1 (a)Can you pull in Leviathan(A) with a hook(B)or tie his tongue down with a rope?

1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?

8 Lay a(d) hand on him.You will remember the battleand never repeat it!

8 Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more.

8 “Lay your hand on him;Remember the battle; (f)you will not do it again!

8 Lay your hand on him, and you'll remember the struggle. You'll never do that again!

8 “Lay your hand on him;Remember the battle [with him]; you will not do such [an ill-advised thing] again!

9 (e)Any hope of capturing him proves false.Does a person not collapse at the very sight of him?

9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain: shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him?

9 (g)Behold, (h)your expectation is false;Will (i)you be laid low even at the sight of him?

9 "Look! Anyone's hope to capture him will prove itself false; anyone would be terrified just by looking at him.

9 (c)Behold, his [assailant’s] hope and expectation [of defeating Leviathan] is false;Will not one be overwhelmed even at the sight of him?

10 No one is ferocious enough to rouse Leviathan;(E)who then can stand against Me?

10 None is so fierce that dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?

10 “No one is so fierce that he dares to (C)arouse him;Who then is he that can stand before Me?

10 No one is fierce enough to dare to arouse him. "Who, then, can stand in my presence and face me?

10 “No one is so fierce [and foolhardy] that he dares to stir up Leviathan;Who then is he who can stand before Me [or dares to contend with Me, the beast’s creator]?

11 Who confronted Me, that I should repay him?Everything under heaven belongs to Me.(F)

11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.

11 “Who has (j)(D)given to Me that I should repay him?Whatever is (E)under the whole heaven is Mine.

11 Who can take me to court and be reconciled to me? All of heaven is mine.

11 “Who has first given to Me that I should repay him?Whatever is under the whole heaven is Mine. [Who can have a claim against Me who made the unmastered beast?](A)

12 I cannot be silent about his limbs,his power, and his graceful proportions.

12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.

12 “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs,Or his mighty strength, or his (k)orderly frame.

12 "I won't be silent concerning his limbs, his mighty strength, and orderly frame.

12 “I will not keep silence concerning his limbs,Nor his mighty strength, nor his orderly frame.

13 Who can strip off his outer covering?Who can penetrate his double layer of armor?(f)(G)

13 Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle?

13 Who can strip off his outer armor? Who can approach him with a bridle?

13 “Who can penetrate or strip off his outer armor?Who can come to his jaws with a double bridle?

14 Who can open his jaws,(g)surrounded by those terrifying teeth?

14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.

14 “Who can open the doors of his face?Around his teeth there is terror.

14 Who dares to open his mouth, since it is ringed with his terrible teeth!

14 “Who can open the doors (jaws) of his face?Around his [open jaws and] teeth there is terror.

15 His pride is in his rows of scales,closely sealed together.

15 His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal.

15 “His (n)strong scales are his pride,Shut up as with a tight seal.

15 His protective scales are his pride, they lie sealed tightly together.

15 “His strong scales are his pride,Bound together as with a tight seal.

16 One scale is so close to another(h)that no air can pass between them.

16 One is so near to another, that no air can come between them.

16 “One is so near to anotherThat no air can come between them.

16 Each one is so close to the other that not even air comes in between them.

16 “One is so near to anotherThat no air can come between them.

17 They are joined to one another,so closely connected(i) they cannot be separated.

17 They are joined one to another, they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.

17 “They are joined one to another;They clasp each other and cannot be separated.

17 Each is attached to the other, grasping each other so they cannot be separated.

When This Monster Sneezes

18 His snorting(j) flashes with light,while his eyes are like the rays(k) of dawn.

18 By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning.

18 “His sneezes flash forth light,And his eyes are like the (F)eyelids of the morning.

18 "His snorting releases flashes of light; his eyes are like the rays of the dawn.

18 “His sneezes flash forth light,And his eyes are like the [reddish] eyelids of the dawn.

19 Flaming torches shoot from his mouth;fiery sparks fly out!

19 Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.

19 “Out of his mouth go burning torches;Sparks of fire leap forth.

19 Flames blaze from his mouth; streams of sparking fire fly out.

19 “Out of his mouth go burning torches,And sparks of fire leap out.

20 Smoke billows from his nostrils(H)as from a boiling pot or burning reeds.

20 Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron.

20 “Out of his nostrils smoke goes forthAs from a boiling pot and burning rushes.

20 Smoke billows from his nostrils; like a boiling pot or burning reeds.

20 “Out of his nostrils smoke goes forthAs from a boiling pot and [as from] burning rushes.

21 His breath sets coals ablaze,and flames pour out of his mouth.

21 His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth.

21 “His breath kindles coals,And a flame goes forth from his mouth.

21 His breath can ignite coal; and flames proceed from his mouth.

21 “His breath kindles coals,And a flame goes forth from his mouth.

22 Strength resides in his neck,and dismay dances before him.

22 In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him.

22 "His neck is so powerful that all who meet him are terrified.

22 “In Leviathan’s neck resides strength,And dismay and terror dance before him.

23 The folds of his flesh are joined together,solid as metal(l) and immovable.

23 There is no flaw in his body's armor; it is firmly fixed on him and unbreachable.

25 When Leviathan rises, the mighty(m) are terrified;they withdraw because of his thrashing.

25 When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid: by reason of breakings they purify themselves.

25 “When he raises himself up, the (o)mighty fear;Because of the crashing they are bewildered.

25 When he rears up, the mighty are terrified; they are bewildered as he thrashes about.

25 “When he raises himself up, the mighty are afraid;Because of the crashing they are bewildered.

26 The sword that reaches him will have no effect,nor will a spear, dart, or arrow.

26 The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold: the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon.

26 “The sword that reaches him cannot avail,Nor the spear, the dart or the javelin.

26 "Thrusting at him with a sword won't be effective, nor will spears, darts, or javelins.

27 He regards iron as straw,and bronze as rotten wood.

27 He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood.

27 “He considers iron as straw,Bronze as rotten wood.

28 No arrow can make him flee;slingstones become like stubble to him.

28 The arrow cannot make him flee: slingstones are turned with him into stubble.

28 “The (p)arrow cannot make him flee;Slingstones are turned into stubble for him.

28 Arrows won't make him flee; stones from a sling are only pebbles to him.

28 “The arrow cannot make him flee;Slingstones are treated as stubble by him.

29 A club is regarded as stubble,and he laughs(I) at the sound of a javelin.

29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear.

29 “Clubs are regarded as stubble;He laughs at the rattling of the javelin.

29 Clubs are like twigs; he laughs at the whoosh of the javelin.

29 “Clubs [also] are regarded as stubble;He laughs at the rushing and the rattling of the javelin.

30 His undersides are jagged potsherds,spreading the mud like a threshing sledge.(J)

30 Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire.

30 “His underparts are like sharp potsherds;He (q)spreads out like a threshing sledge on the mire.

30 "Beneath him he is armored as with sharp potsherds; he tears through muddy ground like a threshing sledge through grain.

30 “His underparts are like sharp pieces of broken pottery;He moves across and spreads out [grooves] like a threshing sledge on the mire (muddy river banks).

31 He makes the depths seethe like a cauldron;he makes the sea like an ointment jar.

31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.

31 “He makes the depths boil like a pot;He makes the sea like a jar of ointment.

31 He causes the deep to boil like water in a pot, and churns the sea like one stirs ointment.

31 “He makes the deep water boil like a pot;He makes the sea like a [foaming] pot of ointment.

32 He leaves a shining wake behind him;(n)one would think the deep had gray hair!

32 He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary.

32 “Behind him he makes a wake to shine;One would think the deep to be gray-haired.

32 The sea is luminescent behind him; his wake turns the sea white, like those with gray hair.

32 “Behind him he makes a shining wake;One would think the deep to be gray-haired [with foam].

33 He has no equal on earth—a creature devoid of fear!

33 Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.

33 (G)Nothing on (r)earth is like him,One made without fear.

33 "There's nothing like him on earth; he was created without the ability to fear.

33 “Upon earth there is nothing like him—no equal exists,A creature made without fear.

34 He surveys everything that is haughty;he is king over all the proud beasts.(o)

34 He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.

34 (s)He looks on everything that is high;He is king over all the (H)sons of pride.”

34 He looks down on everything that is high; he rules over every kind of pride."

34 “He looks on everything that is high [without terror];He is monarch over all the sons of pride. [And now, Job, (d)who are you who does not dare to disturb the beast, yet who dares resist Me, the beast’s creator? Everything under the heavens is Mine; therefore, who can have a claim against God?]”
