When A Tree Is Chopped Down

7 For there is hope of a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch of it will not cease.

7 “For there is hope for a tree,When it is cut down, that it will sprout again,And its shoots will not (f)fail.

7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

7 There is hope for a tree:If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its shoots will not die.

7 "There is hope for the tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots won't stop growing.

8 Though the root of it grows old in the earth, and the trunk of it dies in the ground,

8 “Though its roots grow old in the groundAnd its stump dies in the dry soil,

8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

8 If its roots grow old in the groundand its stump starts to die in the soil,

8 Even if its roots have grown ancient in the earth, and its stump begins to rot in the ground,

9 yet through the scent of water it will bud, and put forth boughs like a plant.

9 At the scent of water it will flourishAnd put forth sprigs like a plant.

9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

9 the smell of water makes it thriveand produce twigs like a sapling.(F)

9 the presence of water will make it to bud so that it sprouts new branches like a young plant.

10 “But (J)man dies and lies prostrate.Man (K)expires, and where is he?

10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

10 But a man dies and fades away;he breathes his last—where is he?

10 "But when a person dies and wastes away, when a person breathes his last, where will he be?

11 [As] the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes away and dries up,

11 “As (L)water (g)evaporates from the sea,And a river becomes parched and dried up,

11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

11 As water disappears from the seaand a river becomes parched and dry,

11 As water disappears from the sea, or water evaporates from a river,

12 so man lays down and does not rise. Till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep.

12 So (M)man lies down and does not rise.Until the heavens are no longer,(h)He will not awake nor be aroused out of (i)his sleep.

12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

12 so man lies down never to rise again. They will not wake up until the heavens are no more;(G)they will not stir from their sleep.

12 so also a person lies down and does not get up; they won't awaken until the heavens are no more, nor will they arise from their sleep."

13 O that thou would hide me in Sheol, that thou would keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou would appoint for me a set time, and remember me!

13 “Oh that You would hide me in (j)Sheol,That You would conceal me (N)until Your wrath returns to You,That You would set a limit for me and remember me!

13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

13 If only You would hide me in Sheol(H)and conceal me until Your anger(I) passes. If only You would appoint a time for meand then remember me.

13 "Won't you keep me safe in the afterlife? Conceal me until your anger subsides. Set an appointment for me, then remember me.

Will We Humans Live Again?

14 If a man dies, shall he live [again]? All the days of my warfare I would wait till my release should come.

14 “If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my struggle I will waitUntil my change comes.

14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

14 When a man dies, will he come back to life?If so, I would wait(J) all the days of my struggle(K)until my relief comes.

14 If a human being dies, will he live again? I will endure the entire time of my assigned service, until I am changed.

15 Thou would call, and I would answer thee. Thou would have a desire to the work of thy hands.

15 “You will call, and I will answer You;You will long for (O)the work of Your hands.

15 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

15 You would call, and I would answer You.You would long for the work of Your hands.(L)

16 But now thou number my steps. Do thou not watch over my sin?

16 “For now You (P)number my steps,You do not (Q)observe my sin.

16 For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

16 For then You would count my steps(M)but would not take note(N) of my sin.

16 Then you'll certainly count every step I took, but you won't keep an inventory of my sin.

17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou fasten up my iniquity.

17 “My transgression is (R)sealed up in a bag,And You (k)wrap up my iniquity.

17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

17 My rebellion would be sealed up in a bag,and You would cover over my iniquity.

17 My transgressions would be sealed up in a bag; you would cover over my sins.

18 But the falling mountain comes to nothing, and the rock is removed out of its place.

18 “But the falling mountain (l)crumbles away,And the rock moves from its place;

18 And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

18 But as a mountain collapses and crumblesand a rock is dislodged from its place,

18 "Mountains fall and crumble; rocks are dislodged from their places.

19 The waters wear the stones. The overflowings of it wash away the dust of the earth. So thou destroy the hope of man.

19 Water wears away stones,Its torrents wash away the dust of the earth; So You (S)destroy man’s hope.

19 The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

19 as water wears away stonesand torrents wash away the soil from the land,so You destroy a man’s hope.(O)

19 Water wears away stones; floods wash away topsoil from the land but you destroy the hope of human beings just like that!

20 Thou prevail forever against him, and he passes. Thou change his countenance, and send him away.

20 “You forever overpower him and he (T)departs; You change his appearance and send him away.

20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

20 You completely overpower him, and he passes on;You change his appearance and send him away.

20 You overpower him once and for all, and then he departs; you change his appearance and then send him away.

21 His sons come to honor, and he does not know it, and they are brought low, but he does not perceive it of them.

21 “His sons achieve honor, but (U)he does not know it;Or they become insignificant, but he does not perceive it.

21 His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

21 If his sons receive honor, he does not know it;if they become insignificant, he is unaware of it.(P)

21 "If his children are honored, he doesn't know it; if they become insignificant, he never perceives it.

22 But his flesh upon him has pain, and his soul within him mourns.

22 “But his (m)body pains him,And he mourns only for himself.”

22 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.

22 He feels only the pain of his own bodyand mourns only for himself.

22 He feels only his own pain, and grieves only for himself."
