The Judgment On The Earth

1 Behold, the Lord (a)lays waste to the earth, devastates it, twists and distorts its face and scatters its inhabitants.

1 Behold, the Lord (A)lays the earth waste, devastates it, distorts its surface and scatters its inhabitants.

1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.

1 Look, the Lord is stripping the earth bareand making it desolate. He will twist its surface and scatter its inhabitants:

1 "Watch out! The LORD is about to depopulate the land and devastate it; he will turn it upside down and scatter its inhabitants.

2 And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the maid like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the creditor like the debtor [as God’s impartial judgment of sin comes on all].

2 And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the maid like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the (B)creditor like the debtor.

2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.

2 people and priest alike, servant and master, female servant and mistress, buyer and seller, lender and borrower, creditor and debtor.

2 It will be the same for the lay people as for priests, the same for servants as for their masters, for female servants as for their mistresses, for buyers as for sellers, for lenders as for borrowers, and for creditors as for debtors.

3 The earth will be completely laid waste and utterly pillaged, for the Lord has spoken this word.

3 The earth will be completely laid waste and completely despoiled, for the Lord has spoken this word.

3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.

3 The earth will be stripped completely bareand will be totally plundered, for the Lord has spoken this message.(A)

3 The earth will be utterly depopulated and completely laid waste for the LORD has spoken this message.

4 The earth dries up and crumbles away, the world dries out and crumbles away, the exalted of the people of the earth fade away.

4 The (C)earth mourns and withers, the world fades and withers, the (D)exalted of the people of the earth fade away.

4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.

4 The earth mourns and withers;the world wastes away and withers;the exalted people of the earth waste away.

4 "The earth dries up and withers; the world languishes and fades away; heaven fades away, along with the earth.

5 The earth also is polluted (b)by its inhabitants, because they have transgressed laws, violated statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.(A)

5 The earth is also (E)polluted (a)by its inhabitants, for they transgressed laws, violated statutes, (F)broke the everlasting covenant.

5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.

5 The earth is polluted by its inhabitants,(B)for they have transgressed teachings, overstepped decrees, and broken the everlasting covenant.(C)

5 The earth lies defiled beneath its inhabitants; because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant.

6 Therefore, a curse devours the earth, and those who live on it suffer the punishment of their guilt. Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are burned [under the curse of God’s wrath], and few people are left.(B)

6 Therefore, a (G)curse devours the earth, and those who live in it are held guilty. Therefore, the (H)inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men are left.

6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

6 Therefore a curse has consumed the earth,(D)and its inhabitants have become guilty;the earth’s inhabitants have been burned, and only a few survive.

6 Therefore the curse keeps on consuming, and its inhabitants are declared guilty. Furthermore, the inhabitants of earth are ablaze, and few people are left.

7 The new wine mourns,The vine decays; All the merry-hearted sigh and groan.

7 The (I)new wine mourns,The vine decays,All the merry-hearted sigh.

7 The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh.

7 The new wine mourns;(E)the vine withers. All the carousers now groan.

7 The new wine evaporates; the vine and the oil dry up; all the merrymakers groan.

8 The mirth of the timbrels (tambourines) ceases,The noise of those who rejoice ends,The joy of the harp ceases.

8 The (J)gaiety of tambourines ceases,The noise of revelers stops,The gaiety of the harp ceases.

8 The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.

8 The joyful tambourines(F) have ceased. The noise of the jubilant has stopped. The joyful lyre has ceased.

8 "The celebrations of the tambourine have ended, the noise of the jubilant has stopped, and the mirth that the harp produces has ended.

9 They do not drink wine with a song;Strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.

9 They do not drink wine with song;(K)Strong drink is (L)bitter to those who drink it.

9 They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.

9 They no longer sing and drink wine;beer is bitter to those who drink it.

9 No longer do they drink wine accompanied by singing; even beer tastes bitter to those who drink it.

10 The city of chaos is broken down;Every house is shut up so that no one may enter.

10 The (M)city of chaos is broken down;(N)Every house is shut up so that none may enter.

10 The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.

10 The city of chaos is shattered;(G)every house is closed to entry.(H)

10 The chaotic city lies broken down; every house is closed up so that no one can enter them.

11 There is an outcry in the streets concerning the wine; All jubilation is darkened,The joy of the earth is banished.

11 There is an (O)outcry in the streets concerning the wine;(P)All joy (b)turns to gloom. The gaiety of the earth is banished.

11 There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.

11 In the streets they cry(a) for wine. All joy grows dark;earth’s rejoicing goes into exile.

11 There is an outcry in the streets over wine; all cheer turns to gloom; the fun times of the earth are banished.

12 Horrible desolation is left in the city,And the gate is battered into ruins.

12 Desolation is left in the cityAnd the (Q)gate is battered to ruins.

12 In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.

12 Only desolation remains in the city;its gate has collapsed in ruins.

12 Desolation remains in the city whose gates lie battered into ruins.

13 For so it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,As the shaking of an olive tree,As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over [and only a little of the fruit remains].

13 For (R)thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,As the (c)shaking of an olive tree,As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over.

13 When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.

13 For this is how it will be on earthamong the nations:like a harvested olive tree, like a gleaning after a grape harvest.(I)

13 So it will be on the earth and among the nations as when an olive tree is beaten, or as gleanings when the grape harvest has ended."

14 They [who have escaped and remain] raise their voices, they shout for joy; They rejoice from the [Mediterranean] Sea in the majesty of the Lord.

14 (S)They raise their voices, they shout for joy; They cry out from the (d)west concerning the majesty of the Lord.

14 They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea.

14 They raise their voices, they sing out;they proclaim in the westthe majesty of the Lord.

14 "They raise their voices; they shout for joy; from the west they shout aloud over the LORD's majesty.

15 Therefore honor and glorify the Lord in the east [in the region of light],The name of the Lord, the God of Israel [honor His name],In the coastlands and islands of the [Mediterranean] Sea.

15 Therefore (T)glorify the Lord in the (e)east,The (U)name of the Lord, the God of Israel,In the (f)(V)coastlands of the sea.

15 Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea.

15 Therefore, in the east honor the Lord!In the islands of the westhonor the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.

15 Therefore, you in the east, give glory to the LORD! You in the coastlands of the sea, give glory to the name of the LORD God of Israel!

16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs, “Glory and honor to the Righteous One,”But I say, “I waste away, I waste away. Woe to me!The treacherous deal treacherously,Indeed, the treacherous deal very treacherously.”

16 From the (W)ends of the earth we hear songs, “(X)Glory to the Righteous One,”But I say, “(g)(Y)Woe to me! (h)Woe to me! Alas for me!The (Z)treacherous deal treacherously,And the treacherous deal very treacherously.”

16 From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.

16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs:The Splendor of the Righteous One.(J)But I said, “I waste away! I waste away!(b)Woe is me.”The treacherous act treacherously;the treacherous deal very treacherously.(K)

16 From the ends of the earth we hear songs of praise: "Glory to the Righteous One!' "But I say, "I am pining away, I'm pining away. How terrible things are for me! For treacherous people betray treacherous people are betraying with treachery!'"

17 Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth.

17 Panic, pit, and trap await you(L)who dwell on the earth.(M)

17 "Terror and pit and snare are coming in your direction, you inhabitants of the earth!

18 Then it will be that he who flees at the sound of terror will fall into the pit,And he who comes up out of the pit will be caught in the snare; For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.

18 Then it will be that he who flees the (j)report of disaster will fall into the pit,And he who (k)climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare; For the (AB)windows (l)above are opened, and the (AC)foundations of the earth shake.

18 And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.

18 Whoever flees at the sound of panicwill fall into a pit,and whoever escapes from the pitwill be caught in a trap. For the windows are opened from heaven,(N)and the foundations of the earth are shaken.(O)

18 Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare. For the windows of judgment from above are opened, and the foundations of the earth are shaken.

19 The earth is broken completely apart,The earth is split apart,The earth is shaken violently.

19 (AD)The earth is broken asunder,The earth is (AE)split through,The earth is shaken violently.

19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.

19 The earth is utterly shattered, the earth is split apart, the earth is violently shaken.

20 The earth reels back and forth like a drunkardAnd sways like a shack; Its transgression lies heavily upon it,And it will fall and not rise again.

20 The earth (AF)reels to and fro like a drunkardAnd it totters like a (m)shack,For its (AG)transgression is heavy upon it,And it will fall, (AH)never to rise again.

20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

20 The earth staggers like a drunkard(P)and sways like a hut.Earth’s rebellion weighs it down, and it falls, never to rise again.

20 The earth reels to and fro like a drunkard; it sways like a hut; its transgression lies so heavy upon it, that it falls, never to rise again.

21 So it will happen in that dayThat the Lord will visit and punish the host (fallen angels) of heaven on high,And the kings of the earth on the earth.(C)

21 So it will happen in that day,That the Lord will (AI)punish the host of (n)heaven on high,And the (AJ)kings of the earth on earth.

21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

21 "And it will come about at that time, the LORD will punish the armies of the exalted ones in the heavens, and the rulers of the earth on earth.

22 They will be gathered togetherAs prisoners [are gathered] in a dungeon; They will be shut up in prison,And after many days they will be visited and punished.(D)

22 They will be gathered togetherLike (AK)prisoners in the (o)dungeon,And will be confined in prison; And after many days they will (AL)be punished.

22 They will be herded together into the Pit; they will be shut up in prison, and after many days they will be punished.

23 Then the full moon will be embarrassed and the sun ashamed,For the Lord of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,And His glory and brilliance will shine before His elders.

23 Then the (AM)moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed,For the (AN)Lord of hosts will reign on (AO)Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,And His glory will be before His elders.
