Elihu Extols God's Majesty

1 At this, my heart is astonished, and moved out of his place.

1 At this also my heart trembleth, and is moved out of his place.

1 “At this also my heart trembles,And leaps from its place.

1 My heart(A) pounds at thisand leaps from my chest.(a)

1 "Now I'll conclude with this: my heart is trembling violently; it feels like it's about to leap from my body!

2 Hear then the sound of his voice, and the noise that goeth out of his mouth.

2 Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goeth out of his mouth.

2 “Listen closely to the (A)thunder of His voice,And the rumbling that goes out from His mouth.

2 Just listen to His thunderous voiceand the rumbling that comes from His mouth.

2 Listen carefully to his thundering voice; to the sound that rumbles from his mouth.

3 He governeth everything under the heaven, and his light reacheth unto the end of the world.

3 He directeth it under the whole heaven, and his lightning unto the ends of the earth.

3 “Under the whole heaven He lets it loose,And His (a)lightning to the (B)ends of the earth.

3 He lets it loose beneath the entire sky;His lightning to the ends(B) of the earth.

3 He releases his lightning throughout the sky, to the ends of the earth.

4 A roaring voice followeth him: for his glorious majesty giveth such a thunder clap, that, though a man hear it, yet may he not perceive it afterward. It giveth a horrible sound,

4 After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.

4 “After it, a voice roars; He thunders with His majestic voice,And He does not restrain (b)the lightnings when His voice is heard.

4 Then there comes a roaring sound;God thunders(C) with His majestic voice. He does not restrain the lightningwhen His rumbling voice is heard.

4 His thunder roars after it; his majestic voice will thunder; and no one can trace them once his voice has been heard.

5 when God sendeth out his voice: great things doth he, which we can not comprehend.

5 God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.

5 “God (C)thunders with His voice wondrously,Doing (D)great things which we cannot comprehend.

5 God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things that we cannot comprehend.

5 "God thunders with his wondrous voice; he does awesome works that we don't comprehend.

6 "When he commandeth the snow, it falleth upon the earth: As soon as he giveth the rain a charge, immediately the showers have their strength, and fall down.

6 For he saith to the snow, Be thou on the earth; likewise to the small rain, and to the great rain of his strength.

6 “For to (E)the snow He says, ‘Fall on the earth,’And to the (c)(F)downpour and the rain, ‘Be strong.’

6 For He says to the snow,(D) “Fall to the earth,”and the torrential rains, His mighty torrential rains,

6 For he says to the snow, "Fall to the earth.' He tells the rain, "Pour down,' then it rains profusely.

7 He sendeth fear upon every man, that they might know their own works.

7 He sealeth up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.

7 “He (G)seals the hand of every man,That (H)all men may know His work.

7 serve as His sign to all mankind,so that all men may know His work.

7 "He puts a limit to the skill of every person; to delineate all people from what they do.

8 The beasts creep into their dens, and take their rest.

8 Then the beasts go into dens, and remain in their places.

8 “Then the beast goes into its (I)lairAnd remains in its (d)den.

8 The wild animals enter their lairsand stay in their dens.(E)

8 "Then a beast enters its lair and remains in its den.

9 Out of the south cometh the tempest, and cold out of the north.

9 Out of the south cometh the whirlwind: and cold out of the north.

9 “Out of the (e)(J)south comes the storm,And out of the (f)north the cold.

9 The windstorm comes from its chamber, and the cold from the driving north winds.

9 "From the south, a whirlwind proceeds, out of the icy north winds.

10 At the breath of God, the frost cometh, and the waters are shed abroad.

10 By the breath of God frost is given: and the breadth of the waters is straitened.

10 “From the breath of God (K)ice is made,And the expanse of the waters is frozen.

10 Ice is formed by the breath of God,(F)and watery expanses are frozen.

10 From the breath of God ice is produced, and a wide body of water is frozen.

11 The clouds do their labour in getting moistness, the clouds pour down the rain.

11 Also by watering he wearieth the thick cloud: he scattereth his bright cloud:

11 “Also with moisture He (L)loads the thick cloud; He (M)disperses (N)the cloud of His (g)lightning.

11 He saturates clouds with moisture;(G)He scatters His lightning through them.

11 He also loads the clouds with moisture, scattering his lightning with the clouds.

12 He distributeth also on every side, according as it pleaseth him to deal out his works, that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them through the whole world:

12 And it is turned round about by his counsels: that they may do whatsoever he commandeth them upon the face of the world in the earth.

12 “It changes direction, turning around by His guidance,That (h)it may do whatever He (O)commands (i)itOn the (P)face of the inhabited earth.

12 They swirl about, turning round and round at His direction, accomplishing everything He commands themover the surface of the inhabited world.

12 It whirls about in circles at his direction to accomplish all that he commands throughout the surface of the entire world,

13 whether it be to punish any land, or to do good unto them, that seek him.

13 He causeth it to come, whether for correction, or for his land, or for mercy.

13 “Whether for (j)(Q)correction, or for (R)His world,Or for (S)lovingkindness, He causes it to (k)happen.

13 He causes this to happen for punishment, for His land, or for His faithful love.

13 whether for discipline on his land or to demonstrate his gracious love, he causes it to be realized."

14 "Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

14 Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

14 “Listen to this, O Job,Stand and consider the wonders of God.

14 Listen to this, Job.Stop and consider God’s wonders.

14 "Pay attention to this, Job! Stand still, and consider the wondrous attributes of God.

15 Art thou of counsel with God, when he doth these things? When he causeth the light to come forth of his clouds?

15 Dost thou know when God disposed them, and caused the light of his cloud to shine?

15 “Do you know how God establishes them,And makes the (l)lightning of His cloud to shine?

15 Do you know how God directs His cloudsor makes their lightning flash?

15 Do you know how God ordains them, and makes his lightning to flash throughout his clouds?

16 Art thou of his counsel, when he spreadeth out the clouds? Hast thou the perfect knowledge of his wonders?

16 Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him which is perfect in knowledge?

16 “Do you know about the layers of the thick clouds,The (T)wonders of one (U)perfect in knowledge,

16 Do you understand how the clouds float, those wonderful works of Him who has perfect knowledge?

16 Do you understand his wondrous work of balancing the clouds, the one whose knowledge is perfect,

17 And how thy clothes are warm, when the land is still through the South wind?

17 How thy garments are warm, when he quieteth the earth by the south wind?

17 You whose garments are hot,When the land is still because of the south wind?

17 You whose clothes get hotwhen the south wind brings calm to the land,

17 you whose garments are hot, even though the land is cooled by a south wind?

18 Hast thou helped him to spread out the heavens, which are strong and bright as a looking glass?

18 Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?

18 “Can you, with Him, (V)spread out the skies,Strong as a molten mirror?

18 can you help God spread out the skiesas hard as a cast metal mirror?

18 Can you spread out the skies like he does; can you cast them as one might a mirror?

19 Teach us what we shall say unto him, for we are unmete because of darkness.

19 Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.

19 “Teach us what we shall say to Him;We (W)cannot arrange our case because of darkness.

19 Teach us what we should say to Him;(H)we cannot prepare our case because of our darkness.

19 Tell us! What are we to say to him? Can we prepare our case to face him when our faces are in darkness?

20 Shall it be told him what I say? Should a man speak, or should he keep it back?

20 Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speak, surely he shall be swallowed up.

20 “Shall it be told Him that I would speak?(m)Or should a man say that he would be swallowed up?

20 Should He be told that I want to speak? Can a man speak when he is confused?

20 Has it been relayed to God that I want to talk? Can a person speak when he is confused?"

21 "For every man seeth not the light, that he keepeth clear in the clouds, which he cleanseth when he maketh the wind to blow.

21 And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.

21 “Now (n)men do not see the light which is bright in the skies; But the wind has passed and cleared them.

21 Now men cannot even look at the sunwhen it is in the skies, after a wind has swept through and cleared them away.

21 "So then, the sun is too bright to gaze at, is it not? The sky is swept clean by the wind that blows, is it not?

22 Gold is brought out of the North, but the praise and honour of God's fear cometh from God himself.

22 Fair weather cometh out of the north: with God is terrible majesty.

22 “Out of the north comes golden splendor;Around God is awesome majesty.

22 Yet out of the north He comes, shrouded in a golden glow;awesome(I) majesty surrounds Him.

22 From the north he brings gold; around God is awesome splendor.

23 It is not we that can find out the Almighty: for in power, equity, and righteousness, he is higher than can be expressed.

23 Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.

23 “The Almighty—(X)we cannot find Him;He is (Y)exalted in powerAnd (Z)He will not do violence (AA)to justice and abundant righteousness.

23 The Almighty—we cannot reach Him—He is exalted in power! He will not oppress justice and abundant righteousness,

23 We cannot find the Almighty he is majestic in power and justice, and overflowing with righteousness; he never oppresses.

24 Seeing then that everybody feareth him, why should not all wise men also stand in fear of him?"

24 Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.

24 “Therefore men (AB)fear Him;He does not (AC)regard any who are wise of heart.”

24 Therefore, men fear Him.He does not look favorably on any who are wise(J) in heart.

24 Therefore humanity fears him, which none of the wise can quite comprehend."
