1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

1 (A)In the beginning was (B)the Word, and the Word was (C)with God, and (D)the Word was God.

1 In the beginning(A) was the Word,(a)(B)and the Word was with God,and the Word was God.(C)

1 In the beginning [before all time] was the Word ((a)Christ), and the Word was with God, and (b)the Word was God Himself.(A)

2 He existed in the beginning with God.

2 (a)He was in the beginning with God.

2 He was with God in the beginning.(D)

2 He was [continually existing] in the beginning [co-eternally] with God.

3 Through him all things were made, and apart from him nothing was made that has been made.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

3 (E)All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.

3 All things were created(E) through Him,(F)and apart from Him not one thing was createdthat has been created.

3 All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him not even one thing was made that has come into being.

4 In him was life, and that life brought light to humanity.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

4 (F)In Him was life, and the life was (G)the Light of men.

4 Life was in Him,(b)(G)and that life was the light(H) of men.

4 In Him was life [and the power to bestow life], and the life was the Light of men.

5 And the light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness has never put it out.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

5 (H)The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not (b)comprehend it.

5 That light shines(I) in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome(c) it.(J)

5 The Light shines on in the (c)darkness, and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it [and is unreceptive to it].(B)

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

6 There (c)came a man sent from God, whose name was (I)John.

6 There was a man named John(K)who was sent from God.

6 There came a man commissioned and sent from God, whose name was (d)John.(C)

7 He came as a witness to testify about the light, so that all might believe because of him.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

7 (d)He came (e)(J)as a witness, to testify about the Light, (K)so that all might believe through him.

7 He came as a witnessto testify about the light,so that all might believe through him.(d)

7 This man came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe [in Christ, the Light] through him.

8 John was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

8 (f)(L)He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.

8 He was not the light, but he came to testify(L) about the light.

8 John was not the Light, but came to testify about the Light.

9 This was the true light that enlightens every person by his coming into the world.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

9 There was (M)the true Light (g)which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.

9 The true light,(M) who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.(e)(N)

9 There it was—the true Light [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] which, coming into the world, enlightens everyone.(D)

10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him. Yet the world did not recognize him.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

10 He was in the world, and (N)the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him.

10 He was in the world, and the world was created(O) through Him,yet the world did not recognize Him.

10 He (Christ) was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.

11 He came to his own creation, yet his own people did not receive him.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

11 He came to His (h)own, and those who were His own did not receive Him.

11 He came to His own,(f)and His own people(g) did not receive Him.

11 He came to that which was His own [that which belonged to Him—His world, His creation, His possession], and those who were His own [people—the Jewish nation] did not receive and welcome Him.

12 However, to all who received him, those believing in his name, he gave authority to become God's children,

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become (O)children of God, even (P)to those who believe in His name,

12 But to all who did receive(P) Him,(Q)He gave them the right(R) to be(h) children(S) of God,(T)to those who believe(U) in His name,(V)

12 But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the right [the authority, the privilege] to become children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name—(E)

13 who were born, not merely in a genetic sense, nor from lust, nor from man's desire, but from the will of God.

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

13 (Q)who were (i)born, not of (j)blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

13 who were born,(W)not of blood,(i)or of the will(X) of the flesh,(Y)or of the will of man,(j)but of God.(Z)

13 who were born, not of blood [natural conception], nor of the will of the flesh [physical impulse], nor of the will of man [that of a natural father], but of God [that is, a divine and supernatural birth—they are born of God—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified].

14 The Word became flesh and lived among us. We gazed on his glory, the kind of glory that belongs to the Father's unique Son, who is full of grace and truth.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

14 And (R)the Word (S)became flesh, and (k)(T)dwelt among us, and (U)we saw His glory, glory as of (l)the only begotten from the Father, full of (V)grace and (W)truth.

14 The Word(AA) became flesh(k)(AB)and took up residence(l) among us.We observed His glory,(AC)the glory as the One and Only(AD) Son(m) from the Father, full of grace and truth.

14 And the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we [actually] saw His glory, glory as belongs to the [One and] only begotten Son of the Father, [the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is] full of grace and truth (absolutely free of deception).(F)

15 John told the truth about him when he cried out, "This is the person about whom I said, "The one who comes after me ranks higher than me, because he existed before me.'"

15 John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

15 John *(X)testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘(Y)He who comes after me (m)has a higher rank than I, (Z)for He existed before me.’”

15 (John testified concerning Him and exclaimed,“This was the One of whom I said,‘The One coming after me(AE) has surpassed me,(AF)because He existed before me.’”)(AG)

15 John testified [repeatedly] about Him and (e)has cried out [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me (f)has a higher rank than I and has priority over me, for He existed before me.’”

16 We have all received one gracious gift after another from his abundance,

16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

16 For of His (AA)fullness (n)we have all received, and (o)grace upon grace.

16 Indeed, we have all received grace(AH) after gracefrom His fullness,

16 For out of His fullness [the superabundance of His grace and truth] we have all received grace upon grace [spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing, favor upon favor, and gift heaped upon gift].

17 because while the Law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus the Messiah.

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

17 For (AB)the Law was given through Moses; (AC)grace and (AD)truth (p)were realized through Jesus Christ.

17 for the law was given through Moses,(AI)grace and truth(AJ) came through Jesus Christ.

17 For the Law was given through Moses, but grace [the unearned, undeserved favor of God] and truth came through Jesus Christ.(G)

18 No one has ever seen God. The unique God, who is close to the Father's side, has revealed him.

18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

18 (AE)No one has seen God at any time; (AF)the only begotten God who is (AG)in the bosom of the Father, (AH)He has explained Him.

18 No one has ever seen God.(n)The One and Only(AK) Son(o)the One who is at the Father’s(AL) side(p)He has revealed Him.(AM)

18 No one has seen God [His essence, His divine nature] at any time; the [One and] only begotten God [that is, the unique Son] who is in the intimate presence of the Father, He has explained Him [and interpreted and revealed the awesome wonder of the Father].(H)

John The Baptist Testifies To Jesus

19 This was John's testimony when the Jewish leaders sent priests and descendants of Levi to him from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"

19 And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

19 This is (AI)the testimony of John, when (AJ)the Jews sent to him priests and Levites (AK)from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

19 This is John’s testimony when the Jews from Jerusalem(AN) sent priests(AO) and Levites(AP) to ask him, “Who are you?”

19 This is the testimony of John [the Baptist] when the Jews sent priests and Levites to him from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?”

20 He spoke openly and, remaining true to himself, admitted, "I am not the Messiah."

20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

20 And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “(AL)I am not (q)the Christ.”

20 He did not refuse to answer, but he declared: “I am not the Messiah.”(AQ)

20 And he confessed [truthfully] and did not deny [that he was only a man], but acknowledged, “I am not the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed)!”

21 So they asked him, "Well then, are you Elijah?" John said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" He answered, "No."

21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

21 They asked him, “What then? Are you (AM)Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you (AN)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

21 “What then?” they asked him. “Are you Elijah?”(AR)“I am not,” he said.“Are you the Prophet?”(q)(AS)“No,” he answered.

21 They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the [promised] Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”(I)

22 "Who are you?" they asked him. "We must give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"

22 Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

22 Then they said to him, “Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?”

22 “Who are you, then?” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself?”

22 Then they said to him, “Who are you? Tell us, so that we may give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”

23 He replied, "I am ""a voice crying out in the wilderness, "Prepare the Lord's highway,"' as the prophet Isaiah said."

23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

23 He said, “I am (AO)a voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

23 He said, “I am a voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord(AT)(r)—just as Isaiah(AU) the prophet said.”

23 He said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.”(J)

24 Now those men had been sent from the Pharisees.

24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.(AV)

24 Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.

25 They asked him, "Why, then, are you baptizing if you are not the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?"

25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

25 They asked him, and said to him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the (r)Christ, nor Elijah, nor (AP)the Prophet?”

25 So they asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you aren’t the Messiah, or Elijah, or the Prophet?”

25 They asked him, “Why then are you baptizing, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

26 John answered them, "I am baptizing with water, but among you stands a man whom you do not know,

26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

26 John answered them saying, “(AQ)I baptize (s)in water, but among you stands One whom you do not know.

26 “I baptize with(s) water,”(AW) John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don’t know Him.

26 John answered them, “I baptize [only] (g)in water, but among you there stands One whom you do not recognize and of whom you know nothing.(K)

27 the one who is coming after me, whose sandal straps I am not worthy to untie."

27 He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

27 It is (AR)He who comes after me, the (AS)thong of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”

27 He is the One coming after me,(t)(AX) whose sandal strap I’m not worthy to untie.”

27 It is He [the preeminent One] who comes after me, the (h)strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie [even as His slave].”

28 This happened in Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

28 These things took place in Bethany (AT)beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

28 All this happened in Bethany(u) across the Jordan,(v)(AY) where John was baptizing.

28 These things occurred in Bethany across the Jordan [at the Jordan River crossing], where John was baptizing.

The Lamb Of God

29 The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

29 The next day he *saw Jesus coming to him and *said, “Behold, (AU)the Lamb of God who (AV)takes away the sin of the world!

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God,(AZ) who takes away the sin(BA) of the world!

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God (i)who takes away the sin of the world!(L)

30 This is the one about whom I said, "After me comes a man who ranks above me, because he existed before me.'

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

30 This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘(AW)After me comes a Man who (t)has a higher rank than I, (AX)for He existed before me.’

30 This is the One I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who has surpassed me, because He existed before me.’

30 This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I and has priority over me, for He existed before me.’

31 I didn't recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel."

31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

31 I did not recognize (u)Him, but so that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing (v)in water.”

31 I didn’t know Him,(BB) but I came baptizing with(w) water so He might be revealed(BC) to Israel.”

31 (j)I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah]; but I came baptizing (k)in water so that He would be [publicly] revealed to Israel.”

32 John also testified, "I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

32 John (AY)testified saying, “(AZ)I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.

32 And John testified, “I watched the Spirit(BD) descending from heaven like a dove, and He rested on Him.(BE)

32 John gave [further] evidence [testifying officially for the record, with validity and relevance], saying, “I have seen the (l)Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.(M)

33 I didn't recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, "The person on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

33 I did not recognize (w)Him, but He who sent me to baptize (x)in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, (BA)this is the One who baptizes (y)in the Holy Spirit.’

33 I didn’t know Him, but He(x) who sent me to baptize with(y) water told me, ‘The One you see the Spirit descending and resting on—He is the One who baptizes with(z) the Holy Spirit.’(BF)

33 I did not recognize Him [as the Messiah], but He who sent me to baptize (m)in water said to me, ‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this One is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

34 I have seen this and have testified that this is the Son of God."

34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

34 I myself have seen, and have testified that this is (BB)the Son of God.”

34 I have seen and testified that He is the Son of God!”(aa)(BG)

34 I myself have [actually] seen [that happen], and my testimony is that this is the Son of God!”

Two Of John's Disciples Follow Jesus

35 The next day, John was standing there again with two of his disciples.

35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

35 Again (BC)the next day John was standing (z)with two of his disciples,

36 As he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"

36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, (BD)the Lamb of God!”

36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!”

37 The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.

37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they (n)followed Jesus.

38 But when Jesus turned around and saw them following, he asked them, "What are you looking for?" They asked him, "Rabbi," (which is translated "Teacher"), "where are you staying?"

38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “(BE)Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?”

38 When Jesus turned and noticed them following Him, He asked them, “What are you looking for?”They said to Him, “Rabbi”(BH) (which means “Teacher”), “where are You staying?”

38 And Jesus turned and saw them following Him, and asked them, “What do you want?” They answered Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?”

39 He told them, "Come and see!" So they went and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon.

39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

39 He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the (aa)tenth hour.

39 “Come and you’ll see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about 10 in the morning.(ab)

49 Nathanael answered, “Rabbi (Teacher), You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.”

50 Jesus told him, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than that."

50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

50 Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.”

50 Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe only because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You(ag) will see greater things than this.”

50 Jesus replied, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe [in Me]? You will see greater things than this.”

51 Then he told him, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, you will see heaven standing open and the angels of God going up and coming down to the Son of Man."

51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.

51 And He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see (CD)the heavens opened and (CE)the angels of God ascending and descending on (CF)the Son of Man.”

51 Then He said, “I assure you: You(ah) will see heaven opened and the angels of God(BX) ascending and descending(BY) on the Son of Man.”(BZ)

51 Then He said to him, “I assure you and most solemnly say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man [the bridge between heaven and earth].”(N)
