Elihu Rebukes Job And His Three Friends

1 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

1 Then these three men ceased answering Job, because he was (A)righteous in his own eyes.

1 So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

1 So these three men quit answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.(A)

1 These three men stopped responding to Job, because he was claiming to be righteous, in his own opinion.

2 Then the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel, the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was kindled against Job. His wrath was kindled because he justified himself rather than God.

2 But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the (B)Buzite, of the family of Ram burned; against Job his anger burned (C)because he justified himself (a)(D)before God.

2 Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

2 Then Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite(B) from the family of Ram became angry. He was angry at Job because he had justified(C) himself rather than God.

2 But then Barachel's son Elihu from Buz, one of Ram's descendants, got really angry. He was furious with Job because he had been declaring himself righteous instead of vindicating God.

3 Also his wrath was kindled against his three friends, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

3 And his anger burned against his three friends because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

3 Also against his three friends was his wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

3 He was also angry at Job’s three friends because they had failed to refute him and yet had condemned him.(a)

3 Furthermore, he was furious with his three friends because they had not answered Job, but instead had condemned him.

4 Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job, because they were elder than he.

4 Now Elihu had waited (b)to speak to Job because they were years older than he.

4 Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were elder than he.

4 Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were all older than he.

4 Elihu waited to have a word with Job, since the others were older than he,

5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, his wrath was kindled.

5 And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men his anger burned.

5 When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was kindled.

5 But when he saw that the three men could not answer Job, he became angry.

5 but when he saw that there had been no response from those three, he got even more angry.

The Reason For Elihu's Discourse

6 Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered, "I am young, and you are very old; Therefore I held back, and did not dare show you my opinion.

6 So Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite (c)spoke out and said,“I am young in years and you are (E)old; Therefore I was shy and afraid to tell you (d)what I think.

6 And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and durst not shew you mine opinion.

6 So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite replied:I am young in years, while you are old;therefore I was timid and afraidto tell(D) you what I know.

6 Barachel's son Elihu from Buz responded and said: "I'm younger than you are. Because you're older, I was terrified to tell you what I know.

7 I said, 'Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.'

7 “I (e)thought (f)(F)age should speak,And (g)increased years should teach wisdom.

7 I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.

7 I thought that age should speakand maturity should teach wisdom.

7 I thought, experience should speak; abundance of years teaches wisdom.

8 But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of Shaddai gives them understanding.

8 “But it is a spirit in man,And the (G)breath of the Almighty gives them (H)understanding.

8 But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

8 But it is a spirit in man(b)and the breath(E) of the Almightythat give him understanding.

8 However, a spirit exists in mankind, and the Almighty's breath gives him insight."

9 It is not the great who are wise, nor the aged who understand justice.

9 “The (h)abundant in years may not be wise,Nor may (I)elders understand justice.

9 Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.

9 It is not only the old who are wiseor the elderly who understand how to judge.

9 "The aged aren't always wise, nor do the elderly always understand justice.

10 Therefore I said, 'Listen to me; I also will show my opinion.'

10 “So I (i)say, ‘Listen to me,I too will tell (j)what I think.’

10 Therefore I said, Hearken to me; I also will shew mine opinion.

10 Therefore I say, “Listen to me.I too will declare what I know.”

10 Therefore I'm saying, "Listen to me!' Then I'll declare what I know.

11 "Behold, I waited for your words, and I listened for your reasoning, while you searched out what to say.

11 “Behold, I waited for your words,I listened to your reasonings,While you (k)pondered what to say.

11 Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, whilst ye searched out what to say.

11 Look, I waited for your conclusions;I listened to your insightsas you sought for words.

11 "Look! I have waited to hear your speech, so I listened to your insights while you searched for the right words to say.

12 Yes, I gave you my full attention, but there was no one who convinced Job, or who answered his words, among you.

12 “I even paid close attention to you;(l)Indeed, there was no one who refuted Job,Not one of you who answered his words.

12 Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:

12 I paid close attention to you.Yet no one proved Job wrong;not one of you refuted his arguments.

12 Indeed, I paid close attention to you all, but none of you were able to refute Job or answer his arguments convincingly.

13 Beware lest you say, 'We have found wisdom, God may refute him, not man;'

13 “Do not say,(J)We have found wisdom;God will (m)rout him, not man.’

13 Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.

13 So do not claim, “We have found wisdom;let God deal with him, not man.”

13 "So that you cannot claim, "We have found wisdom!' let God do the rebuking, not man;

14 for he has not directed his words against me; neither will I answer him with your speeches.

14 “For he has not arranged his words against me,Nor will I reply to him with your (n)arguments.

14 Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches.

14 But Job has not directed his argument to me,and I will not respond to him with your arguments.

14 let him not direct a rebuke toward me. I won't be responding to him with your arguments.

15 "They are amazed. They answer no more. They do not have a word to say.

15 “They are dismayed, they no longer answer;Words have (o)failed them.

15 They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking.

15 Job’s friends are dismayed and can no longer answer;words have left them.

15 "Job's friends won't reason with him anymore; discouraged, words escape them.

16 Shall I wait, because they do not speak, because they stand still, and answer no more?

16 “Shall I wait, because they do not speak,Because they (p)stop and no longer answer?

16 When I had waited, (for they spake not, but stood still, and answered no more;)

16 Should I continue to wait now that they are silent, now that they stand there and no longer answer?

16 Shall I continue to wait, since they're no longer talking? After all, they're only standing there; they're no longer responding.

17 I also will answer my part, and I also will show my opinion.

17 “I too will answer my share,I also will tell my opinion.

17 I said, I will answer also my part, I also will shew mine opinion.

17 I too will answer;(c)yes, I will tell what I know.

17 "I will contribute my arguments as an answer; I'll declare what I know,

18 For I am full of words. The spirit within me constrains me.

18 “For I am full of words; The spirit within me constrains me.

18 For I am full of matter, the spirit within me constraineth me.

18 For I am full of words, and my spirit(d) compels me to speak.(F)

18 because I'm filled with things to say, and my spirit within me compels me to speak.

19 Behold, my breast is as wine which has no vent; like new wineskins it is ready to burst.

19 “Behold, my belly is like unvented wine,Like new wineskins it is about to burst.

19 Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent; it is ready to burst like new bottles.

19 My heart(e) is like unvented wine;it is about to burst like new wineskins.(G)

19 My insides feel like unvented wine, like it's about to burst like a new wineskin.

20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed. I will open my lips and answer.

20 “Let me speak that I may get relief;Let me open my lips and answer.

20 I will speak, that I may be refreshed: I will open my lips and answer.

20 I must speak so that I can find relief;I must open my lips and respond.

20 "Let me speak! I need relief! Let me open my lips and respond.

21 Please do not let me respect any man's person, neither will I give flattering titles to any man.

21 “Let me now (K)be partial to no one,Nor flatter any man.

21 Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man.

21 I will be partial to no one,(H)and I will not give anyone an undeserved title.

21 I won't discriminate against anyone, and I won't flatter any person,

22 For I do not know how to give flattering titles; or else my Maker would soon take me away.

22 “For I do not know how to flatter,Else my Maker would soon take me away.

22 For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.

22 For I do not know how to give such titles;otherwise, my Maker would remove me in an instant.

22 since I don't know the first thing about how to flatter; and the one who made me would sweep me away as if I were nothing."
