Elihu Extols God's Greatness

1 Elihu proceeded forth in his talking, and said,

1 Then Elihu continued and said,

1 Elihu also proceeded, and said,

1 Then Elihu continued, saying:

1 Elihu responded again and said:

2 "Hold thee still a little, and I shall show thee what I have yet to speak on God's behalf.

2 “Wait for me a little, and I will show youThat there (a)is yet more to be said in God’s behalf.

2 Suffer me a little, and I will shew thee that I have yet to speak on God's behalf.

2 Be patient with me a little longer, and I will inform you,for there is still more to be said on God’s behalf.

2 "Be patient with me a moment longer, and I'll show you that there's more to say on God's behalf.

3 I will open unto thee yet more of mine understanding, and prove my maker righteous.

3 “I will fetch my knowledge from afar,And I will ascribe (A)righteousness to my Maker.

3 I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.

3 I will get my knowledge from a distant placeand ascribe justice to my Maker.

3 I'll take what I know to its logical conclusion and ascribe righteousness to my Creator,

4 True are my words, and no lie: and the knowledge wherewithal I argue against thee, is perfect.

4 “For truly (B)my words are not false; One who is (C)perfect in knowledge is with you.

4 For truly my words shall not be false: he that is perfect in knowledge is with thee.

4 For my arguments are without flaw;(a)one who has perfect knowledge is with you.

4 because what I have to say isn't deceptive, and the one who has perfect knowledge is with you."

God's Justice Is Beyond Human Understanding

5 "Behold, God casteth not away the mighty, for he himself is mighty in power and wisdom.

5 “Behold, God is mighty but does not (D)despise any;He is (E)mighty in strength of understanding.

5 Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.

5 Yes, God is mighty, but He despises no one;He understands all things.(b)(A)

5 "Indeed God is mighty and he doesn't show disrespect; he is mighty and strong of heart.

6 As for the ungodly, he preserveth them not, but helpeth the poor to their right.

6 “He does not (F)keep the wicked alive,But gives justice to (G)the afflicted.

6 He preserveth not the life of the wicked: but giveth right to the poor.

6 He does not keep the wicked alive,(B)but He gives justice to the afflicted.

6 He doesn't let the wicked live; he grants justice to the afflicted.

7 He turneth not his eyes away from the righteous; he setteth up kings in their throne, and confirmeth them, so that they alway sit therein.

7 “He does not (H)withdraw His eyes from the righteous; But (I)with kings on the throneHe has seated them forever, and they are exalted.

7 He withdraweth not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings are they on the throne; yea, he doth establish them for ever, and they are exalted.

7 He does not remove His gaze from the righteous, but He seats them forever with enthroned kings, and they are exalted.

7 He won't stop looking at righteous people; he seats them on thrones with kings forever, and they are exalted.

8 But if they be laid in prison and chains, or bound with the bonds of poverty:

8 “And if they are bound in fetters,And are caught in the cords of (J)affliction,

8 And if they be bound in fetters, and be holden in cords of affliction;

8 If people are bound with chainsand trapped by the cords of affliction,

8 "If they're bound in chains, caught in ropes of affliction,

9 then sheweth he them their works and deeds and the sins wherewith they have used cruel violence.

9 Then He declares to them their workAnd their transgressions, that they have (K)magnified themselves.

9 Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.

9 God tells them what they have doneand how arrogantly they have transgressed.

9 he'll reveal their actions to them, when their transgressions have become excessive.

10 He with punishing and nurturing of them, roundeth them in the ears, warneth them to leave off from their wickedness, and to amend.

10 (L)He opens their ear to instruction,And (M)commands that they return from evil.

10 He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.

10 He opens their ears(C) to correctionand insists they repent from iniquity.

10 He opens their ears and instructs them, commanding them to repent from evil.

11 If they now will take heed and be obedient, they shall wear out their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasure and joy.

11 “If they hear and serve Him,They will (N)end their days in prosperityAnd their years in (O)pleasures.

11 If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures.

11 If they serve Him obediently, they will end their days in prosperityand their years in happiness.(D)

11 If they listen and serve him, they'll finish their lives in prosperity and their years will be pleasant.

12 But if they will not obey, they shall go through the sword, and perish before they be aware.

12 “But if they do not hear, they shall (b)perish (P)by the swordAnd they will (Q)die without knowledge.

12 But if they obey not, they shall perish by the sword, and they shall die without knowledge.

12 But if they do not obey, they will cross the river of death(c)and die without knowledge.(E)

12 "But if they won't listen, they'll perish by the sword and die in their ignorance.

13 As for such as be fained hypocrites, they heap up wrath for themselves: for they call not upon him, though they be his prisoners.

13 “But the godless in heart lay up anger; They do not cry for help when He binds them.

13 But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he bindeth them.

13 Those who have a godless heart harbor anger;even when God binds them, they do not cry for help.

13 The godless at heart cherish anger; they won't cry out for help when God afflicts them.

14 Thus their soul perisheth in foolishness, and their life shall be condemned among the fornicators.

14 (c)They die in youth,And their life perishes among the (R)cult prostitutes.

14 They die in youth, and their life is among the unclean.

14 They die in their youth;their life ends among male cult prostitutes.(F)

14 They die in their youth; and their life will end among temple prostitutes.

15 "The poor delivereth he out of his affliction, and comforteth such as be in necessity and trouble.

15 “He delivers the afflicted in (d)their (S)affliction,And (T)opens their ear (e)in time of oppression.

15 He delivereth the poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression.

15 God rescues the afflicted by their affliction; He instructs them by their torment.

15 He'll deliver the afflicted through their afflictions and open their ears when they are oppressed."

16 Even so shall he keep thee - if thou wilt be content - from the bottomless pit that is beneath: and if thou wilt hold the quiet, he shall fill thy table with plenteousness.

16 “Then indeed, He (U)enticed you from the mouth of distress,Instead of it, a broad place with no constraint; And that which was set on your table was full of (f)fatness.

16 Even so would he have removed thee out of the strait into a broad place, where there is no straitness; and that which should be set on thy table should be full of fatness.

16 Indeed, He lured you from the jaws(d) of distressto a spacious and unconfined place.Your table was spread with choice food.

16 "Indeed, he drew you away from the brink of distress to a spacious place without constraints, filling your festive table with bountiful food.

17 Nevertheless, thou hast condemned the judgment of the ungodly; yea, even such a judgment and sentence shalt thou suffer.

17 “But you were full of (V)judgment on the wicked;Judgment and justice take hold of you.

17 But thou hast fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on thee.

17 Yet now you are obsessed with the judgment due the wicked;judgment and justice have seized you.

17 But now you are occupied with the case of the wicked; but justice and judgment will be served.

18 For then shall not thy cause be stilled with cruelty, nor pacified with many gifts.

18 “Beware that (W)wrath does not entice you to scoffing; And do not let the greatness of the (X)ransom turn you aside.

18 Because there is wrath, beware lest he take thee away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee.

18 Be careful that no one lures you with riches;(e)do not let a large ransom(f) lead you astray.(G)

18 So that no one entices you with riches, don't let a large ransom turn you astray.

19 Hath God ordained then, that the glorious life of thee, and all such mighty men should not be put down?

19 “Will your (g)riches keep you from distress,Or all the forces of your strength?

19 Will he esteem thy riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.

19 Can your wealth(g) or all your physical exertionkeep you from distress?(H)

19 "Will your wealth sustain you when you're in distress, despite your most powerful efforts?

20 Prolong not thou the time, till there come a night for thee, to set other people in thy stead.

20 “Do not long for (Y)the night,When people (h)vanish in their place.

20 Desire not the night, when people are cut off in their place.

20 Do not long for the nightwhen nations will disappear from their places.

20 Don't long for night, when people vanish in their place.

21 But beware that thou turn not aside to wickedness and sin, which hitherto thou hast chosen more than meekness.

21 “Be careful, do (Z)not turn to evil,For you have preferred this to (AA)affliction.

21 Take heed, regard not iniquity: for this hast thou chosen rather than affliction.

21 Be careful that you do not turn to iniquity, for that is why you have been tested by(h) affliction.

21 Be careful! Don't turn to evil, because of this you will be tried by more than affliction.

22 Behold, God is of a mighty high power: Where is there such a guide and lawgiver as he?

22 “Behold, God is exalted in His power;Who is a (AB)teacher like Him?

22 Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like him?

22 Look, God shows Himself exalted by His power.Who is a teacher like Him?

22 "Indeed, God is exalted in his power. Who is like him as a teacher?

23 Who will reprove him of his way? Who will say unto him, 'Thou hast done wrong?'

23 “Who has appointed Him His way,And who has said, ‘(AC)You have done wrong’?

23 Who hath enjoined him his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity?

23 Who has appointed His way for Him,and who has declared, “You have done wrong”?(I)

23 Who ordained his path for him, and who has asked him, "You are wrong, aren't you?'

24 "O consider how great and excellent his works be, whom all men love and praise:

24 “Remember that you should (AD)exalt His work,Of which men have (AE)sung.

24 Remember that thou magnify his work, which men behold.

24 Remember that you should praise His work, which people have sung about.(J)

24 Remember to magnify his awesome activities, about which mortal man has sung.

25 yea, wonder at him, and yet they see him but afar off.

25 “All men have seen it;Man beholds from afar.

25 Every man may see it; man may behold it afar off.

25 All mankind has seen it;people have looked at it from a distance.(K)

25 All of mankind sees him; human beings observe him from afar off."

26 Behold, so great is God, that he passeth our knowledge; neither are we able to come to the experience of his years.

26 “Behold, God is (AF)exalted, and (AG)we do not know Him;The (AH)number of His years is unsearchable.

26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.

26 Yes, God is exalted beyond our knowledge;(L)the number of His years cannot be counted.(M)

26 "God is truly awesome, beyond what we know; the number of his years is unknowable.

27 He turneth the water to small drops, he driveth his clouds

27 “For (AI)He draws up the drops of water,They distill rain from (i)the (j)mist,

27 For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof:

27 For He makes waterdrops evaporate;(i)they distill the rain into its(j) mist,(N)

27 He draws up drops of water, distilling it to rain and mist.

28 together for to rain, so that they pour down and drop upon men.

28 Which the clouds pour down,They drip upon man abundantly.

28 Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly.

28 which the clouds pour outand shower abundantly on mankind.

28 When the clouds pour down; they drop their rain on all of humanity.

29 He can spread out the clouds - a covering of his tabernacle -

29 “Can anyone understand the (AJ)spreading of the clouds,The (AK)thundering of His (k)pavilion?

29 Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?

29 Can anyone understand how the clouds spread outor how the thunder roars from God’s pavilion?(O)

29 "Furthermore, can anyone understand cloud patterns, or the thundering in his pavilion?

30 and cause his light to shine upon them, and to cover the bottom of the sea.

30 “Behold, He spreads His (l)lightning about Him,And He covers the depths of the sea.

30 Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea.

30 See how He spreads His lightning(P) around Himand covers the depths of the sea.

30 He scatters his lightning above it, and covers the bottom of the sea.

31 By these things governeth he his people, and giveth them abundance of meat.

31 “For by these He (AL)judges peoples; He (AM)gives food in abundance.

31 For by them judgeth he the people; he giveth meat in abundance.

31 For He judges the nations with these; He gives food in abundance.(Q)

31 He uses them to judge some people and give food to many.

32 In the turning of a hand he hideth the light, and at his commandment it cometh again.

32 “He covers His hands with the (m)lightning,And (AN)commands it to strike the mark.

32 With clouds he covereth the light; and commandeth it not to shine by the cloud that cometh betwixt.

32 He covers His hands with lightningand commands it to hit its mark.

32 His hands are covered with lightning that he commands to strike his designated target.

33 The rising up thereof showeth he to his friends and to the cattle.

33 “Its (AO)noise declares (n)His presence; The cattle also, concerning what is coming up.

33 The noise thereof sheweth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.

33 The(k) thunder declares His presence;(l)the cattle also, the approaching storm. >

33 His thunder declares his presence; and tells the animals what is coming."
