The Unfaithful Wife
1 Say ye to your brethren, My people; and to your sisters, Being compassionated.
1 Say ye unto your brethren, Ammi; and to your sisters, Ruhamah.
1 "Call your mother to account, call her for she is not my wife, and I'm not her husband. Let her do away with her seductive looks and remove her adultery from between her breasts.
Israel's Adultery Rebuked
2 Contend with your mother, contend ye, for she is not my wife, and I not her husband: for she shall put away her fornications from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts;
2 Plead with your mother, plead: for she is not my wife, neither am I her husband: let her therefore put away her whoredoms out of her sight, and her adulteries from between her breasts;
2 “Contend with your mother, (A)contend,For she is (B)not my wife, and I am not her husband; And let her put away her (C)harlotry from her faceAnd her adultery from between her breasts,
2 Rebuke your mother; rebuke her.(A)For she is not My wife and I am not her husband.(B)Let her remove the promiscuous look from her face(C)and her adultery from between her breasts.
2 Otherwise, I'll strip her naked as she was on the day she was born make her like a wilderness, turn her into a parched land, and cause her to die of thirst.
3 Lest I shall strip her naked, and I set her as the day of her birth, and I set her as a desert, and I set her as a land of dryness, and I slew her with thirst
3 Lest I strip her naked, and set her as in the day that she was born, and make her as a wilderness, and set her like a dry land, and slay her with thirst.
3 Or I will strip her (D)nakedAnd expose her as on the (E)day when she was born.I will also (F)make her like a wilderness,Make her like desert landAnd slay her with (G)thirst.
3 Otherwise, I will strip her naked(D)and expose her as she was on the day of her birth.I will make her like a desert(E)and like a parched land, and I will let her die of thirst.(F)
3 Furthermore, I'll not show pity on her children, since they are children of prostitution.
4 And her sons I will not compassionate, for they are the sons of fornications
4 And I will not have mercy upon her children; for they be the children of whoredoms.
4 Indeed, their mother has committed prostitution the one who has been conceiving them has acted disgracefully when she said, "I'm going after my lovers, who provide me food and water, as well as my wool, my flax, my oil, and my wine.'
5 For their mother committed fornication: she conceiving them acted shamefully: for she said, I will go after those loving me giving me my bread and my water, my wool and my linen, mine oil and my drinks.
5 For their mother hath played the harlot: she that conceived them hath done shamefully: for she said, I will go after my lovers, that give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, mine oil and my drink.
5 “For their mother has (I)played the harlot; She who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, ‘(J)I will go after my lovers,Who (K)give me my bread and my water,My wool and my flax, my (L)oil and my drink.’
5 Yes, their mother is promiscuous;she conceived them and acted shamefully.(H)For she thought, “I will go after my lovers,(I)the men who give me my food and water,my wool and flax, my oil and drink.”(J)
5 "Look how I'm blocking her path with thorns and building a wall to hinder her, so she can't find her way.
6 Therefore, behold me hedging in thy way with thorns, and I walled a wall and she shall not find her beaten paths.
6 Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and make a wall, that she shall not find her paths.
6 “Therefore, behold, I will (M)hedge up (d)her way with (N)thorns,And I will build (e)a wall against her so that she cannot find her (O)paths.
6 Therefore, this is what I will do:I will block her(c) way(K) with thorns;(L)I will enclose her with a wall,so that she cannot find her paths.(M)
6 She will pursue her lovers, but she won't catch up with them. She will seek them, but she won't find them. Then she will say, "I'll go back and return to my first husband, because it was better for me then than now.'
7 And she pursued those loving her, and she shall not overtake them; and she sought them and she shall not find: and she said, I will go and turn back to my former husband, for it was well to me then more than now.
7 And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.
7 “She will (P)pursue her lovers, but she will not overtake them; And she will seek them, but will not find them. Then she will say, ‘(Q)I will go back to my (R)first husband,For it was (S)better for me then than now!’
7 She will pursue her lovers but not catch them;(N)she will seek them but not find them. Then she will think,“I will go back to my former husband,(O)for then it was better for me than now.”(P)
7 She didn't recognize that it was I who provided her grain, wine, and oil, and it was I who gave her silver, while they crafted gold for Baal.
8 And she knew not that I gave to her grain, and new wine, and new oil. and I multiplied silver to her, and gold they made for Baal.
8 For she did not know that I gave her corn, and wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they prepared for Baal.
8 “For she does (T)not know that it was (U)I who gave her the grain, the new wine and the oil,And lavished on her silver and gold,Which they (f)used for Baal.
8 She does not recognize(Q)that it is I who gave her the grain,(R)the new wine, and the oil.I lavished silver and gold on her, which they used for Baal.
8 "Therefore I'll return and take back my grain at harvest time and my new wine in its season. I'll take back my wool and my flax that was to have covered her nakedness.
9 For this I will turn back and take away my grain in its time, and my new wine in its appointment, and I took away my wool and my linen to cover her nakedness.
9 Therefore will I return, and take away my corn in the time thereof, and my wine in the season thereof, and will recover my wool and my flax given to cover her nakedness.
9 “Therefore, I will (V)take back My grain at (g)harvest timeAnd My new wine in its season.I will also take away My wool and My flaxGiven to cover her nakedness.
9 Therefore, I will take back My grain in its time(S)and My new wine in its season;I will take away My wool and linen, which were to cover her nakedness.
9 So now I'll reveal her lewdness to the eyes of her lovers, and no man will rescue her from my control.
10 And now will I uncover her wickedness before the eyes of those loving her, and a man shall not deliver her from my hand.
10 And now will I discover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and none shall deliver her out of mine hand.
10 “And then I will (W)uncover her lewdnessIn the sight of her lovers,And no one will rescue her out of My hand.
10 Now I will expose her shame(T)in the sight of her lovers, and no one will rescue her from My hands.
10 I'll put a stop to her mirth, along with her celebrations, her New Moons, her Sabbaths, and all of her festive assemblies.
11 And I caused all her rejoicing to cease, her festival and her new moon, and her Sabbath and all her appointment
11 I will also cause all her mirth to cease, her feast days, her new moons, and her sabbaths, and all her solemn feasts.
11 “I will also (X)put an end to all her gaiety,Her (Y)feasts, her (Z)new moons, her sabbathsAnd all her festal assemblies.
11 I will put an end to all her celebrations:(U)her feasts,(V) New Moons,(W) and Sabbaths—all her festivals.
11 I'll destroy her vines and her fig trees, about which she said, "These are the earnings that my lovers paid me. I'll make them grow into a forest, and the wild animals will eat from them.'
12 And I destroyed her vine and her fig tree, of which she said, They are wages to me which those loving me gave to me: and I set them for a forest, and the beasts of the field ate them.
12 And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees, whereof she hath said, These are my rewards that my lovers have given me: and I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.
12 “I will (AA)destroy her vines and fig trees,Of which she said, ‘These are my wagesWhich my lovers have given me.’And I will (AB)make them a forest,And the (AC)beasts of the field will devour them.
12 I will devastate her vines and fig trees.(X)She thinks that these are her wagesthat her lovers have given her.I will turn them into a thicket,(Y)and the wild animals will eat them.(Z)
12 I'll punish her for the time she has devoted to the Baals, to whom she burned incense, and for whom she put on her earrings and jewels so she could go after her lovers and forget me," declares the LORD.
13 And I reviewed upon her the days of the Baals, which she will burn incense to them, and she will be decked with her earring and her necklace, and she will go after those loving her, and she forget me, says Jehovah.
13 And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith the LORD.
13 “I will punish her for the (AD)days of the BaalsWhen she used to (h)(AE)offer sacrifices to themAnd (AF)adorn herself with her (i)earrings and jewelry,And follow her lovers, so that she (AG)forgot Me,” declares the Lord.
13 And I will punish her for the days of the Baals(AA)when she burned incense to them,(AB)put on her rings and jewelry,(AC)and went after her lovers, but forgot Me.(AD)This is the Lord’s declaration.
13 "Therefore, look! I will now allure her. I will make her go out to the wilderness, and will speak to her heart.
Israel's Adultery Forgiven
14 For this, behold, I entice her, and I caused her to go into the desert, and I spake to her heart.
14 Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak comfortably unto her.
14 “Therefore, behold, I will allure her,(AH)Bring her into the wildernessAnd speak (j)kindly to her.
14 Therefore, I am going to persuade her, lead her to the wilderness,(AE)and speak tenderly to her.(d)
14 There I will restore her vineyards to her, and the Valley of Achor will become a doorway to hope. There she will respond as she did in her youth, when she came up from Egypt."
15 And I gave to her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she was humbled there as the days of her youth and as the days of her coming up out of the land of Egypt
15 And I will give her her vineyards from thence, and the valley of Achor for a door of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.
15 “Then I will give her her (AI)vineyards from there,And (AJ)the valley of Achor as a door of hope. And she will (k)(AK)sing there as in the days of her youth,As in the (AL)day when she came up from the land of Egypt.
15 There I will give her vineyards back to her(AF)and make the Valley of Achor(e)(AG)into a gateway of hope. There she will respond as she didin the days of her youth,(AH)as in the day she came out of the land of Egypt.
15 "It will come about at that time," declares the LORD, "that you will address me as "My husband,' and you will no longer call me "My master'.
16 And it was in that day, says Jehovah, thou shalt call me, My husband; and thou shalt no more call to me, My Lord.
16 And it shall be at that day, saith the LORD, that thou shalt call me Ishi; and shalt call me no more Baali.
16 “It will come about in that day,” declares the Lord,“That you will call Me (l)(AM)IshiAnd will no longer call Me (m)Baali.
16 In that day—this is the Lord’s declaration—you will call Me, “My husband,”(AI)and no longer call Me, “My Baal.”(f)
16 I will remove the names of the Baals from her vocabulary they will not be remembered by their names anymore.
17 And I put away the names of the Baals out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name.
17 For I will take away the names of Baalim out of her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name.
17 “For (AN)I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth,So that they will be (n)mentioned by their names no more.
17 For I will remove the names of the Baalsfrom her mouth;they will no longer be remembered by their names.
17 I will make a covenant with them at that time, a covenant with the wild animals of the field, with the birds of the air, and with the creatures of the ground. I will banish the battle bow, the sword, and war from the earth. I will cause my people to lie down where it is safe.
18 And I cut out for them a covenant in that day with the beasts of the field, and with the birds of the heavens, and the creeping things of the earth: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the land, and I caused them to lie down confidently.
18 And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth, and will make them to lie down safely.
