Jeremiah's Counsel Rejected

1 Jeremiah finished telling all the people all these things the Lord their God had sent him to tell them.

1 But as soon as Jeremiah, whom the Lord their God had sent, had (A)finished telling all the people all the words of the Lord their God—that is, all these words—

1 And it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking unto all the people all the words of the LORD their God, for which the LORD their God had sent him to them, even all these words,

1 When Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of the Lord their God—all these words the Lord their God had sent him to give them—

1 When Jeremiah had finished telling all the people all the words that the LORD their God had sent him to tell them that is, all these words

2 Then Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and other arrogant men said to Jeremiah, "You are telling a lie! The Lord our God did not send you to tell us, 'You must not go to Egypt and settle there.'

2 Azariah the (B)son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men said to Jeremiah, “You are (C)telling a lie! The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘You are not to enter Egypt to reside there’;

2 Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: the LORD our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there:

2 then Azariah(a) son of Hoshaiah,(A) Johanan son of Kareah, and all the other arrogant men responded to Jeremiah, “You are speaking a lie! The Lord our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to live there for a while!’

2 Hoshaiah's son Azariah, Kareah's son Johanan, and all the arrogant men told Jeremiah, "You're lying! The LORD our God didn't send you to say, "Don't go to Egypt to settle there.'

3 But Baruch son of Neriah is stirring you up against us. He wants to hand us over to the Babylonians so that they will kill us or carry us off into exile in Babylon."

3 but (D)Baruch the son of Neriah is inciting you against us to give us over into the hand of the Chaldeans, so they will put us to death or exile us to Babylon.”

3 But Baruch the son of Neriah setteth thee on against us, for to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry us away captives into Babylon.

3 Rather, Baruch son of Neriah is inciting you against us to hand us over to the Chaldeans to put us to death or to deport us to Babylon!”

3 Indeed, Neriah's son Baruch is inciting you against us in order to give us into the hands of the Chaldeans, to kill us, or to take us into exile to Babylon."

4 So Johanan son of Kareah, all the army officers, and all the rest of the people did not obey the Lord's command to stay in the land.

4 So (E)Johanan the son of Kareah and all the (a)commanders of the forces, and all the people, (F)did not obey the voice of the Lord to (G)stay in the land of Judah.

4 So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the LORD, to dwell in the land of Judah.

4 So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies did not obey the voice of the Lord to stay in the land of Judah.

4 So Kareah's son Johanan, all the military leaders, and all the people did not obey the instructions given by the LORD to remain in the land of Judah.

5 Instead Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers led off all the Judean remnant who had come back to live in the land of Judah from all the nations where they had been scattered.

5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the (b)commanders of the forces took the (H)entire remnant of Judah who had returned from all the nations to which they had been driven away, in order to reside in the land of Judah—

5 But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, that were returned from all nations, whither they had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah;

5 Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies took the whole remnant of Judah,(B) those who had returned from all the nations where they had been banished to live in the land of Judah for a while—

5 Kareah's son Johanan and all the military leaders took the entire remnant of Judah that had returned from all the nations where they had been scattered to settle in the land of Judah

6 They also led off all the men, women, children, and royal princesses that Nebuzaradan, the captain of the royal guard, had left with Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan. This included the prophet Jeremiah and Baruch son of Neriah.

6 the men, the women, the (c)children, the (I)king’s daughters and (J)every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam (d)and grandson of Shaphan, together with (K)Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah—

6 Even men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah.

6 the men, women, children, king’s daughters, and everyone whom Nebuzaradan, captain of the guard, had allowed to remain with Gedaliah son of Ahikam son of Shaphan,(C) along with Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah—

6 the young men, the women, the children, the daughters of the king, and everyone whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Ahikam's son Gedaliah, the grandson of Shaphan, along with Jeremiah the prophet and Neriah's son Baruch.

7 They went on to Egypt because they refused to obey the Lord, and came to Tahpanhes.

7 and they entered the land of Egypt (for they did not obey the voice of the Lord) and went in as far as (L)Tahpanhes.

7 So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: thus came they even to Tahpanhes.

7 and they went to the land of Egypt because they did not obey the voice of the Lord. They went as far as Tahpanhes.(D)

7 So they went into the land of Egypt, because they did not obey the LORD, and they travelled as far as Tahpanhes.

The Throne Of Nebuchadnezzar Will Be Set Up At Tahpanhes

8 At Tahpanhes the Lord spoke to Jeremiah.

8 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah in (M)Tahpanhes, saying,

8 Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

8 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah at Tahpanhes:

8 Then this message from the LORD came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes:

9 "Take some large stones and bury them in the mortar of the clay pavement at the entrance of Pharaoh's residence here in Tahpanhes. Do it while the people of Judah present there are watching.

9 “Take some large stones in your (e)hands and hide them in the mortar in the (f)brick terrace which is at the entrance of Pharaoh’s (g)palace in Tahpanhes, in the sight of (h)some of the Jews;

9 Take great stones in thine hand, and hide them in the clay in the brickkiln, which is at the entry of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah;

9 “Pick up some large stones and set them in the mortar of the brick pavement that is at the opening of Pharaoh’s palace at Tahpanhes. Do this in the sight of the Judean men

9 "Take large stones in your hands, and, in the sight of the men of Judah, bury them in the mortar of the brickwork at the entrance of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes.

10 Then tell them, 'The Lord God of Israel who rules over all says, "I will bring my servant King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. I will set his throne over these stones which I have buried. He will pitch his royal tent over them.

10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am going to send and get (N)Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, (O)My servant, and I am going to set his throne right over these stones that I have hidden; and he will spread his (P)canopy over them.

10 And say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hid; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.

10 and tell them: This is what the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I will send for My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I will place his throne on these stones that I have embedded, and he will pitch his pavilion over them.

10 Then say to them, "This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel, says: "I'm going to send for my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. I'll take him and set his throne over these stones that I've buried, and he will spread his canopy over them.

11 He will come and attack Egypt. Those who are destined to die of disease will die of disease. Those who are destined to be carried off into exile will be carried off into exile. Those who are destined to die in war will die in war.

11 He will also come and (Q)strike the land of Egypt; those who are meant for death will be given over to death, and those for captivity to captivity, and (R)those for the sword to the sword.

11 And when he cometh, he shall smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity; and such as are for the sword to the sword.

11 He will come and strike down the land of Egypt(E)—those destined for death, to death; those destined for captivity, to captivity; and those destined for the sword,(F) to the sword.

11 He will come and attack the land of Egypt those meant for death will be put to death, those meant for captivity will be taken captive, and those meant for the sword will be put to the sword.

12 He will set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt. He will burn their gods or carry them off as captives. He will pick Egypt clean like a shepherd picks the lice from his clothing. He will leave there unharmed.

12 And (i)I shall set fire to the temples of the (S)gods of Egypt, and he will burn them and take them captive. So he will (T)wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself with his garment, and he will depart from there safely.

12 And I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away captives: and he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go forth from thence in peace.

12 I(b) will kindle a fire in the temples of Egypt’s gods,(G) and he will burn them and take them prisoner. He will clean the land of Egypt as a shepherd picks lice off(c) his garment,(H) and he will leave there unscathed.

12 He will set fire to the temples of the gods of Egypt. He will burn their idols and take them captive. He will wrap himself with the land of Egypt like a shepherd wraps himself with a garment, and then he will leave from there in peace.

13 He will demolish the sacred pillars in the temple of the sun in Egypt and will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt."'"

13 He will also shatter the (j)obelisks of (k)Heliopolis, which is in the land of Egypt; and the temples of the gods of Egypt he will burn with fire.”’”

13 He shall break also the images of Bethshemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire.

13 He will smash the sacred pillars of the sun temple(d)(e) in the land of Egypt and burn down the temples of the Egyptian gods.”

13 He will shatter the pillars of Heliopolis in the land of Egypt and will burn the temples of the gods of Egypt with fire."'"
