Prophecies Against Egypt

2 Concerning Egypt, against the army of Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates at Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon (a)defeated [decisively] in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:(A)

2 To (B)Egypt, concerning the army of (C)Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the Euphrates River at (D)Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the (E)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

2 Against Egypt, against the army of Pharaohnecho king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah.

2 About Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco, Egypt’s king,(B) which was defeated at Carchemish(C) on the Euphrates River by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of Judah’s King Jehoiakim son of Josiah:(D)

2 To Egypt: Concerning the army of King Pharaoh Neco of Egypt, which was encamped by the Euphrates River at Carchemish and which King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon defeated in the fourth year of the reign of Josiah's son Jehoiakim, king of Judah.

3 “Line up the (b)buckler (small shield) and [large] shield,And advance for battle!

3 (F)Line up the shield and (a)buckler,And draw near for the battle!

3 Order ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.

3 Deploy small shields(E) and large;draw near for battle!

3 "Prepare buckler and shield, and advance into the battle!

4 “Harness the horses,And mount, you riders!Take your stand with your helmets!Polish the spears,Put on the coats of mail!

4 “Harness the horses,And (b)mount the steeds,And take your stand with helmets on!(G)Polish the spears,Put on the (H)scale-armor!

4 Harness the horses; and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines.

4 Harness the horses! Riders, mount up! Take your positions with your helmets! Polish lances, and put on armor!

5 “Why have I seen it?They are terrifiedAnd have turned back,And their warriors are beaten down.They take flight in hasteWithout looking back;Terror is on every side!”Says the Lord.(B)

5 “Why have I seen it?They are terrified,They are (I)drawing back,And their (J)mighty men are defeatedAnd have taken refuge in flight,Without facing back;(c)(K)Terror is on every side!”Declares the Lord.

5 Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD.

5 Why have I seen this?They are terrified,they are retreating,their warriors are crushed,they flee headlong,they never look back,terror is on every side!(G)This is the Lord’s declaration.

5 Why am I seeing this? They're terrified, they have turned back. Their warriors are crushed, and they take flight. They don't look back. Terror is on every side," declares the LORD.

6 Do not let the swift man run,Nor the mighty man escape;In the north by the river EuphratesThey have stumbled and fallen.

6 Let not the (L)swift man flee,Nor the mighty man escape;In the north beside the river EuphratesThey have (M)stumbled and fallen.

6 Let not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape; they shall stumble, and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates.

6 The swift cannot flee,and the warrior cannot escape!In the north by the bank of the Euphrates River,they stumble and fall.(H)

6 "The swift cannot flee, nor can the strong escape. In the north, beside the Euphrates River, they stumble and fall.

7 Who is this that rises up like the Nile [River],Like the rivers [in the delta of Egypt] whose waters surge about?

7 Who is this that (N)rises like the Nile,Like the rivers whose waters surge about?

7 Who is this that cometh up as a flood, whose waters are moved as the rivers?

7 Who is this, rising like the Nile,(I)like rivers whose waters churn?

7 Who is this, rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge?

8 Egypt rises like the Nile,Even like the rivers whose waters surge about.And (c)He has said, “I will rise, I will cover that land;I will certainly destroy the city and its inhabitants.”

8 Egypt rises like the Nile,Even like the rivers whose waters surge about;And He has said, “I will (O)rise and cover that land;I will surely (P)destroy the city and its inhabitants.”

8 Egypt riseth up like a flood, and his waters are moved like the rivers; and he saith, I will go up, and will cover the earth; I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof.

8 Egypt rises like the Nile,and its waters churn like rivers.He boasts, “I will go up, I will cover the earth;I will destroy cities with their residents.”

8 Egypt is rising like the Nile, like rivers whose waters surge. He says, "I'll rise and cover the land. I'll destroy the city and its inhabitants.'

9 Charge, you horses,And drive like madmen, you chariots!Let the warriors go forward:Ethiopia and Put (Libya) who handle the shield,And the Lydians who handle and bend the bow.

9 Go up, you horses, and (d)(Q)drive madly, you chariots,That the mighty men may (e)march forward:Ethiopia and (f)(R)Put, that handle the shield,And the (g)(S)Lydians, that handle and bend the bow.

9 Come up, ye horses; and rage, ye chariots; and let the mighty men come forth; the Ethiopians and the Libyans, that handle the shield; and the Lydians, that handle and bend the bow.

9 Rise up, you cavalry!Race furiously, you chariots!Let the warriors go out—Cush and Put,(J)who are able to handle shields,and the Ludim,(K)who are able to handle and string the bow.(L)

9 Horses, get up! Chariots, drive furiously! Let the warriors go forward, Ethiopia and Put, who carry shields, and the Lydians who handle and bend the bow.

10 For that day belongs to the Lord God of hosts,A day of vengeance, that He may avenge Himself on His adversaries.And the sword will devour and be satiatedAnd drink its fill of their blood;For the Lord God of hosts has a sacrifice [like that of a great sin offering]In the north country by the river Euphrates.

10 For (T)that day belongs to the Lord (h)God of hosts,A day of (U)vengeance, so as to avenge Himself on His foes;And the (V)sword will devour and be satiatedAnd (i)drink its fill of their blood;For there will be a (W)slaughter for the Lord (j)God of hosts,In the land of the north by the river Euphrates.

10 For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.

10 That day belongs to the Lord, the God of Hosts,a day of vengeance to avenge Himselfagainst His adversaries.The sword will devour and be satisfied;it will drink its fill of their blood,because it will be a sacrifice(M) to the Lord, the God of Hosts,in the northern land by the Euphrates River.

10 That day belongs to the LORD of the Heavenly Armies. It is a day of vengeance to take vengeance on his foes. The sword will devour and be satisfied, and will drink its fill of their blood. For the Lord GOD of the Heavenly Armies will hold a sacrifice in the land of the north, by the Euphrates river.

11 Go up to Gilead and obtain [healing] balm,O Virgin Daughter of Egypt!In vain you use many medicines;For you there is no healing or remedy.

11 Go (X)up to Gilead and obtain balm,(Y)O virgin daughter of Egypt!In vain have you multiplied (k)remedies;There is (Z)no healing for you.

11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; for thou shalt not be cured.

11 Go up to Gilead and get balm,(N)Virgin Daughter Egypt!You have multiplied remedies in vain;there is no healing for you.

11 Go up to Gilead and get balm, virgin daughter of Egypt! In vain you multiply remedies, but there is no healing for you.

12 The nations have heard of your disgrace and shame,And your cry [of distress] has filled the earth.For warrior has stumbled against warrior,And both of them have fallen together.

12 The nations have heard of your (AA)shame,And the earth is full of your (AB)cry of distress;For one (AC)warrior has stumbled over (l)another,And both of them have fallen down together.

12 The nations have heard of thy shame, and thy cry hath filled the land: for the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty, and they are fallen both together.

12 The nations have heard of your dishonor,(O)and your outcry fills the earth,because warrior stumbles against warriorand together both of them have fallen.

12 The nations have heard of your disgrace, and your cry of distress fills the earth. Indeed, one warrior stumbles over another, and both of them fall down together."

The Coming Of Nebuchadnezzar

13 The word that the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to strike the land of Egypt:

13 This is the (m)message which the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the (AD)coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to (AE)smite the land of Egypt:

13 The word that the LORD spake to Jeremiah the prophet, how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.

13 This is the word the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to defeat the land of Egypt:(P)

13 This is the message that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the coming of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon to conquer the land of Egypt.

14 “Declare in Egypt and proclaim in (d)Migdol,And proclaim in (e)Memphis and in Tahpanhes;Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,For the sword has devoured those around you.’

14 “Declare in Egypt and proclaim in (AF)Migdol,Proclaim also in Memphis and (AG)Tahpanhes;Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,For the (AH)sword has devoured those around you.’

14 Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes: say ye, Stand fast, and prepare thee; for the sword shall devour round about thee.

14 Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol!(Q)Proclaim it in Memphis and in Tahpanhes!Say: Take positions! Prepare yourself,for the sword devours all around you.(R)

14 "Announce in Egypt, proclaim in Migdol. Proclaim also in Memphis and Tahpanhes. Say, "Take your positions and be ready, for the sword will devour all around you.'

15 “Why have your strong ones been cut down?They do not stand because the Lord drove them away.

15 “Why have your (AI)mighty ones become prostrate?They do not stand because the Lord has (AJ)thrust them down.

15 Why are thy valiant men swept away? they stood not, because the LORD did drive them.

15 Why have your strong ones been swept away?Each has not stood,for the Lord has thrust him down.

15 Why are your warriors prostrate? They don't stand because the LORD has brought them down.

16 “He will make many stumble and fall;Yes, they have fallen one on another.Then they said, ‘Arise, and let us go backTo our own people and to the land of our birth,Away from the sword of the oppressor.’

16 “They have repeatedly (AK)stumbled;Indeed, they have fallen one against another.Then they said, ‘Get up! And (AL)let us go backTo our own people and our native landAway from the (n)(AM)sword of the oppressor.’

16 He made many to fall, yea, one fell upon another: and they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword.

16 He continues to stumble.(S)Indeed, each falls over the other.They say, “Get up! Let’s return to our peopleand to the land of our birth,away from the sword that oppresses.”(T)

16 They repeatedly stumble and fall. They say to each other, "Get up! Let's go back to our people and to the land of our birth, away from the oppressor's sword.'

17 “They cried there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is destroyed and is merely a loud noise;He has let the appointed time [of opportunity] pass by!’

17 (o)They cried there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but (AN)a big noise;He has let the appointed time pass by!’

17 They did cry there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he hath passed the time appointed.

17 There they will cry out,“Pharaoh king of Egypt was all noise;he let the opportune moment pass.”

17 There they'll cry out, "Pharaoh, king of Egypt, is just a big noise. He has let the appointed time pass by.'

18 “As I live,” says the King,Whose name is the Lord of hosts,“Surely like (f)Tabor among the mountainsOr like Carmel by the sea,So shall he [the great king of Babylon] come.

18 “As I live,” declares the (AO)KingWhose name is the Lord of hosts,“Surely one shall come who looms up like (AP)Tabor among the mountains,Or like (AQ)Carmel by the sea.

18 As I live, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts, Surely as Tabor is among the mountains, and as Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.

18 As I live—this is the King’s declaration;Yahweh of Hosts is His name.(U)He will come like Tabor among the mountainsand like Carmel by the sea.

18 As certainly as I'm alive and living," declares the King, whose name is the LORD of the Heavenly Armies, "Indeed, one will come like Tabor among the mountains and like Carmel by the sea.

19 “O you daughter who dwells in Egypt and you who dwell with her,Prepare yourselves [with all you will need] to go into exile,For Memphis will become desolate;It will even be burned down and without inhabitant.

19 “Make your baggage ready for (AR)exile,O (AS)daughter dwelling in Egypt,For (AT)Memphis will become a desolation;It will even be burned down and (p)bereft of inhabitants.

19 O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, furnish thyself to go into captivity: for Noph shall be waste and desolate without an inhabitant.

19 Get your bags ready for exile,inhabitant of Daughter Egypt!(V)For Memphis will become a desolation,uninhabited ruins.

19 Prepare your baggage for exile, daughter living in Egypt, for Memphis will become a desolate place. It will become a ruin without inhabitant.

20 “Egypt is a very pretty heifer,But a horsefly (Babylonia) is coming [against her] out of the north!

20 “Egypt is a pretty (AU)heifer,But a (q)horsefly is coming (AV)from the north—it is coming!

20 Egypt is like a very fair heifer, but destruction cometh; it cometh out of the north.

20 Egypt is a beautiful young cow,(W)but a horsefly from the north is coming against her.(b)(X)

20 Egypt is a beautiful calf, but a horsefly from the north is surely coming.

21 “Also her mercenaries in her armyAre like fattened calves,For they too have turned back and have fled together;They did not stand [their ground],Because the day of their disaster has come upon them,The time of their punishment.

21 “Also her (AW)mercenaries in her midstAre like (r)fattened (AX)calves,For even they too have turned back and have fled away together;They did not stand their ground.For the day of their calamity has come upon them,The time of their (AY)punishment.

21 Also her hired men are in the midst of her like fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their calamity was come upon them, and the time of their visitation.

21 Even her mercenaries among herare like stall-fed calves.They too will turn back;together they will flee;they will not take their stand,for the day of their calamity is coming on them,the time of their punishment.(Y)

21 Even the mercenary troops in her ranks are like a fattened calf. They too will turn around, and will flee together. They won't stand, for the day of their disaster is coming on them, the time of their punishment.

22 “The sound [of Egypt fleeing from the enemy] is like [the rustling of] an escaping serpent,For her foes advance with a mighty armyAnd come against her like woodcutters with axes.

22 “Its sound moves along like a serpent;For they move on (s)like an armyAnd come to her as woodcutters with axes.

22 The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.

22 Egypt will hiss like a slithering snake,(c)for the enemy will come with an army;with axes they will come against herlike those who cut trees.(Z)

22 Her cry will be like that of a fleeing serpent when they come in strength. They're coming to her with axes like woodcutters.

23 “They have cut down her forest,” says the Lord;“Certainly it will no longer be found,Because they (the invaders) are more numerous than locustsAnd cannot be counted.

23 “They have cut down her (AZ)forest,” declares the Lord;“Surely it will no more be found,Even though (t)they are now more numerous than (BA)locustsAnd are without number.

23 They shall cut down her forest, saith the LORD, though it cannot be searched; because they are more than the grasshoppers, and are innumerable.

23 They will cut down her forest—this is the Lord’s declaration—though it is dense,for they are more numerous than locusts;they cannot be counted.(AA)

23 They'll cut down her forest, though it's impenetrable," declares the LORD, "for they're more numerous than locusts, and there are too many of them to count.

24 “The Daughter of Egypt has been shamed,Given over to the power of the people of the north [the Chaldeans of Babylonia].”

24 “The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,Given over to the (u)power of the (BB)people of the north.”

24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded; she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.

24 Daughter Egypt will be put to shame,handed over to a northern people.(AB)

24 The daughter of Egypt will be put to shame, she will be given into the hands of the people from the north."

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon [chief god of the sacred city] of Thebes [the capital of Upper Egypt], and Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her gods and her kings—even Pharaoh and those who put their trust in him [as a shield against Babylon].

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of (BC)Thebes, and (BD)Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her (BE)gods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who (BF)trust in him.

25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saith; Behold, I will punish the multitude of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and all them that trust in him:

25 The Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “I am about to punish Amon, god of Thebes,(AC) along with Pharaoh, Egypt, her gods, and her kings—Pharaoh and those trusting in him.

25 The LORD of the Heavenly Armies, the God of Israel says, "Look, I'm going to punish Amon of Thebes, Pharaoh, Egypt, its gods and its kings, Pharaoh, and those who trust in him.

26 I will put them into the hand of those who seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his servants. Afterward Egypt will be (g)inhabited as in the days of old,” says the Lord.

26 I shall give them over to the (v)power of those who are (BG)seeking their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his (w)officers. (BH)Afterwards, however, it will be inhabited as in the days of old,” declares the Lord.

26 And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants: and afterward it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, saith the LORD.

26 I will hand them over to those who want to take their lives(AD)—to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and his officers. But after this,(AE) it will be inhabited again as in ancient times.”This is the Lord’s declaration.

26 I'll give them to those who are seeking their lives and to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and his officers. Then afterwards, Egypt will be inhabited as in times past," declares the LORD.

Reassurance For Israel

27 “But as for you, do not fear, O My servant Jacob,Nor be dismayed, O Israel!For behold, I will save you from [your captivity in] a distant land,And your descendants from the land of their exile;And Jacob will return and be quiet and secure,And no one will make him afraid.

27 “But as for you, O Jacob My servant, (BI)do not fear,Nor be dismayed, O Israel!For, see, I am going to (BJ)save you from afar,And your descendants from the land of their captivity;And Jacob will return and be (BK)undisturbedAnd secure, with no one making him tremble.

27 But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob, and be not dismayed, O Israel: for, behold, I will save thee from afar off, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease, and none shall make him afraid.

27 But you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid,(AF)and do not be discouraged, Israel,for without fail I will save you from far awayand your descendants, from the land of their captivity!Jacob will return and have calm and quietwith no one to frighten him.

27 "As for you, my servant Jacob, don't be afraid, and Israel, don't be dismayed. For I'll deliver you from a distant place, and your descendants from the land of their captivity. Jacob will return. He will be undisturbed and secure, and no one will cause him to fear.

28 “Do not fear, O Jacob My servant,” says the Lord,“For I am with you.For I will make a full and complete end of all the nationsTo which I have driven you;Yet I will not make a full end of you.But I will discipline and correct you appropriatelyAnd by no means will I declare you guiltless or leave you unpunished.”

28 “O Jacob My servant, do not fear,” declares the Lord,“For (BL)I am with you.For I will make a full end of all the nationsWhere I have driven you,Yet I will (BM)not make a full end of you;But I will (BN)correct you properlyAnd by no means leave you unpunished.”

28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, saith the LORD: for I am with thee; for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee: but I will not make a full end of thee, but correct thee in measure; yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.

28 And you, My servant Jacob, do not be afraid—this is the Lord’s declaration—for I will be with you.(AG)I will bring destruction on all the nationswhere I have banished you,but I will not bring destruction on you.I will discipline you with justice,and I will by no means leave you unpunished.(AH)

28 "As for you, my servant Jacob, don't be afraid, and Israel, don't be dismayed," declares the LORD, "for I am with you. Indeed, I'll make an end of all the nations where I scattered you; but I won't make an end of you! I'll discipline you justly, but I'll certainly not leave you unpunished."
