, as previously stated:Today, if you hear His voice,do not harden your hearts.(E)(g)

7 he again fixes a definite day "Today" - saying long afterward through David, as already quoted, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts."

8 For if Joshua had given the Israelites rest, God would not have spoken about another day later on [i.e., "Today" in Psa. 95:7].

8 For (L)if (d)Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that.

8 For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day.

8 For if Joshua(F) had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken later about another day.

9 [So] then, a Sabbath "rest day" [still] remains for God's people [i.e., for Christians, in heaven].

9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

9 Therefore, a Sabbath rest remains for God’s people.

9 There remains, therefore, a Sabbath rest for the people of God to keep,

10 For the person who has entered into a state of rest with God has rested from his own work also, just as God rested from His.

10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also (M)rested from his works, as (N)God did from His.

10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.

10 For the person who has entered His rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from His.(G)

10 because the one who enters God's rest has himself rested from his own actions, just as God did from his.

11 So, we should do our best to enter into that state of rest, so that no one fails [to do so] by following the same example of disobedience [i.e., as seen in the Israelites. See verses 2, 6].

11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same (O)example of (P)disobedience.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

11 Let us then make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience.

11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one may fail by following their example of disobedience.

12 For God's word is alive and active and sharper than any double-edged sword. It penetrates [deep enough] even to divide [a person's] soul [from his] spirit, and his joints [from his] bone marrow [Note: This is figurative language describing the penetrating effect of God's word into a person's spiritual, inner being] and is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of a person's heart.

12 For (Q)the word of God is (R)living and (S)active and sharper than any two-edged (T)sword, and piercing as far as the division of (U)soul and (V)spirit, of both joints and marrow, and (W)able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

12 For the word of God is living and effective(H) and sharper than any double-edged sword,(I) penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart.(J)

12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow, as it judges the thoughts and purposes of the heart.

13 And no created being is hidden from God's sight, but everything is laid bare and is openly visible to the eyes of God, to whom we must give account.

13 And (X)there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are (Y)open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

13 No creature is hidden from Him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom(K) we must give an account.

13 No creature can hide from him, but everyone is exposed and helpless before the eyes of the one to whom we must give a word of explanation.

Jesus Our Great High Priest

14 Since then we [Christians] have [such] a great Head Priest, who has passed through the skies [i.e., ascended to heaven. See Acts 1:9], Jesus, the Son of God, we should remain true to our profession [of faith in Him].

14 Therefore, since we have a great (Z)high priest who has (AA)passed through the heavens, Jesus (AB)the Son of God, let us hold fast our (AC)confession.

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to the confession.(L)

14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone to heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us live our lives consistent with our confession of faith.

15 For we do not have a head priest who is incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but One [i.e., Jesus] who has been tempted in every way that we have, and yet without sinning.

15 For we do not have (AD)a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been (AE)tempted in all things as we are, yet (AF)without sin.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tested in every way as we are,(M) yet without sin.(N)

15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses. Instead, we have one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet he never sinned.

16 So, we should approach, with confidence, God's throne of unearned favor, so we can receive mercy and obtain that favor to help us when we need it.

16 Therefore let us (AG)draw near with (AH)confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

16 Therefore let us approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the proper time.

16 So let us keep on coming boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
