Job's Fourth Speech Continues

1 Lo, my eye has seen all [this]. My ear has heard and understood it.

1 (A)Behold, my eye has seen all this,My ear has heard and understood it.

1 Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it.

1 Look, my eyes have seen all this;my ears(A) have heard and understood it.

1 "Look, I've seen everything; I've listened carefully and I understand.

2 What ye know, I also know; I am not inferior to you.

2 (B)What you know I also know;I am not inferior to you.

2 What ye know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you.

2 Everything you know, I also know;I am not inferior to you.(B)

2 What you know, I know, too; I'm not inferior to you.

3 Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

3 “But (C)I would speak to (a)the Almighty,And I desire to (D)argue with God.

3 Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

3 Yet I prefer to speak to the Almightyand argue my case before God.(C)

3 But I want to talk to the Almighty; and I'm determined to argue my case before God."

4 But ye are forgers of lies. Ye are all physicians of no value.

4 “But you (E)smear with lies; You are all (F)worthless physicians.

4 But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.

4 But you coat the truth with lies;you are all worthless doctors.(D)

4 "But as for you, you whitewash with lies; all of you are worthless quacks.

5 O that ye would altogether be silent! And it would be your wisdom.

5 “O that you would (G)be completely silent,And that it would become your wisdom!

5 O that ye would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.

5 If only you would shut upand let that be your wisdom!

5 I wish you'd all just shut up. Then at least you would appear to be wise.

6 Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

6 “Please hear my argumentAnd listen to the contentions of my lips.

6 Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

6 Hear now my argument, and listen to my defense.(a)

6 "Now listen to my dispute! Pay attention to my arguments.

Your Wisdom Misrepresents God

7 Will ye speak unrighteously for God, and talk deceitfully for him?

7 “Will you (H)speak what is unjust for God,And speak what is deceitful for Him?

7 Will ye speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him?

7 Would you testify unjustly on God’s behalfor speak deceitfully for Him?

7 Why do you speak falsely on God's behalf and speak deceitfully about him?

8 Will ye show partiality to him? Will ye contend for God?

8 “Will you (I)show partiality for Him?Will you contend for God?

8 Will ye accept his person? will ye contend for God?

8 Would you show partiality(E) to Himor argue the case in His defense?

8 Will you show partiality to him? Will you plead God's case?

9 Is it good that he should search you out? Or as deceiving a man, will ye deceive him?

9 “Will it be well when He examines you?Or (J)will you deceive Him as one deceives a man?

9 Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocketh another, do ye so mock him?

9 Would it go well if He examined you?Could you deceive Him as you would deceive a man?(F)

9 Will things go well for you under his cross-examination? Can you lie to him, as you would to a human being?

10 He will surely reprove you if ye secretly show partiality.

10 “He will surely reprove youIf you secretly (K)show partiality.

10 He will surely reprove you, if ye do secretly accept persons.

10 Surely He would rebuke youif you secretly showed partiality.

10 "He will be sure to rebuke you, if you show partiality in secret.

11 Shall not his majesty make you afraid, and his dread fall upon you?

11 “Will not (L)His (b)majesty terrify you,And the dread of Him fall on you?

11 Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?

11 Would God’s majesty not terrify you?(G)Would His dread not fall on you?

11 His splendor will petrify you with terror, paralyzing you with fear, won't it?

12 Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes. Your defenses are defenses of clay.

12 “Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes,Your defenses are defenses of clay.

12 Your remembrances are like unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.

12 Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ash;(H)your defenses are made of clay.

12 Your maxims are just worthless proverbs; your defensive arguments are made of clay."

Be Quiet While I Speak

13 Be quiet. Let me alone that I may speak, and let come on me what will.

13 (M)Be silent before me so that I may speak; Then let come on me what may.

13 Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.

13 Be quiet,(b) and I will speak.Let whatever comes happen to me.

13 "Don't talk to me! It's my turn to speak; then whatever happens, happens.

14 Why should I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand?

14 “Why should I take my flesh in my teethAnd (N)put my life in my (c)hands?

14 Wherefore do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in mine hand?

14 Why do I put myself at risk(c)and take my life in my own hands?

14 Why shouldn't I bite my flesh or take my life in my hands?

15 Behold, he will kill me; I have no hope. Nevertheless I will maintain my ways before him.

15 (O)Though He slay me,I will hope in Him.Nevertheless I (P)will argue my ways (d)before Him.

15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.

15 Even if He kills me, I will hope in Him.(d)I will still defend(I) my ways before Him.

15 Even though he kills me, I'll continue to hope in him. At least I'll be able to argue my case to his face!

16 This also shall be my salvation, that a profane man shall not come before him.

16 “This also will be my (Q)salvation,For (R)a godless man may not come before His presence.

16 He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.

16 Yes, this will result in my deliverance, for no godless person(J) can appear before Him.

16 I have this as my salvation: the godless person won't be appearing before him.

Job Speaks To God

17 Hear diligently my speech, and let my declaration be in your ears.

17 “Listen carefully to my speech,And let my declaration fill your ears.

17 Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears.

17 Pay close attention to my words;let my declaration ring in your ears.

17 Pay attention to what I have to say and listen to my testimony with your own ears."

18 Behold now, I have set my case in order. I know that I am righteous.

18 “Behold now, I have (S)prepared my case;I know that (T)I will be vindicated.

18 Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified.

18 Now then, I have prepared my case;(K)I know that I am right.

18 "Look, now! I've prepared my case for court. I know that I'm going to win.

19 Who is he who will contend with me? For then I would keep silent and give up the spirit.

19 (U)Who will contend with me?For then I would be silent and (V)die.

19 Who is he that will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost.

19 Can anyone indict me?If so, I will be silent and die.

19 Who can oppose me? If they do, I'll be silent and die.

Job Argues His Case With God

20 Only do not do two things to me, then I will not hide myself from thy face:

20 “Only two things do not do to me,Then I will not hide from Your face:

20 Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from thee.

20 Only grant these two things to me, God,so that I will not have to hide from Your presence:

20 Grant me only two things as you deal with me; then I won't hide from you.

21 Withdraw thy hand far from me, and do not let thy dread make me afraid.

21 (W)Remove Your (e)hand from me,And let not the dread of You terrify me.

21 Withdraw thine hand far from me: and let not thy dread make me afraid.

21 remove Your hand from me,and do not let Your terror frighten me.(L)

21 Withdraw your hand far from me and keep me from being petrified with terror.

22 Then call thou, and I will answer, or let me speak, and answer thou me.

22 “Then call, and (X)I will answer;Or let me speak, then reply to me.

22 Then call thou, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer thou me.

22 Then call, and I will answer,(M)or I will speak, and You can respond to me.

22 Then call and I'll answer, or let me speak and then you reply to me!"

23 How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin.

23 (Y)How many are my iniquities and sins?Make known to me my (f)rebellion and my sin.

23 How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin.

23 How many iniquities(N) and sins have I committed?(e)Reveal to me my transgression and sin.

23 "How many of my iniquities and sins have you counted? Show me my transgression and sin.

24 Why do thou hide thy face, and reckon me for thine enemy?

24 “Why do You (Z)hide Your faceAnd consider me (AA)Your enemy?

24 Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?

24 Why do You hide Your faceand consider me Your enemy?(O)

24 Why do you hide your face and regard me as your enemy?

25 Will thou harass a driven leaf? And will thou pursue the dry stubble?

25 “Will You cause a (AB)driven leaf to tremble?Or will You pursue the dry (AC)chaff?

25 Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?

25 Will You frighten a wind-driven leaf? Will You chase after dry straw?

25 Are you a god who would make a leaf tremble or who would prosecute a dry straw?

26 For thou write bitter things against me, and make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth.

26 “For You write (AD)bitter things against meAnd (AE)make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth.

26 For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to possess the iniquities of my youth.

26 For You record bitter accusations against meand make me inherit the iniquities of my youth.

26 You've accused me of bitter things; you've caused me to reap the sins of my youth.

27 Thou also put my feet in the stocks, and mark all my paths. Thou set a bound to the soles of my feet.

27 “You (AF)put my feet in the stocksAnd watch all my paths; You (g)set a limit for the soles of my feet,

27 Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet.

27 You put my feet in the stocksand stand watch over all my paths, setting a limit for the soles(f) of my feet.

27 You've locked my feet in stocks; you watch all my steps; You've limited where I can walk.

28 Though I am like a rotten thing that decays, like a garment that is moth-eaten.

28 While (h)I am decaying like a (AG)rotten thing,Like a garment that is moth-eaten.

28 And he, as a rotten thing, consumeth, as a garment that is moth eaten.

28 Man wears out like something rotten,like a moth-eaten garment.(P) >

28 So I'm a man who wears out like something rotten, like a garment that has become moth-eaten."
