1 And there came a certain day when the sons of God entered in, to present themselves unto Yahweh - so the accuser also entered in their midst, to present himself unto Yahweh.
1 (A)Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord.
1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
1 One day the sons of God(A) came again to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them to present himself before the Lord.
1 Some time later, divine beings again presented themselves to the LORD, and Satan accompanied them to present himself to the LORD.
2 And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Whence comest thou? And the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from wandering about therein.
2 The Lord said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it.”
2 And the LORD said unto Satan, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
2 The Lord asked Satan, “Where have you come from?”“From roaming through the earth,” Satan answered Him, “and walking around on it.”
2 The LORD asked Satan, "Where have you come from?" In response, Satan told the LORD, "From wandering all over the earth and walking back and forth throughout it."
3 And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Hast thou applied thy heart unto my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man blameless and upright, one who revereth God, and avoideth evil; and still he is holding fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to swallow him up without cause.
3 The Lord said to Satan, “Have you (a)considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man (b)fearing God and turning away from evil. And he still (B)holds fast his integrity, although you incited Me against him to (c)ruin him without cause.”
3 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
3 Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? No one else on earth is like him, a man of perfect integrity,(B) who fears God and turns away from evil.(C) He still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him, to destroy him without just cause.”
3 The LORD asked Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on earth. The man is blameless as well as upright. He fears God and keeps away from evil. He remains firm in his integrity, even though you have been urging me to overwhelm him without cause."
4 Then the accuser answered Yahweh, and said, Skin for skin, and so, all that a man hath, will he give for his life.
4 Satan answered the Lord and said, “Skin for skin! Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.
4 And Satan answered the LORD, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life.
4 “Skin for skin!” Satan answered the Lord. “A man will give up everything he owns in exchange for his life.
4 Satan answered the LORD, "Skin for skin! The man will give up everything that he owns in exchange for his health.
5 In very deed, put forth, I pray thee thy hand, and smite unto his bone, and unto his flesh, - verily, unto thy face, will he curse thee.
5 (C)However, put forth Your hand now, and (D)touch his bone and his flesh; he will curse You to Your face.”
5 But put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face.
5 But stretch out Your hand and strike(D) his flesh and bones, and he will surely curse You to Your face.”
5 However, stretch out your hand and strike his bones and flesh, and he'll curse you to your face, won't he?"
6 And Yahweh said unto the accuser, Behold him! in thy hand, - only, his life, preserve thou!
6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.
6 “Very well,” the Lord told Satan, “he is in your power; only spare his life.”
6 Then the LORD told Satan, "Very well then, he is under your control. Just preserve his life."
7 So the accuser went forth from the presence of Yahweh, - and smote Job with a sore boil, from the sole of his foot, unto his crown.
7 Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and smote Job with (E)sore boils from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
7 So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.
7 So Satan left the Lord’s presence and infected Job with terrible boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.(E)
7 So Satan left the LORD's presence and struck Job with terrible boils from the sole of his feet to the top of his head.
9 Then said his wife unto him, Art thou still holding fast thine integrity? Curse God, and die!
9 Then his wife said to him, “Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God and die!”
9 Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.
9 His wife said to him, “Do you still retain your integrity? Curse God and die!”
9 Then his wife told him, "Do you remain firm in your integrity? Curse God and die!"
10 And he said unto her, As one of the base women speaketh, speakest thou? Blessing, shall we accept from God, and, misfortune, shall we not accept? In all this, Job sinned not with his lips.
10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. (G)Shall we indeed accept good from God and not accept adversity?” (H)In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
10 “You speak as a foolish woman speaks,” he told her. “Should we accept only good from God and not adversity?” Throughout all this Job did not sin in what he said.(b)
10 But he replied to her, "You're talking like foolish women do. Are we to accept what is good from God but not tragedy?" Throughout all of this, Job did not sin by what he said.
11 Now when the three friends of Job heard of all this misfortune which had befallen him, - they came, every man from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite, - for they had by appointment met together to come to shew sympathy with him, and to comfort him.
11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this adversity that had come upon him, they came each one from his own place, Eliphaz the (I)Temanite, Bildad the (J)Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite; and they made an appointment together to come to (K)sympathize with him and comfort him.
11 Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.
11 Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite,(G) Bildad the Shuhite,(H) and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this adversity that had happened to him, each of them came from his home. They met together to go and sympathize with him and comfort(I) him.
11 When Job's three friends heard all these tragedies that happened to him, they each traveled from their home towns to visit him. Eliphaz came from Teman, Bildad came from Shuah, and Zophar came from Naamath. They met together and went to console and comfort him.
12 And, when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept - and rent, every one his robe, and sprinkled dust upon their heads, toward the heavens.
12 When they lifted up their eyes at a distance and did not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them (L)tore his robe and they (M)threw dust over their heads toward the sky.
12 And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
12 When they looked from a distance, they could barely recognize him. They wept aloud,(J) and each man tore his robe and threw dust into the air and on his head.(K)
12 Observing him from a distance, at first they didn't even recognize him, so they raised their voices and burst into tears. They each ripped their robes, threw ashes into the air on their heads,
13 And they sat with him upon the ground, seven days and seven nights, - and none was speaking unto him a word, for they saw that, exceeding great, was the stinging pain.
13 (N)Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.
13 So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
13 Then they sat on the ground with him seven days and nights,(L) but no one spoke a word to him because they saw that his suffering(M) was very intense.
13 and sat with Job on the ground for a full week without saying a word, since they could see the great extent of his anguish.
