Israel Is Punished

1 A luxuriant vine, is Israel, fruit, beseemeth him, - According to the abundance of his fruit, hath he brought abundance to the altars, according to the goodliness of his land, hath he made goodly statues.

1 Israel is a (a)luxuriant (A)vine;He produces fruit for himself.The more his fruit,The more altars he (B)made;The (b)richer his land,The better (c)he made the sacred (C)pillars.

1 Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself: according to the multitude of his fruit he hath increased the altars; according to the goodness of his land they have made goodly images.

1 Israel is a lush(a) vine;(A)it yields fruit for itself. The more his fruit increased, the more he increased the altars.(B)The better his land produced, the better they made the sacred pillars.(C)

1 "Israel, the overgrown vine, bears fruit like itself; the more fruitful they become, the more altars they build. The better the land, the more ornate the stone idols.

2 Hypocritical is their heart, Now, shall they be held guilty, - He, will break down their altars, he will destroy their statutes.

2 Their heart is (d)(D)faithless; Now they must bear their (E)guilt.(e)The Lord will (F)break down their altarsAnd destroy their sacred pillars.

2 Their heart is divided; now shall they be found faulty: he shall break down their altars, he shall spoil their images.

2 Their hearts are devious;(b)(D)now they must bear their guilt.(E)The Lord will break down their altars(F)and demolish their sacred pillars.

2 Their hearts are divided; from now on they are to be found guilty. God will tear down their altars, he will destroy their stone idols.

3 For, now, will they say, We have no king, - for we revere not Yahweh, and what could, a king, do for us?

3 Surely now they will say, “We have (G)no king,For we do not revere the Lord.As for the king, what can he do for us?”

3 For now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the LORD; what then should a king do to us?

3 In fact, they are now saying,“We have no king! For we do not fear the Lord.(G)What can a king do for us?”

3 From now on they will say, "We have no king, because we did not fear the LORD and what would a king do for us?'

4 They have spoken words, swearing falsely, in solemnizing a covenant, - therefore shall judgment, spring up like a poisonous plant, on the ridges of the field.

4 They speak mere words,(f)With (H)worthless oaths they make covenants; And (I)judgment sprouts like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.

4 They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springeth up as hemlock in the furrows of the field.

4 They speak mere words, taking false oaths while making covenants.(H)So lawsuits break outlike poisonous weeds in the furrows of a field.(I)

4 Their word is falsely given as they make their agreements; so judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of a field.

5 About the calves of Beth-aven, will the inhabitant of Samaria be concerned, - for the people thereof, have mourned over it, and, the ascetics thereof, who, over it, used to exult, shall mourn for the glory thereof, because it hath departed therefrom.

5 The inhabitants of Samaria will fearFor the (g)(J)calf of (K)Beth-aven.Indeed, its people will mourn for it,And its (L)idolatrous priests (h)will cry out over it,Over its (M)glory, since it has departed from it.

5 The inhabitants of Samaria shall fear because of the calves of Bethaven: for the people thereof shall mourn over it, and the priests thereof that rejoiced on it, for the glory thereof, because it is departed from it.

5 The residents of Samaria(J) will have anxietyover the calf(K) of Beth-aven.(L)Indeed, its idolatrous priests rejoiced over it;the people will mourn over it,over its glory.(M)It will certainly depart from them.

5 "The residents of Samaria will be terrified because of the cows of Beth-aven. Its people will mourn over Beth-aven, along with the priests who will mourn its glory, because that glory has departed.

6 Itself also, to Assyria, shall be borne along, as a present to a hostile king, - shame, shall Ephraim receive, that Israel, may be ashamed, of his own counsel.

6 The thing itself will be carried to (N)AssyriaAs tribute to (i)(O)King Jareb;Ephraim will (j)be (P)seized with shameAnd Israel will be ashamed of its (Q)own counsel.

6 It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to king Jareb: Ephraim shall receive shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his own counsel.

6 The calf itself will be taken to Assyria(N)as an offering to the great king.(c)(O)Ephraim will experience shame;(P)Israel will be ashamed of its counsel.(Q)

6 Indeed, that glory will be carried to Assyria it will become a present for an avenging king. Ephraim will be disgraced, and Israel will become ashamed of its decision.

7 Silenced is Samaria: her king, is as a chip on the face of the waters,

7 Samaria will be (R)cut off with her kingLike a stick on the surface of the water.

7 As for Samaria, her king is cut off as the foam upon the water.

7 Samaria’s king will disappear(d)(R)like foam(e) on the surface of the water.

7 Samaria's king will float away like driftwood on the surface of water.

8 So shall the high places of Aven, be destroyed, the sin of Israel, Thorn and prickle, shall come up on their altars, - Therefore shall they say to the mountains, Cover us, and to the hills, Fall on us.

8 Also the (S)high places of Aven, the (T)sin of Israel, will be destroyed;(U)Thorn and thistle will grow on their altars; Then they will (V)say to the mountains,“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”

8 The high places also of Aven, the sin of Israel, shall be destroyed: the thorn and the thistle shall come up on their altars; and they shall say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us.

8 The high places(S) of Aven, the sin of Israel,(T)will be destroyed;thorns and thistles will grow over their altars.(U)They will say to the mountains,(V) “Cover us!”and to the hills, “Fall on us!”(W)

8 Destroyed will be the high places of Aven, that are the sin of Israel. Both thorn and thistle will grow up over their altars. They will call out to the mountains, "Cover us!' and to the hills, "Fall on us!'

Israel's Defeat Because Of Sin

9 Beyond the days of Gibeah, hast thou sinned, O Israel: there, came they to a stand, the battle against the sons of perversity, touched them not in Gibeah.

9 From the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel; There they stand! Will not the battle against the sons of iniquity overtake them in Gibeah?

9 O Israel, thou hast sinned from the days of Gibeah: there they stood: the battle in Gibeah against the children of iniquity did not overtake them.

9 Israel, you have sinnedsince the days of Gibeah;(X)they have taken their stand there. Will not war against the unjustovertake them in Gibeah?

9 "From the time of Gibeah, you have sinned, Israel; There they took their stand; the battle at Gibeah could not subdue the lawless.

10 When I please, then will I chastise them, - and there shall be gathered together against them - peoples, they being harnessed to their two Iniquities;

10 When it is My (W)desire, I will (k)(X)chastise them; And (Y)the peoples will be gathered against themWhen they are bound for their double guilt.

10 It is in my desire that I should chastise them; and the people shall be gathered against them, when they shall bind themselves in their two furrows.

10 I will discipline(Y) them at My discretion;(Z)nations will be gathered against themto put them in bondage(f)for their two crimes.(AA)

10 When I'm ready, I will chasten them; and the people will gather against them, to imprison them for their two unrighteous acts."

Israel Is Like A Cow That Threshed Grain

11 But, Ephraim, shall be a heifer broken in, loving to tread out corn, when, I, have passed over upon her fair neck, - I will drive Ephraim, Judah, shall plow, Jacob, shall harrow to him.

11 Ephraim is a trained (Z)heifer that loves to thresh,But I will (AA)come over her fair neck with a yoke;I will harness Ephraim,Judah will plow, Jacob will harrow for himself.

11 And Ephraim is as an heifer that is taught, and loveth to tread out the corn; but I passed over upon her fair neck: I will make Ephraim to ride; Judah shall plow, and Jacob shall break his clods.

11 Ephraim is a well-trained calf(AB)that loves to thresh, but I will place a yoke on(g) her fine neck.(AC)I will harness Ephraim;(AD)Judah will plow;Jacob will do the final plowing.

11 "Ephraim, the well-trained heifer, loves to thresh grain, so I will spare her neck. I will turn Ephraim into a pack animal. Judah will pull the plow, and Jacob will turn up the fallow ground.

12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap ye at thc bidding of lovingkindness, furrow to yourselves the newly-ploughed soil, - then will be the time to seek Yahweh, until he come, that he may rain down righteousness for you.

12 (AB)Sow with a view to righteousness,Reap in accordance with (l)kindness;(AC)Break up your fallow ground,For it is time to (AD)seek the LordUntil He (AE)comes to (m)(AF)rain righteousness on you.

12 Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.

12 Sow righteousness for yourselves(AE)and reap faithful love;break up your unplowed ground.(AF)It is time to seek the Lord(AG)until He comes(AH) and sends righteousnesson you like the rain.(AI)

12 Sow in righteousness in your own interest, reap in gracious love, break up your own unprepared ground; It is now time to inquire of the LORD, until he comes to pour out righteousness for you.

13 Ye have plowed lawlessness, perversity, have ye reaped, ye have eaten the fruit of deception, - because thou didst trust in thy chariots, in the multitude of thy mighty men.

13 You have (AG)plowed wickedness, you have reaped injustice,You have eaten the fruit of (AH)lies.Because you have trusted in your way, in your (AI)numerous warriors,

13 Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity; ye have eaten the fruit of lies: because thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.

13 You have plowed wickedness and reaped injustice;(AJ)you have eaten the fruit of lies.(AK)Because you have trusted in your own way(h)and in your large number of soldiers,(AL)

13 You have plowed evil; you have reaped unrighteousness; you have eaten the fruit of hypocrisy; because you trusted in your own direction, and in the number of your mighty forces.

14 Therefore shall there arise a tumult among thy peoples, and, all thy fortresses, shall be plundered, as Shalman plundered Beth-arbel, in the day of battle, - the mother, upon her children, dashed to the ground.

14 Therefore a tumult will arise among your people,And all your (AJ)fortresses will be destroyed,As Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle,When (AK)mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.

14 Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children.

14 the roar of battle will rise against your people, and all your fortifications will be demolished(AM)in a day of war, like Shalman’s destruction of Beth-arbel.Mothers will be dashed to piecesalong with their children.(AN)

14 Therefore a disaster will come upon your people, and all of your fortresses will be ruined. As Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel in wartime, mothers were dashed to pieces along with their children.

15 Even so, hath Bethel, done to you, because of your exceeding wickedness, - in the dawn, shall the king of Israel be, utterly silenced.

15 Thus it will be done to you at Bethel because of your great wickedness. At dawn the king of Israel will be completely cut off.

15 So shall Bethel do unto you because of your great wickedness: in a morning shall the king of Israel utterly be cut off.

15 So it will be done to you, Bethel,(AO)because of your extreme evil.At dawn the king of Israel will be totally destroyed.

15 The same will happen to you, Bethel, because of your great evil early one morning the king of Israel will be totally silenced."
